View Full Version : Proxomitron Slows Web Browsing

I've been using Proxomitron for what I believe to be 6 months now. I almost never have turned it off since I figured out how to configure it in a way that allows flexibility. Still, I notice there is a huge difference between having it on and not having it on as relative to my web browsing speed. I decided to turn it off this morning, after I wasn't able to get into a site. After leaving the site, I forgot to turn Proxo. back on. Immediately, I knew something was different. There was almost no lag in the loading of websites. I'm wondering if this is typical for most Proxomitron users. Does using Proxomitron while browsing the web slow your speed considerably? Also, I'd like to know what configuration file you're using.
Thanks for any helpful replies. :wings

its unwise to use it because of all the writeups
theres a system problem that theyve been wrestling with for months. they still havent fixed it and it blows away the IE6 updates causing a system fault

Hmm, yes it blocks a few websites, but I just bypass it, then turn it back on when I need it, and it works great
I went through and completely redid the entire setup according to their help file, and I did it all for MY needs, you should really set your own up
How fast is your computer? it taks a lot of CPU to sift through the sites, my computer doesn't have a problem with it, and pages load faster with it on because it doesn't have to download the ads
I love the prox, I hate browsing without it

Yeah, I mentioned in the second sentence that I tweaked the configuration (after downloading the latest JD config files). Theoretically, it should speed up browsing by not downloading ads. However, I'm on DSL, and pages come up in a flash with or without the ads. I still don't like them though, because many of them flash and or float across the screen, blocking content and annoying me. Also, I like Proxomitron's ability to block other nasties on the web. Hmm, I think the slowness may have something to do with Proxo. modifying the page layout. Maybe it causes some lag. I guess I'll play with it some more.

of course the webfilters slow down the loading of sites. They have to scan the entire code, appy the rules and check for blocked urls in the blacklists. Only then when they are finished they pass the clean code to the browser. it takes its time. I am using webwasher.com proggy and it slows down the net, but what the heck? the pages look clean. and the time difference is minimal. I mean, everything is relative. webpages are still loaded faster on my computer than on dialup computers, even if I use webfiltering software, because I am on dsl.
You could try Ad Muncher, I heard it's extremely fast. as far as I am concerned, I am used to webwasher and not going to switch to anything else, no matter what the others say.

I've been using it for an eternity, and never noticed a lag. I use the default config files and modified them to my needs. When I first started using it, I experimented with various config files, and noticed that some worked better than others, both in effectiveness and speed. I would guess that the lag is a result of the config files you are using. Also, I put the Windows Update URL into my bypass list, and haven't had problems with it either.
Since we're speaking about lags: I help friends out a lot with their PCs. There's this one PC that shows a weird behavior with McAfee Virus Scan. When browsing the web, it seems that McAfee scans every page that loads in the web browser, and that scanning causes a horrible lag and a slowing down of the PC (mouse movements are slowed for instance). I have removed and re-installed McAfee on that machine to no avail. So for now, the poor soul switches that Active Scan off when browsing. Anyone got an idea?

Do you have the latest version, 4.4? they fixed the windows update bug, you don't have to add it anymore, it works automaticly
I agree, use the default filter, then tweak it to your needs, its the same as the huge ass host files out there, they slow down brosing A LOT (which btw you shouldn't use a host file and the prox)
When you have proxomitron running, check your cpu and mem usage when browsing compared to with it off, see how much of a difference there is
About McAfee, does that version come with the firewall? maybe its looking at a program like proxomitron and monitoring its activity, in effect double scanning the page for bad stuff
