Why does this happen

Help me please because sometimes when I am online my computer will just restart and no i do not have a firewall on.

We need more info than that, what OS are you using?

If you have XP, then go to your desktop, right click on "My Computer", then go to properties at the bottom of that menu

When you get there, go to the advanced tab, under "Startup and recovery", go to Settings, then uncheck the 5th box that says "Automaticly restart"

I am using win 98 se,
also when I go to shutdown my computer it just hangs on a black screen and if I don't flip the power switch at the back it just restarts

Are you using a file-sharing program at all? I ask because there are things about memory-leaks and frustrated nukers and so on that might be appropriate depending on Which One you are using.

I am using K++, clean imesh, shareaza and edonkey (I think thats all)

Get XP, and stop hitting reset. Check your motherboard. Could be motherboard.

Run a virus scan first of all.

Yep, get XP (I'm not mentioning any P2P programs that can you get that with), and if you don't want to do that, just reinstall Windows 98, if that doesn't work, you may need to reformat. If it's still messing up after reformatting with Windows XP, then you've got a hardware problem, I'd replace my power supply, check if the fan is running, if it's not that, you may have corrupted RAM (this happened to my friend, but he said he got a blue screen of death), if it's not that, then you've got a motherboard problem most likely.

Also, you might try going to start ----> run ----> msconfig ----> then click on the box that says "Load Startup Items"...make sure it's NOT selected as this just adds worthless junk to your computer.

I'd also try uninstalling everything that worthless on your computer. (Control Panel ---> Add/Remove Programs).

You can also try opening up your computer and cleaning out all the dust in there and making sure that your CPU is cool enough. Get CPUcool to find out if that's the problem.

Thanks for that, I have XP ready to install but there are a few things that may not work (like my modem) so i'm not to sure on installing it. My fan is running so i dont think its the RAM. Also i've just cleaned out the inside of my computer so i don't think its over heating. I dont think its the motherboard.
Please tell me what you think about if i should install XP or not

I am 99% sure XP will pick up your modem. If that doesn't work, then the manufacturer will have XP drivers if they are at all NOT fools.

Ok, first of all, we know NOTHING about this PC, except it pukes out. Therefore, we have NO idea whether it is a candidate for XP or not.

So go to PCPitstop and give it a go.

The next thing you can do, is use the Aida32 util to see exactly what your PC is like, and what you have etc.

Anyone that sends me a reports, I will examine their info to help them solve problems. I will tell you if you are a candidate for XP, or what needs to be upgraded.

cows my first guess would be a failing power supply. How old is your computer and have you upgraded any hardware on your machine at all? Dont know, it just sounds like you aint got the juice to keep your harddrive on constantly

Thats sorta why I haven't responded yet....we know absolutely nothing about this computer, there could be a million things wrong, and I have no clue where to start

An OS reinstall is the easy way out, at least it would be for me, but its not necessarily needed, and doesn't garuntee it will fix the problem, so I'd recommend slowing down, and listening to krell, he knows what he's doing, he can't wave a magic wand, but he should be able to help you isolate the problem

my pc is 3-4 years old
I went to pc pit stop and it said that i just need to update some software (like norton antivirus) but apart from that it is ready to go.
the problems seem to hve stopped for now so i think i will just buy a new version of norton and update to XP thanks for the help.
i got a new power pack (just incase i want to change it).
by the way what is aida for??
