i've heard that the index.dat files are a database of all sites you've visited, even after you told MSIE to delete them. Is this true in XP ( heard it wasn't). And, how could one look at these files? I saw a thread earlier that had a link to fuckmicrosoft.com that had instructions on how to view and delete these files in earlier versions of windows and MSIE5. I have MSIE6. From that site there was a link to forums where people said that MSIE6 didn't store this info, and no instructions for XP. i know every site you visit and probably every thing you do is stored by windows, just not how to get to it. I know there are programs that easily do this. would I be better off just getting one? I've heard evidence eliminator is the best, anyone agree or?????????

Window Wsher 4.8 (which you can get for a free 30 day evaluation trial) cleans out this file when you run it, it also cleans out a lot of extra junk and adds bleach to them when it deletes all of it so it's gone for good. you can get Window Washer here. The index.dat file is a hidden file, that you cant change the attribute on in the Temprary Files folder, and you can not see it there.

if you COPY all your temporary files to My Documents etc, then you will be able to find it within another folder, and you can view it with notepad.

Even if you can empty it there, you cant migrate it back to the original folder, and even if you could, it would be subsequently modified.

Now, regarding evidence eradication, what you guys purpose is overkill. There is no real reason to want to erase any evidence at this level, unless you are doing some SERIOUS no no!

Besides that, WHAT you do, and WHERE you go, is all recorded, so don't think that you can cover your tracks by deleting a single file.

So then really the thing to do would be to cut the drive into many tiny pieces and deposit them in various public garbage cans

Recomended that you wipe them, incinerate them, then destroy the platters with a hammer or bullet. Cutting or sanding the platters will work too.

But NOT over P2P or file sharing.

I use Evidence Eliminator. It does everything in one click. Lets hope you have $149.95 though. Unless...hey, youre not looking for cracks and/or warez are you? Because thats highly illegal and not what this site is about. I see your confussion because file sharing is virtually all about the sharing of copy righted material, but this site is (apparently) about the 1% of file sharing thats legal (e.g. non-copyrighted home videos, non-copyrighted fan fiction and...ummm...all the other non-copyrighted goodness that everybody here EXCLUSIVELY downloads).

I can only hope that the "no warez" rule here is only for to maintain pseudo legal status, and that the owners of the site arent deluding themselves.

By the way, I have applied a crack to my copy of Evidence Eliminator because Im zany.
