Welcome to Zeropaid chamcham.
Well, I don't know too much about WinMX but I know some stuff about the history of filesharing. I am not going to go too much into detail
Filesharing is basically you downloading files off of other people and they are uploading files from you.
Before there were any p2p apps you could download files from ftp sites and you could use IRC to share files. (They still exist today)
Then came along Napster, the first p2p app and is considered the grandfather of filesharing. It was extremely popular and was revolutionary. It made it a lot easier than the ftp sites and IRC. Also, the government was starting to crack down on some popular ftp sites. It is similar to filesharing apps today like WinMX except for it was missing a few features like muli-source downloading and resumable downloads. But it got shut down by the RIAA.
Then sprung up more p2p networks like Fasttrack (Kazaa and Morpheus), Gnutella (Shareaza, Bearshare, Gnucleus), Winmx, Audio Galaxy, and opennap networks. As time passed, more users connected to these networks and more apps were created. Now we have a few more like the Edonkey 2000 network (Edonkey, Emule), Overnet, Piolet, Ares, etc.
That is pretty much it. If you want me to go into more detail on a certain topic or I have missed something feel free to ask.
