make sure the ports winmx needs are mapped through your router's firewall.

Thanks for replying but i'm kinda computer illiterate. Are you talking about port forwarding? so far i can get into the router set up pages and know where the port forwarding options are. i have tried entering the ports of winmx into the port forwarding page but still it does not work.

Try this web site for info on how to config the router:

http://vladd44.no-ip.com/

It explains how to config routers for MX. Very helpful. I got it from someone here....

Hi mirror Mirror,
I found a helo web site for Linksys Routers
at http://www.linksys.com/tech_helper/video.html
Also I have a BEFW11S4 Linksys Router and I use WinMx also.
If you log in to your Router Configuration web page and click on Advanced then go to Port Forwarding.
Just enter the port numbers in the appropriate boxes and check UDP and TCP, I know you really should just check one or the other depending on the port number, ie. port 6699 you should check TCP and 6257 Check UDP, I checked both UDP and TCP for both and mine works. Also I entred the port 6698 in the first box and 6700 in the second, again even though you should put the same port nimber 6699 in both boxes. Mine works, so if it works maybe it was needed.
I also included a WordPad file with a screenshot of my settings in my Port Forwarding Settings,
The name is Linksys Port Forwarding Settings.rtf

Good Luck
Wilder
