View Full Version : Hard drive not showing correct used space

My C drive shows 1.65 gb used when in fact its probably more like 10 gb. The capacity is 16 gb. It used to show the correct number up until quite recently. I can only think that Im using a program FolderLock now, that hides folders. But most of the folders I chose to hide are on my D drive and it shows the correct space used.

Any ideas? I suppose I can just manually add up all the files to make sure that I dont get near the capacity, but that would take needless amounts of time.

When you formated your hard drive, did you enable large disk support?

Sounds like lieing in Explorer is a feature, just not one thats working correctly.

Can you walk backwards, and unhide those folders, all the way, and see of you undo the problem?

At least you would know the real nature of the problem, and not have deeper concerns.

It may be that your software is incompatible with your O/S or file structure.

I never formatted so large disk support isnt it. Ill uninstall the program and see if anything changes, but permanently uninstalling it isnt a real option for me.

It is worth running scandisk if you havn't already though 8GB of lost clusters would be quite unusuall.

Open My Computer > Right click on drive > Click Properties > Start Scan Disk > Problem solved.....

Peace

Ill be damned, its back to normal now. I didnt even do anything out of laziness, other than uninstall and re-install Opera (which recently became messed up). Everything seems in order now, though.

By the way, CCSDude's advice sucked diseased monkey testicles and was made all the worse by his over-confidence that running scandisk would solve the problem.

It's not very nice to ask people for help, then dis on them when they give it to you (especially a mod). Next time you'll be lucky if anyone helps you.

And 3rd it.

I think it's treacherous to say some one elses advice, "scandisk" in this case, sucked monkey balls, when a person was too lazy and irresponsible to have done that basic first things first !

zaphodiv was correct, it isnt plausible that he lost 8Gb of even free space, and is still operational. However, without having done a scandisk, EVERYTHING else is presumptuous and speculative.

The issue is with the softwares intervention of the GUI and Explorer, the FAT, the Master File Table, also involves user rights and group policy, depending on which O/S your are talking about. If a software is going to write shit down on a sticky note to keep track of, it had BETTER be correct shit, no?

SirNigel, I went on a limb to assist you, a sort of goodwill gesture, . . kinda bury the hatchet stuff, and to my disappointent you give a scathing lack of appreciation and admonishment to a senior member who exercises sound diagnostic methodology.

If you mistake a simple correct answer as over confidence and a waste of your time, I advise you to team up with Galileo and we wish you all the luck in the world.

SirNigel, with the manner that you respond to people here, you might find that any future assistance will be greatly diminished.
In other words you will probably be told to suck monkey b***s.

Wow SirNigel you really did it this time.. maybe if you lost the bad attitude and superiority complex then you would have a place here.

As for now, you just a troll in my eyes.

MoonMan, he is way beyond troll, He gave everyone hell on the OLD Morpheus forums, he denies it is him, but, same name, same smartassed know it all better then you attitude.

Everyone just write him off, you can give him chance after chance, it doesnt matter he wont make peace, or friends with anyone, he will continue to shoot his mouth off and start shit with everybody even when it come to topics as benign as this one.

My issue was with the patronizing tone of CCSDude's message. Had he said "try running scan disk" instead of going through the steps so thoroughly, I wouldnt have mentioned it. Also, being so falsely sure in his advice is annoying, especially when its clear that his advice couldnt possibly help. As somebody said right before, nobody has 8gb of lost data.

Additionally, I have no idea what boards youre even talking about Psixilas. You even remarked earlier that my English as improved dramatically. Wouldnt it stand to reason that if somebody has a greatly increased writing ability in short period of time, that its in fact a totally different person? Im not the only Sir Nigel, you realize.

I dont care . . . if you are hooked on phonics . . . .. f****** 18 HOURS a day ! Being rude, ungrateful and fecicious is a bad trait, no matter where or who you are.

If CCSDUDE had said " Now right click on the Start menu and Chose > Explorer, then right click on your C: drive, and chose > Properties . . . . ." you would have accused him of being condescending.

I remember someone coming totally unglued once when I simply asked if they had rebooted, as if it was SO beneath them.

Next time, IF theres a next time, try some tact, and dont bite the hands of the community that feeds you. Like I said before, we may forgive, but we dont forget.

And for the record, NONE of us are 100% all the time, we do our best I think, to properly digest and disseminate the amount of data and requests that pass thru these forums. If this is not good enough for you, I have prescribed an alternative that im sure you will enjoy.

Soooo you confuse simple, easy to understand instructions for condescending arrogance?

The fact is a bad shutdown is one of the main reasons for 'disappearing' HD space. You end up with a screwed up FAT information sector that reads off bogus HD space. ScanDisk will fix the problem if you untick the auto fix box. It'll fix it either way, but since you doubt it seeing the box asking if you wish to fix it should rectify your disbelief.

Other then that I find you to be one of the dregs of ZP and I wish you the best of luck on pushing some of the mod's and admins enough to ban ya.

Peace

No I didnt.

If he had said, " well . . . . I misunderstood . . or over reacted . . . or the dog ate it . . ." or whatever way of squaring up, no one would have said anything more.
