Dude, the AVI is just a 'shell' for the video.

It's like a template, nothing more, sooooo the codec is everything, plus it's ALL in the codecs format.

Not just a header on the AVI saying decode in DivX 5.1 or whatever.

So short answer....nope, not in a million years. You'll always have to convert the file if you wish to change it.

However, you MAY be able to change afew headers to fake out some stuff....

Like replacing WMV1 with Div3 (just an example).

If the codecs have the same decoding scheme but you refuse to install the WMV one then that would save yer ass.

Peace

Oh, i see! So the codec the one with the compression? cuz i notice a big difference in file sizes after i convert them, and thats why i was just asking about removing of the codec, but thanks man.

you should write a FAQ about videos, and all that stuff, you know alot about it!

I understand that the divx playa can let you view a video at different aspect ratios, but I want to change the aspect ratio without reencoding so that I can watch it with Windows Media Player. Right now it's 528x288, and it's squished, it's supposed to be 576x432, how do I change the header so it will do this?
