View Full Version : internet explorer problem...

I am utterly confused and utterly pissed. Pop-ups no longer work in internet explorer. Not just ads, [i don't even use ad blocking software], but even the ability to right click on a link and "open in new window" has become very......buggy, i guess. Whenever a new window is supposed to be opened, it does, yet the area where the page is to be displayed is either blank, or clear [it just shows whatever was there when the window opened.] The status bar remains empty, and that damn little spinning globe on the Windows logo just spins and spins. Its a bit hard to describe. In order to actually get to where popup windows are supposed to get me, I have to click 'Stop' and then the address appears in the address bar and I must click 'Go'. However, more than one window of IE can be opened by running the program itself several times. This problem even occurs when browsing in Offline Mode. I have reinstalled IE, and even upgraded [twice, now i'm using IE6, which I really wanted to avoid], and nothing has helped. I have even gone through different registry entries, by backing up IE entries, then deleting certain keys and tweaking around to try and find the source of the problem. I even went to microsoft's support site, which had an article on the exact problem, but none of the solutions listed had any result. The only way I see left is to reinstall Windows, which I tried awhile back to fix another problem, but THE DAMN SETUP PROGRAM CRASHED AT THE SAME TIME 10 TIMES WITH THE SAME ERROR [sorry for the caps] and I really don't want to go through that process again.
This problem surfaced suddenly, in the last 3 days, where it seemed to be less noticeable, and only happened rarely, but now, every window is affected. The only programs I have installed recently are Opera 7, Kazaa Lite [K++ 2.03], and nothing else I can remember....

I tried to describe my problem in as much detail as I could, and if you have ANY possible solutions or ideas, i'd appreciate it, cause I have tried all I could think of.
OS: Windows ME
Browser: IE 5.5SP1, then IE5.5 SP2, Now IE6SP1

I attatched a crappy screenshot, if it may help

Thanks,
Andrew

maybe you're running out of memory ? how much ram do you have?

could also be a slow connection perhaps?

those are just a couple of thoughts:fire

That happens to my computer every once in a while

Either I'm running low on resources, or the website is down, in which case it will load till it times out, then goes to a normal window

If you're running K++ at the same time, exit kazaa, it can be a resource hog, especially the newer versions if you're multisourcing

BTW, thanks for including a lot of info, you have no idea how much that helps in most cases...saves a lot of questions

Yeah, it used to happen to me occasionally too, but now it happens every time, regardless of [anything.] Even in safe mode, while in offline mode, whenever.

I found some good stuff at http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/internet_explorer.htm
and I'm still playing around with it....

I also remember trying out IE++ a few days ago, but I could never even get the toolbar to be availible to show up, so I uninstalled it, but it might be messing other things up?

Still working, but this is getting old, and the same phrase runs through my head over and over: "WTF?"

*Yawn*
Other browsers work fine, yet I shall not give up on this shitty problem.

Simple suggestion, since you've got ME you can use the System Restore feature of it. You say the problem has surfaced in the last 3 days. Use the System Restore to go back to the settings from 4 days ago or before. If that doesn't help then you have a bigger problem that I don't have a clue about.

Well, after sifting through a considerable load of crap, I discovered oleaut32.dll had been replaced or corrupted or whatever, and I reinstalled and re-registered it. The same problem actually affected InstallShield and some other windows things [like "find on this page"] as well.

Sadly, I'm back in the world of pop-up ads that actually load.
