Where are you? Where have you gone? My beloved Soulseek for the coolest, hard-to-find stuff?

Can anyone shed light on this matter? Haven't been able to connect for a few days now.

Damn, it won't connect for me either. Must check forums for answers...

Uh oh, the website appears to be down as well. What in tarnations is going on here???

Looks like the best P2P ever (IMHO) has been shutdown by RIAA. That's at least what I saw on their board before it became unreachable. AAARRRGGGHHH!

Well, the fact is that it seems like Soulseek is unreachable worldwide, at the moment, either the app or www.slsk.org.

I was able to access some French forums dedicated to Soulseek (since Slsk's official forum is also down!), and they have two kinds of explanation for this :
- The programīs creator and server owner, Nir, has unplugged the server that hosted the main information and connection databases, for a number of reasons : problems with file queues, execssive memory consumption, unexpected crashes, configuration probelms, and, most importantly, his disappointment at the fact that a program created for fans of electronic music is slowly getting infested by mainstream, Britney Spears-type of crap and getting more RIAA attention.
this is another possibilty...that this could be the work of the RIAA...donīt forget that SoulSeek site is registered by Nir himself.
- Another explanation that came up right before the forum went down is taht there was going to be an update. We just donīt know if it was on ther server or the application itself...

Speaking for myself, I hope itīs the latter...for now, Soulseek is dead...

Hmmm... Been following the SoulSeek board for the past few days, and among the rest it had a poll conducted by Nir, in which he asked people which SoulSeek problem was the one they'd want him to fix first (including all the issues you raised at your post). As the poll was only opened 2 days ago, I can't believe he took the software off the air for an update so quickly. :mellow

Can't say I've tried a search for that kind of style so I wouldn't know about that.......but I've been finding so much brilliant Moog / ondioline early synthesizer recordings from the late 1960s and it's been a real goldmine. Things by Perrey-Kingsley (1966's "The In Sound From Way Out"), Dick Hyman from 1969, and all sorts of kooky stuff.

Being almost like a popular music historian, I love to plunder the depths of previously explored corners of music history, and some of these recordings are out of print and you just can't find in a store anywhere on cd (at least, in my country).

So if it's the RIAA involved here, I think they have no business poking their nose in the case of such loopy old now-publically-unloved recordings, and should be available on programs such as Soulseek for us popular music historical thrillseekers. Soulseek is mym p2p program of choice, so much that I stopped using Kazaa Lite. In the meantime, I've gone back to Kazaa Lite and downloading old Oblongs episodes. Just can't seem to find the music I want on there (and if I did find anything, chances are it would be faked or looped anyway).

Hurry home, Soulseek............ :fire please come back to me......

I would agree, I use soulseek ALL the time to grab rare recordings of whatever style that I am exploring.

It is indeed a loss, however there is hope :-) On the soulseek FAQ, it said that Nir might allow users to host networks if he needed to; the only reason that is not allowed at the moment is because of the donation system.

As for britney spears mainstream crap, as long as you are sharing some variety of music I don't think it matters. Myself, I have electronic music, hip/trip-hop, rock, AND pop, so there's no reason I can't share pop as well, as long as it's not the ONLY music.

Oh, my. I hope that Soulseek will back on track soon. I know that there was an accident once, when Soulseek wasn't working for a week and then new site (slsk.org) was created. Hmmm...:mellow

Soulseek is alive and well..The good people at Napjunk have gotten in touch with NIR....He is simply switching webhosts...Since their IP cache uses the same IP as their web server (shareaza part 2), the network is not accessable...

You can read our story on this here:

or Napjunks Q&A here:

Phew guys you just made my day. :gj
Going through the links you have posted, I'm beginning to understand how SoulSeek community became so great, as It truely had a global underground spirit. I guess that the fact it had been kept strictly a music p2p proggie is one of the reasons for that.

good is a relative term--if you like dj ___ trance remix then yeah, you'll probably like it, if not don't bother

as for "community" nothing beats the ability to "ban" a user from your stuff (for having huey lewis or whatever stupid reason) really makes people want to share with you

don't forget that the program is the buggiest piece of crap ever, and if you want to share more than 10GB, prepare for the program to hang for 45 minutes to an hour while it readies your list

Notbob is the one who wish death for Soulseek. So don't even bother to read what he have come up with.

And Notbob is also wrong, when he's saying that there's only electronic music on Soulseek. Mad, mad hater, i guess He's also saying that its the buggiest piece of crap, because his RAM is not working well. Soulseek works like a charm, if you have a decent comp.. Like i said - don't bother to read what he had wrote :mellow

the only 2 times i used soulseek i went to one of the metal hubs :D

PornMaster
February 5th, 2003, 08:01 AM
It's Hub based? ahh forget i even asked about that program! If i wanted a Hub based thing, I'd join IRC!

Shadow, Thief of the Sun

PornMaster - Nope, its not hub-based. There's just some chatrooms for people, and that's what one of the previous posters was talking about.

As much as I appreciate notbobīs input on ZP, I feel heīs being a bit unfair here.
Like Iīve said on some other occasion, SoulSeekīs reputation as an "electronica-only" p2p app is unfair. That type of music is really the main feature on SoulSeek, but you can easily find other types of music, especially heavy rock, as I myself have recently obtained many "back up copies" of rock albums which I had "lost" after "buying" them.
However, though not being hub-based (you are able to search the entire network), SoulSeek has many different chat rooms, some of them dedicated to a specific "theme" or kind of music. So, youīll be able to find fans of 50īs music, jazz, prog-rock, etc., etc.
SoulSeek is mainly about music, but you can find other stuff there (for example, thereīs a "Divx Only" room...).
As for bugs, Iīve used Slsk on a an old machine with 96Meg of RAM and WIN Me and never had problems. On my new computer, no probs either.
Itīs true that, if you have a lot of shared stuff, the program might sometimes take some time to start, since it "scans" your shared folders now and then. But thatīs not everytime.
Itīs main problem is itīs centralized nature, which leads to this type of situations weīve seen in the last few days.
Besides, I love the buddy list feature, the wish list, and the ability to download entire folders with one click...

Goddamn, lucky me for not reading notbob's posts before I started using SoulSeek, otherwise I'd miss the best p2p app by far. True, my favourite styles are electronic and alternative stuff, turning the day I discovered SoulSeek to be the front door to heaven; But the app and network also have their advatages. Like WhitePony mentioned, the Chatrooms, buddy lists and wish list features are great. The uploads and downloads also have fairly high speeds. Best thing though remains the "community": Concentrating mainly on music, with lots of users sharing many files, mostly with high quality (unlike lame Kazaa).
Still waiting for ya dear.

...Oh and banning an unsharing user ain't that bad either (don't think anyone dreams of banning anyone else for having Britney in their shared files).

Seems as though a lot of unofficial sites are saying its just a temporary down, the last major one of these co-incided with a new patch, so maybe we will get that again :) that would be cool for the best p2p around. Since Audiogalaxy anyway.

As far as I'm concerned, soulseek is a sub-standard client holding a lot of great content hostage.

The need for a decentralized network conflicts with the author's desire to make some money from the project.

I used it once. Kinda sucked. Oh well, my opinion. I hope the SoulSeek gestapo(heheh MoonMan) don't take my post too harshly.

Hehehehehe.
