Sometimes I'll have a song in que to download and I'll later do a search on the same song but search won't find it again, yet it's still in my que. Then when it comes time to be downloaded it disconnects. Any ideas? Thanks.

and if you are sharing, then its bc you got disconnected from your 'ultrapeer', if it doesnt say 'online' in the title bar, then you aren't gonna dl anything. it could also be bc your 'ultrapeer' changed... the different peers above you arent connected to the same people... so 'johndoe' on one 'ultrapeer', you won't necessarily find on another.

Thanks for your response. To the person before you, I am sharing!

Where will I find the designation "Online?" Is it where the Que # resides? Also, how do I make sure I'm on a "good" ultrapeer? A fellow user critized me a while back for being on a "bad" net. Is this the same as an ultrapeer, and if not, how do I get on a "good" net that won't get me disconnected? Thanks again for your help.

you can find out whether you are online in 2 places: the first is the 'network' tab. the 2nd is in the title bar (up at the very top of the window ^ )

you cant really make sure you are on a good ultrapeer but you can tell sometimes by the following signs:

- you do a search for a song that you had gotten a lot of hits from earlier, and get no results, or very few.
- you want to dl a song or whatever, and the file says "waiting for network reply" for a while (more than 15 seconds) or it times out at waiting for network reply
- in the bandwidth graph, right after you connect, it should not look very spikey, it should go up and come down, no more than about 5 times. otherwise, the ultrapeer you got is very busy, or is trying to use more bandwidth than they really have.

if these signs start showing up, go to the networks tab, and click refresh.

sry, missed that.

no, in opennap, refresh does nothing. but in opennap, when you search, once the results stop coming in, you have searched everyone... there is no way to reach more users on an opennap server.

so, if ya cant find something on opennap, nobody has it on that particular server. but the more servers you have, the better luck you have for finding it.

Thanks for your response. Just to clarify, when you say, "so, if ya cant find something on opennap, nobody has it on that particular server". Isn't it "just at this particular moment in time?" At another time, with different users active, I might get the download then, correct?

yes :) thank you for not falling for the shittiest p2p ever (kazaa)

its nice to see somebody who can handle a real p2p net like winmx.

Hi. I tried to uninstall winmx to reinstall it, but the old version(s) stay on my computer. Now I have about 4 of them, and I can't find them in my "add/remove programs". Can anyone help? Also, can anyone tell me how to speed up uploads? Thanks!

How exactly did you "uninstall" it? if through ad remove programs, it should be gone

After you go through ad remove programs, find the programs file folder, and delete that, it should be completely removed (you may have to delete start menu shortcuts also

Then reinstall

Thanks for your reply. I tried that, but then when I reinstalled, it said it already exists! I have about 3 different winmx programs with 3 different screen names, and each different one could just randomly show up. I still can't get rid of it, despite your advice!

In kazaa lite 2.1 with k++ do the following:

Click Options -> Kazaa lite options.
(in other versions of kazaa just find the options)
Click the advanced tab and set the 'bandwith for transferring files to other kazaa users' to the level you want, preferrably unlimited. That way you let the users uploading from you take full advantage of your available bandwith.

Also, you can consider raising The number of users to upload from you simultainiously higher under the 'traffic' tab.

Hope this helps

Clean up your act missy.

Clean up you registry with this http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml

Then try installing WinMX again.

See Isis, I can recommend a program that doesn't work particually well for me without bias.

Hi Jenny,

1. to remove winmx.

First try the ADD/REMOVE programs control panel.

If you did that, and there are still more of them, you may have installed them as different users or something. If you have XP maybe you logged in as different people each time you installed it.

That's ok. Winmx does not put anything into your System Folder (WINDOWS) and it doesn't put tons of things into your registry either, so it's very easy to remove.

Just open WindowsExplorer so that you can see your folders, and go to this location: C:\Program Files\ Then see any folders that say Winmx there and if you put those into the trash, it would be gone.

By default, unlike other programs, Winmx doesn't put your songs in there, it puts them in your MY DOCUMENTS folder, so you don't usually have to worry about throwing out your songs if you throw out the C:\Program Files\Winmx folder unless you changed where your songs go or something.

If you installed the program several times, logging in as a different username each time, then all you'll have left is some shortcuts in your START menu which you can find and delete. They are in the Documents & Settings folder, under each person's name, and perhaps also in ALL USERS, inside their "Start Menu" folder.

2. to upload faster

Figure out what user you wanna be logging in as, and reinstall winmx if that's what you're trying to do, and then change your Queuing Slots, and your Bandwidth throttle settings according to how fast your internet service is. You never said if you have 56k modem, or cable or DSL or what.

Figure out if you have DSL or cable or whatever, and what speed, and Go to this page and read the chart to see the best setting for you:

http://winmxinfo.cjb.net/winmx/limiting.html

and for more help just go to http://winmxinfo.cjb.net

Thanks for the information! I will try the deleting method you told me, but the speed problem I still can't solve: I have a cable modem, but I don't have any limits checked off, so I don't know why it's so slow for the uploads. I'm not downloading anything, either. But thanks!

What is your advertised speed for your cable?

Some areas have great upload speeds, cable in my area sucks, I get 16k a sec MAX because its a 128bit upload stream

GâIileo>
March 7th, 2003, 10:36 PM
Sure Jenny.

Did you go to the site and read the chart?

Since I don't know your rated ISP speed, these are guesses, but
For cable,
set your Queuing to perhaps: 4
set your Outgoing bandwidth to perhaps: 300,000
set your Incoming bandwidth limit to perhaps: 50,000

Try that.

But what you really should do, is go see that chart at http://winmxinfo.cjb.net Those are the proper settings.

Call up your ISP if you have to, and ask them what speed your cable is. You want 2 numbers. Upload speed and Download speed. Like 384kilobits up and 1600kilobits down. Ask them what yours is.

You can also go to a speed benchmarking site and see what transmission speeds you are getting to see if they are close to what your ISP says you should be getting. A good one is http://broadbandreports.com/stest/ (a.k.a. DSLREPORTS) That's a reliable test site. Thermometer speed test sites are pretty much useless.

Run that test there, and then after it tests you and shows you the graph, bookmark the url and then post it here and we can look and see if maybe there's something wrong with your MTU/RWIN settings in your registry too.

If your registry settings are amiss, you can go to this site to get a program that manipulates your speed settings in your windows registry: http://cablenut.com ( stupid name, but good program.) Note that this registry optimization of MTU and RWIN settings is not for the uninitiated, it can get a little technical.

So just do the speed test and lets see your graph first, and we'll take it from there.

Copy and paste the url of your speed test results graph here.

Hi guys. Thanks for all that advice, but when I went to the sites to try to find my cable speed, I didn't really get it. I clicked on "east coast" since I'm from NY, but then it looked like I had to pay to find out my settings. I think it's too technical for me! All I can tell you is that my settings in Winmx says "allocated bandwidths: 7 Kbs out and 10.5 Kbs in." Does that seem right? I'm sure that's not enough info. for you to tell me anything, but I'm trying Thanks again!

phalkon30

So you're set up as a primary, good to know

Try changing to a secondary connection, right now, winmx is taking 7kb upload to maintain some network tasks, that bandwidth (which is most likely half of your total upload stream), is in some ways useless to you, leaving you with maybe 7k upload

No, jenny, it's free.

Just click

http://www.dslreports.com/stest?loc=2
"Test speed using our server at LinkLine, Los Angeles, CA, USA"

it's easy.

you'll get something that looks like this:

"allocated bandwidths: 7 Kbs out and 10.5 Kbs in." is fine, don't worry about that one.

Click the NETWORKS button and see if your says:
"Make a Primary Connection..."

or

"Make a Secondary Connection to the Network"

Which one do you have?

If you are secondary, then that up there doesn't even matter.

The settings I told you about above are "Queuing..." and "Bandwidth Throttle" instead of that one above. It's in the settings, you'll see it.

Duh, forgot those settings are still there even if you are under secondary....

What do you consider slow speeds? your internet is 768/128, which means you have a max download of about 90-100k a sec, and a max upload of 14-16k a sec (exact same thing I have)

You won't see great upload speeds, but if you aren't seeing what I mentioned above, you may have a problem

Ok, jenny, you did the test, but I mentioned to copy & paste the URL of the graph page so that you didn't have to copy and paste all that extra stuff. But anyway..

Now, did you call your ISP? And ask them what you are supposed to be getting? That way you can compare and see if all is good, or whether maybe something is slow.

So phone your cable provider and ask what you're supposed to be getting. 2 numbers. UP. and DOWN speed. in kilobits per second.

Are you running ANY program other than your browser? and do you just have one browser window open

These tests only work when they have full acess to your internet, they monitor how long it takes to send a file to their servers (upload), and how long it takes you to download one (download)

Also, current web traffic or load on their servers will effect your time, these tests are at best guess's, and should not be used as hard evidence of your connection speed (maybe some trouble shooting)

Talk to your ISP, they know for sure what you should get, and can work with you to get a better upload, I know around here the fastest up you can get is a 128k line, even if you upgrade to 1.5meg a sec cable/dsl, the upload stays

You can't have winmx running or anything that is consuming your bandwidth while taking a bandwidth test. Get off of everythig but your browser and take the speed test couple times.

I tried what you suggested, and I got consistent numbers - 1332 kbps download and 249 kpbs upload. And when I took off my bandwidth limit, I found out my cable company had indeed increased my speed recently!

The cable company said I'm supposed to be 1500/256, so the test was close. Thanks for the link! I now allow 5 upload spots.
