I followed Krell's advice and went to www.blkviper.com. Upon finishing the services configuration, I still have a few questions that need answering. Once I finish off this topic, I will move on to the Super Tweak section. Krell, I'll be conservative about. I promise. BTW Krell, I d/l SP1 now and did virus scan. I have only downloaded 10 of the 70 original programs so I'm taking it slow and easy.
First off, a little background: I mainly stayed with the "safe" configuration and even left some services alone cuz I felt they were a bit too "iffy." I also got rid of 2 services in the "strange services" section. Anyway, in all, I changed about 14 setrvices in this way. I started out with about 30 processes during an idle state and am now down to about 20. Boot time is a lot faster as well. I just want to know if there are anymore processes that I should change based on my task manager (from what you know). I also need help determining the same for my startup programs. Which programs/services/processes can I disable/set to automatic SAFELY? I will post 2 screenshots for you guys to see. (Sorry if the quality is bad, but I'm trying my best here).

Here is the 2nd screenshot allowing you to see which programs run on startup. If you have any questions, please ask.

You did well !
The SMC as you know starts the Sygate Personal Firewall Global User Interface, so you can click and make changes etc, leave that one.
You DONT need REG Cleaned to deselect those tho.
Let's pretend for a moment, that I secretly hate your guts. You get all the fine chicks, and I am a basement loser. So I decide, that you will have to spend a LOT of time, always working on your system. SO I say " Hey F R I E N D why dont you install these really really helpful apps and utilities, they all work together to produce one end result." What I said to you was absolutely true, they DO work together to produce one end result, a LOUSY one.
The screen shots are fine btw. When you view your Services, under Administrative Tools > Sevices, arrnage them by "Start Up" type, put Automatic ones at the top, this gives you a better idea of whats going on. Then look down the line, and see what else is "started"
Also, check your apps with the Microsoft Compatability page to see if the apps are XP certified. Some apps are just crap, plain and simple.

Does anyone know of a good site to download drivers? I just find it to be a pain in the ass to go to the manufacturer's sites? How well does Windows Update handle drivers? What kinds of drivers do you need besides modem, video card, and printer? Aren't those the only important ones?
Also in the super tweak section of www.blkviper.com, step #13 tells u to run bootvis. So I navigate to Start>Run>Bootvis and it won't run. I also tried in all caps. What's going on?
And yet another problem: I already installed a printer following the directions from the HP. Driver was already pre-installed with XP. I chose the right printer and corresponding driver and printed a test page successfully. Needless to say, it is printing fine. Only problem is at every startup, a pop up icon tells me that it has found new hardware. Then a dialogue comes up asking me if I would like to install the printer. What gives? It's already installed, so why does this keep coming up? I tried to reinstall it by choosing my driver again and it won't work. Any suggestions anyone?
Also, how do you make icons for your quick launch toolbar? I had way too many icons last time on my desktop and to have 5 little quick launch programs would be very helpful.
Thanks. I know it's a lot to take in......lol.

I can offer some help for your first question. Bootvis does not come installed on Windows, you have to download it from here. (http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/platform/performance/fastboot/BootVisdwn.asp?) Next just unzip it, and run it like any normal program.

I had a question about startup progs too.
Clone cd and nero both start up something at startup called Clonecdcheck and nerocheck or something like that...; Are tose thing really necesary for those progs to work?
I also would like to know if quicktime, omnipage and microsoft office require anything to be started at system startup, caus all those progs have a task running at startup.
Please help, any help would be greatly appreciated

I know Nero, Quicktime, and Office do not need to be loaded at start-up. I've had these programs on Win2k and WinME, and the first thing I did after installing them was remove them as start-up items. They're just a huge waste of system resources.

Sorry narz, I just now saw your post.
We cant actually call them services in ME, the end of the 9x O/S line. Although some of the file versions say "NT" on them, the Windows kernal isnt constructed the same as NT or 2000. In W95, 98, ME, we would be looking at "processes"
There are a few tweaks you can do to increase your resources, same as in W98. Check out this link.

See if you can change the "Typical Role of This Machine" to - Server, instead of Desktop PC.

that's pretty funny that you're trying to get rid of any and all semi unneeded services when you've got upwards of 850MB of RAM int that thing Rahwgwar. I guess you can never have to much.

ya I seem to be having the same problem with bootvis... ANy solutions?
Hey zebi, I figured out what the problem is. You probably, like me, tweaked teh windows xp services and disabled the Taskscheduler or set it to manual startup. For bootvis to optimize your system correctly, you must set it to start-up automatically.

It's pretty easy. I assume they're all shortcuts? Just drag the shortcut from your desktop down to the quick launch and it'll create an icon for it down there. Then you can remove the shortcut from the desktop.

first off rahwgwar, be sure that your taskbar button is unchecked to be able to add quicklaunch shortcuts, all you half to do is right click on your taskbar anywhere there is a blank space, i prefer right clicking on the time, when the popup window appears deselect lock the taskbar to be able to add quicklaunch programs.
if you use programs like kazaa, msn messenger, aol messenger etc, these programs in the installer usually have an option to add a quicklaunch button in your taskbar, if there isnt one just drag the desktop shortcut from your desktop to your taskbar.
you mentioned something about enabling disabling programs from starting up before, i saw a helpful app on the tv show the screen savers called mike lin's startup control panel, it's pretty much like msconfig, this is usefull if you run windows2k and cant run msconfig in the run box microsoft shouldve included msconfig in win2k, its in win9x and xp, the program is located here (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml).
nothin like doing a full day of system maintenence eh? lol have fun.
