What's the best download resumer for 56k? What has the most reliability and ease of use? Also it needs to not conflict with Sygate Personal Firewall or have compatibility issues with it. If you are wondering, Krell recommended SPF for me after my latest toils with the computer. If anyone has any tips or hints involving SPF, please drop a line or two. Anyway, a resumer would be helpful for when I get disconnected or my parents have to use phone. It would be nice to hear from fellow 56'kers. Thanks a lot for the help.

there are quite a few download managers. Opera web browser has a built in download manager a lot of people seem to like.

Also a freeware one that is good is star downloader.

go to http://webattack.com and check it out. That's where I found star downloader and you can see other there as well.

Use download accelerator (plus) 5.3, it's pretty nice, I use it for my cable modem and it works wonder (I average about 450KB/sec), and I just installed it on my friends 56K and it keeps the download at max bandwidth as opposed to starting out with 5.5KB/sec and being about 2.2KB/sec 15 minutes later. I am 95% sure it will work with sygate.

Well I overall recommend MetaProduct's Download Express, I find it to be the fastest download manager available, the only problem I've had with it is that it sometimes has a few conflicts between it and the browser as it will on occasion try to download a JPG, JPEG, or GIF displayed on a webpage, but other than that it rocks. But if you want just something basic that lets you resume your downloads I recommend Star Downloader, it's not as fast as Download Express, because with DE I could get download steady speeds of 8 kbps, but with Star I saw no improvement. Your choice weather or not you want a basic one or a speedy one, both offer the resume feature though.

Also, I myself run Sygate Personal Firewall Plus, and have never had any problems with them at all.

i know DAP (Download Accelerator Plus) is a popular one. but it has crapware. although i've never tried a d/l resumer or exceller, that one seems popular on CNet's Download.com (http://download.com.com) you'll see it on the front page. but i don't recommend it, i've heard there are better one's out there. i think DAP is like the Kazaa of d/l resumer's. (you know what i mean, everyone uses it)

I don't use any.....if you connect via broadband and use PPPoE just use Ras for your connection or use a reg tweak to get the best MTU throughput....

I get downloads in the 100+ kbs range off most 'professional' sites that have content for download.

I use ReGet Deluxe, it works fine on my computer with a Firewall. I have used GetRight and Gozilla, but i found ReGet to be more stable and reliable. get it from www.reget.com.

Do you have 56K?

Wow.........so many choices. I guess there is no clear cut winner when it comes to this topic. Everyone has their favorites. I will check with spychecker to see if any of these have spyware. The url is www.spychecker.com if your'e interested. I guess all I can really do is trial and error and see what one works best with my system. I'll try a couple of them for the next couple days and see what I like. Any benchmark tests for dial-up anyone?

Using DAP pro, I took an 8 hr download to 1hr (linux cd), I find it works pretty damn good on broadband, nothing stelar, but it can gain a few seconds to a few hours depending on the site and file size

If you use DAP, run spybot, it will remove the crap, and it still works great

I want something that could integrate with Avant Browser. Unfortunately, not many IE plugins work with Avant. I was not impressed by Star Downloader in the speed factor. Plus it depends on Internet Explorer. And needless to say, DE is described as a plugin feature to Internet Explorer. I'm gonna look for some standalone products that work with Avant now because I just do not particularly like Internet Explorer and do not want to run it just to use a certain download manager.

Thank you for all your replies. Everyone gave good insight and supported their choice. Now it's up to me just to choose the right one.
