I'm quite new to p2p. Every time someone trys to download any of my files, they get timed out. Im on a 56k connection, but i manage to download from other 56k connection users. Im getting a lot of rude messages, and its not my fault, i happy to share. Would there be a setting somewhere that needs changed?

well, you may try:
in settings, go to the "file transfer" section...and raise the values pertaining to "pending uploads timeout" and "running uploads timeout"

Everything in that section is set as high as it'll go. It's doing my head in.

Thanks anyway.

reinstalling & keeping things as defaults is a good idea to try.
it could be a firewall issue as well. i was having a similar problem with winmx. i forget how specifically i fixed it...i think something i found in this site's faq or on vladd's help site.

Cheers.
I had a look at Vladds site (excellent source of info, tips and tricks for the beginer Vladd. Thanks for that) It might be my Zonealarm (free) which i'm gonna change in a bit, to mmmmmmmm Norton i think (for a while, to see how i get on). Also read the bit about ISP blocking. Although i have just changed ISP, my old one and my new one might be blocking. I have changed the ports used. Hopefully this will work, if it doesn't, i'll keep trying.
Thanks guys.

IT WORKED! I changed Firewall to one of the ones on Vladds site, and changed the ports. Not sure which did the trick (perhaps a combination of both) but it's working.
Cheers.

I'v just seen all uploads timing out in winmx. It was because I'm playing with the port forwarding through my connection sharing machine and incoming connections were blocked.
I don't use zonealarm myself but I think you could have solved the problem
by telling zonealarm that winmx is allowed to be a server.
You could have partially solved the problem by clicking settings-> click [+]
beside internet connection, set incoming TCP connections to "unable to accept
incoming TCP connections" and in/out UDP packets to "unable to send or receive
UDP datagrams".
Usually about 2/3 of the population of a P2P network is firewalled/NATed.
If you don't accept incoming connections you can only exchange files
with the 1/3 of users who have their door port open so your average download is lower.
I recall winmx tries to detect the correct setting at installation
but as you have seen if you tell it that it's open when its really firewalled
it happily sits there with all connections timing out.

When I get a series of attempted connections timed out in a row, with 0 bytes transferred (timed out waiting for incoming connection), it indicates the primary computer I am connected to has decided to call it quits. After a while I get a new primary computer to connect to.
