Just out of curiosity since the RIAA has won the right to force ISP to disclose people downloading files. Is there a way that they can track usage on Kazaa? How can we mask our identities?

well for one....we can stop using kazaa!! that'll mask our identity just fine.

But I dont think they can really "track" usage. By this I mean monitor what a person does....downloads.... etc. Im sure they can (have the technology and all or can obtain that tech through kazaa and isp's) but i think they're concerned with what we have already....meaning they track us by what we share. Thats just my opinion. I really have no idea. I try not to think about the RIAA. They annoy me.

I think they just get our IP adress and just notify our ISP(S)... or something like that i remeber some1 commenting on how they do it.... :fire

I switched to emule. What I DL in part is imediately ULed to others as chunks. They cant see what it is im sharing because the filename is "temp" till the DL completes then its automatically offloaded to private storage.

Well they can track ip's all they want..but then a problem arises....cause not all content on kazaa is illegal. I know a lot of ppl/groups that just share stuff (legal stuff) because its easy access for everyone and they dont have to upload to the web. How are they going to filter whats legal and whats not??

If they're willing to take action of whatever kind they better be damn sure they know what they are doing and why.

They have used 3rd parties like Ranger Inc, MediaForce & NetPD. They use programs like MediaSentry (the one Ranger uses) and perform a search. Anyone with offending files is sent a C&D (cease and desist) email, this is sent via their ISP, the ISP details are obtained from a WHOIS query on the offenders IP address that MediaSentry logs.

That's basically how it goes :;)

They can track you by using a modified Kazaa setup where your username is not a name but rather your IP address. They then run a check on that IP address to see whom it is that provides you the connection to the Internet (i.e. your ISP). Then they bully the ISP to reveal your contact details, thus they find out the "pirate p2p file sharer's" full name, address, etc!

TWO ways to get round this is:

1. Spoof your IP address. If you put a fake IP address when they run some checks on it they aint gonna find what it is that they are looking for :wings

2. Use a foreign proxy. For example do you live in London? Find out the details of a proxy being used in Ireland, that should sort you out (if not slow you down by just a tinker). If you're in Washington use a proxy from a distant state or even one from Russia :black

If you want to find out how to do all this, search in Google and don't ask me, I've done enough typing for one day - it's time to download.

Personally I am using Linux with the TIGHTEST security settings I could conjure up, a spoofed IP and a proxy in Belgium. :devil

Just a thought..... but I thought spoofing doesnt work.....

A quote from a few online articles:
"A common misconception is that "IP spoofing" can be used to hide your IP address while surfing the Internet, chatting on-line, sending e-mail, and so forth. This is generally not true. Forging the source IP address causes the responses to be misdirected, meaning you cannot create a normal network connection. However, IP spoofing is an integral part of many network attacks that do not need to see responses (blind spoofing)"

Maybe im wrong?? I dont really have much knowledge of spoofing though. Just talked about it a few times.

I think the only way you can potentially "hide" your address is to hack a second computer and use that computers internet connection to mask yours. Or even go as far as having the hacked computer hack a third one and use its internet connection to mask the other two. But even this way....can be traced back to the original IP address. I know this is one of the ways the oldschool hackers used to work. Just some info. Im not a hacker so i have no idea. I just share files for a living :-)

Also if we are going to try to protect ourselves...we really have to think about 1 how smart they are (RIAA + ISP's) and 2 what kind of resources they have access too. Im not sure us average joes that we can out smart them ya know what i mean.

I made my own spoofing software in Linux using C++ and my Linux box is used ONLY for the webpages and p2p -thus far I have not had ANY network problems as stated in the article pasted in above! :shy
