im defnitly gonna get this for my box!

Overview

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Project Dreamix will turn the Microsoft Xbox into the ultimate home entertainment center. Right now we are in the alpha phase of course, but below is what we plan to complete before Beta release: -

PVR Features (Scheduled recording, fast forward, rewind, pause Live TV)
Video Playback (Based on Linux MPlayer - all popular file formats)
Audio/Music Playback (Based on Linux MPlayer - all popular file formats)
Image Viewer (Slideshow + Photo album)
Setup Menu (All configuration will be done with the Xbox controller and/or DVD Remote with the use of a graphical keypad)
Although Dreamix will be based on Debian Xbox-Linux, all necessary libraries will be included in the distribution of the CD image and will auto-excecute upon being inserted into the Xbox DVD drive. This will allow for a friendly install by the average user.

Note: There will be a need to purchase a hardware add-on for video input since the Xbox gaming console does not currently have video inputs etc.

Why Dreamix?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"For a very long time, I had been developing software called VWare, 2 years ago the project was going well but found myself losing interest, and not having enough time. Now with the Xbox supplying the hardware power needed to take my old VWare project into a new realm, the Dreamix team had the idea, why not Personal Video Recording on Xbox? Ill be honest, I can not stand Tivos, ReplayTVs,Dish Network, DirecTV TV guide systems, menus and what not. I am a very picky person who wants my entertainment and system to give me a feel of power, worth my money. I have spent too many years watching the industry do things wrong and only 'hoping' more would be added. They are slowly getting there but I am personally tired of waiting and the impatient person I am, I am going to do it myself." - Lenn0x

get a mod chip, and you can do this all and more already with the linux xbox project. also, the possibility of a no-modchip-version is near. that'd be sweet.

here is the site at which you can get this for your xbox: http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/

im thinking of goin out and buying a used xbox and tinker with it so i can get linux on it.

I'm not a fan of that green piece of shit, but if they keep comin' up w/ these kinds of hook ups for the big green poop machine, then i just might be inclined to steal someone else's, LOL

the only problem i have with a mod chip is that then you cant use xbox live if you use ripped games + the warranty isnt good anymore. i was thinking the same as you, i may go buy a used one on ebay or somethin and mod it to the extreme. and a message to undermind, you dont see slowstation2 or gaycube in the guinness books for being the most powerful consoles do ya? NO!

You don't quite understand how game systems work, do ya?

The X-box is only a speedy little devil so game developers don't have to pull hair to code for it.

PS2 is a bitch to code on from what I've looked into, but the outcome makes the seemingly slow CPU and ram/ect a moot point when it comes to sheer graphics.

I'm guessing it's the same for GC.....

X-box is a POS if looked at in certain lights, however, I'd buy one just to mod the fuck outta it and turn it into a Linux/DivX/mp3 player.....sooner or later MS is going out of the console business and I'll be there when they're crappo system drops to 40 bucks just like Sega Saturn. Which btw has many lil mod goodies.....25 bucks and I can play my NES/SNES/Sega as well as slow 15fps Divx and Mp3 on a real console....no more tapping keyboard keys for NES or using a NES pad I modded to hook up through serial. That damn thing never worked right 100% of the time anyway. LOL

LOL, thinx me struck a nerve, i never said i was a fan of any, just cuz i got the shinobi avatar don't mean i have a PS2, I just like me some shinobi (and he looks pretty damn cool). I don't want to get into a huge fan-boy argument, cuz I am not all that attached to any console, but for the record I do have a gamecube, and only a GC, mostly cuz it costs less, and I want to play the newer versions of the franchises i grew up w/, I would love to have all 3, but I am not rich or spoiled, and yeah it sucks that some games dont come my way, but I'm not gonna cry about it, I have many reservations about the box, but that's a diff thread, ne way it's cool if u bump uglies w/ the green beast, LOL im just messin man, peace

yeah... thats why i'd go for a used one... warranty is prob gone already, and its cheaper.

as for the actuall modchip, you can install it in parallel with the original chp, allowing you to run games and unsigned material. i suppose if you really wanted to, you could even put 2 mod chips in; one for linux; one for unsigned games.

the thing with the linux-xbox though is you have to mod the controller ports to use an usb keyboard and mouse. so even if you dont need the mod chip (it will eventually happen), you'll still have to rip it open to change the ports. maybe somone will come up with a xbox-port/usb port converter. then you could still retain your warrany.
