I guess I have a few more questions.

1) I have a few songs I picked to download, but they've been on the transfer page for 2 days now. Why are they not downloading?

2) When I was checking my download list yesterday, someone started to upload(?) from me. I didn't have that much time to stay online, so I shut down. Is this okay to do? Did I mess up the other guys download?

And finally,

3) Should I stay away from songs that have a lot in the queue? Does that mean other people are waiting for the download?

Thanks!

1) Press Find more Sources for each of the files and set the find more sources time period to 10min by right clicking on the file =)

2) DO NOT shut down or cancel someone that is uploading from you.. that person is downloading a file from you and they got canceled.. Only do this when you have to exit the program.. When you are on and will be on.. dont cancel anybody (you are sharing your files with other people which is very good)

3) Yes, if you see songs that have like 20+ in que than by all means stay away from them.. Try to download only ones that are avaiable.. if you find yourself in a que just press find more sources by right clicking on the file..

If you need anything else.. I will be glad to help you out =)

Thank you for your quick reply! Just curious though, why would people pick the ones that have over 20 in the queue? I've seen some with 99 in queue.

I do have another question. I was just downloading something and it got to about 25% and quit. Does that mean the other person shut down? Do I cancel that one and look for a different one now?

Thank you!

Okay, I have another question. I just downloaded what I thought was ********** ********** ******. It took over an hour to do. Well it's not the right song. It's a different artist all together. Do people do this intentionally? How do I know if I'm going to get the right song? I right click and "search for alternates" but nothing ever comes up in the search...ever.

I also have a question about sharing files. A friend just told me that other people will be able to put things in my shared files folder, including viruses if they wanted to. Is this true?

Thanks again!
Nat

Look for a large number of people with the same file, it usually works for me. also the other thing you are talking about, they might be talking about ghost files, or files that appear to be on your pc but arnt there. i use a secondary connection, and never have had a problem with them.

Short of someone hacking in your system the only way you can get a virus while filesharing is if you download an infected file yourself. You're only one that can put something in your share folder. At least as far my experience with viruses in p2p. You want to get yourself a good anti-virus program.

Thank you for answering my questions.

I have another. Should I delete that ********* ********** fraud song out of my shared folder so noone else gets the wrong song?

Thanks,
Nat

the best way to check if ur getting the right file thats worked for me 9 times out of 10 is when u have it on ur download screen right click it and click on the option find alternitive and if the result shows a different file name then ur most likely downloadin a fake

3.21 is the current version...I really don't like WinMX with all those stupid ques. They could speed the network up if they didn't have them..

Suggest that once your DL has commenced, and you have acquired a moderate percentage of the file, you simply rightclick on it and Open. If it's the correct file, let it complete, and if it's a mislabel, rightclick and Delete File.

And always delete mislabels - no point in propagating them.

And I think you get a better result from "Search for similar" - "Search for alternates" is too precise, and to the best of my understanding will only produce the same results as "Find sources now".

Thank you Passer! I'll remember to do that when I download.

You can "kinda" preview what your downloading ! I try to get about 5-10 percent of a file then right click and (play) this way I can find out if it is the version I'm looking for without spending alot of time on something I don't want......

Hope this helps.........

Also, if you do a search and get many results, just click on the + to expand them. If you see different song titles, chances are you are getting a fake. Also i dont like the Qs, but i can usually get what i am looking for, a lot of the regulars start to know you as a sharer, and not a leacher. For the ones in my Q tonight, stop sharing only your bloody partial downloads.

If I'm running some transfers and I click on the "X" to close WINMX, a box comes up to give me some options. I usually choose the first option...to wait until all transfers are done and then shut exit WINMX. But, what if just as my downloads are about to finish, someone starts to upload from me and I don't want them to because I really have to shut down? Is there a way that I can keep people from uploading from me while I am waiting for my transfers to finish?

Thank you!

January 26th, 2003, 03:20 PM
Close your upload slot I would imagine or send the end user a message telling him that you will be getting offline soon.

Wolfie
January 26th, 2003, 03:25 PM
Well, in spirit of sharing this not exactly the coolest thing to do but, if you have transfer going you can disconnect from network and still maintain the download (and uploads too). Since you're disconnected from the network to can't be searched for and ergo no one can start a download from you during short amount of time you need to finish your download and shut off.

Before I get flamed, I have to say this should be used only if one REALLY, REALLY, REALLY needs to shut down and should NOT be used for leeching.

PS. If you have concel do what Ghost 23 says and at least PM them.

natscrafts
January 26th, 2003, 03:58 PM
Thank you. It would be only for when I want to finish a download before I HAVE to get offline. Otherwise, I don't mind sharing.

that's what i do.....i usually let the uploaders know that i will be getting off.
this is when i really need to just get off the computer for the phone to check messages......yeah i'm in the boonies on a dial-up.
if i'll just be over watching tv or something in the same room....then i'll keep an eye on the last one uploading and let them finish and then disconnect.
i'll tell ya though, some people just don't appreciate a nice gesture....oh the tales i could spin.
but don't worry too too much......they can resume from other users.....let's be reasonable......we do have lives outside of our computers......sometimes u just have to disconnect those uploaders.

natscrafts.......ur a good egg! ;)

Me again....just curious....

How can someone find out if you're a leech or not? Is there a way to see how many downloads and uploads a person does? It seems like there are so many users that it would be impossible for one to just keep track in their mind.

Thanks,
Nat

the first thing to do, is to see how many slots they have open for others to upload in queue.
or right click on their name and "whois" them. it should say there.
next, u right click on their name and "browse".
this should show how many files they have.
if they have none and r like downloading 30 songs, well most likely they r leeches, but give it a couple of minutes to show all of their files, it will say when it is finished.
but some will say they r new users or they lost all of their files.
but as some put it here......if ur using a p2p app, then common sense tells ya to share and to burn a couple of cds in order to do this, as u start a new mp3 list from winMX.
more or less....learn this fast or you'll be cut off.
period.

Can someone here help me and another person on that connection/router board?

Wolfie
January 30th, 2003, 11:35 PM
Look in your router option for opening ports. What you need to do is open two ports (6257 and 6699) in your router set-up program (router have internal firewall so you need open ports). The reboot the router (turn power off and then on) and check and see if people can upload successfully.

I had this prob a while back and it worked for me.

MVDU

I'll try it tomorrow (it's late here), and I'll let you know if it worked.

>What you need to do is open two ports (6257 and 6699)

Thats 6257 UDP and 669 TCP and you probably need to use the portforwardng option and give it the local address of the computer runnng winmx

MVDU

I got to the portforwarding section and put in those ports, but it will only allow the IP address of the host computer. Any ideas on how to get it to include the IP address of the destination computer? (I'm using a Dell router.)

oops, typo, thats 6699 or whatever winmx is set to.

Erm, I don't know what you mean by a host computer? How many computers do you have and how are they connected to the router?

>Dell router
exact model number? link to the manual?

I have three comp on ethernet network with router on host computer (with cable modem). I'm not sure how your connected (networkwise) but I just opened ports on router by logging to router settings from the host computer. After the ports where open the other two (computers) just use external ip of router to connect to all other p2p programs that I use (I rarely use the internal IP of the other two). Unless you don't have access to host computer which could be a problem.

Well, I have the router downstairs, and it sends its signal up to my upstairs computer. The router has a LAN address, and it gives the computer upstairs that I use a WAN address. The router IP address should work, but I put the port numbers into WinMX, and nothing happened. If I go to a primary connection, I still can't get search results, either.

You can get details on the router here:

http://www.dell.com/us/en/biz/topics/sbtopic_005_truemobile.htm

I use the TrueMobile 1184 Wireless BroadBand Router. If you click on buy, it will tell you about it.

If your talking about message on Winmx, your little Winmx simble (lower right corner of screen) will flash with a little envelope.

I have another question. Now that my uploads are working, what is the optimal amount of upload slots to keep open? I keep 4 open, but it seems like even though I'm on cable, only a couple uploads out of the 4 move at decent speeds.

Can WinMX stay on with your computer off?

I'm not sure I understand your question, but if you mean the computer that winmx is installed and running on, yes it needs to be on.

You also have consider that some low upload rates can also be due slow connection from the other side as wel ppl downloading several files at simultaniously thus splitting the bandwith appropiated for their own downloads.

I have cable and I use put 4-6 slots on the average.

MVDU
February 2nd, 2003, 02:24 PM
Yes, that's what I meant. I can't leave my computer on all the time, so I guess some people will have to lose uploads.

I'll try using 6 upload spots. But, it seems no matter who is on the other side, my computer usually won't allow more than 14,000-15,000 bytes to be transferred.

Have you tried increasing the limit of "outgoing bandwidth" in bandwith throttle (or something like that) in settings?

CrAzYMaNiAk54
February 2nd, 2003, 02:51 PM
if you have 128kbps upload which is 16k just have 3 upload slots because that will give the users pretty good speed and they will finish their downloads faster.. instead of dragging at 1k all the time =)

MVDU
February 2nd, 2003, 03:51 PM
I don't have any outgoing bandwith set. Still, my bandwidth graph always stays around the same. Maybe I'll go to 3 users like suggested.
