Ahhhh at last cable access internet ... joy
But what to do with all that bandwidth?
Ding ! how about running a public service P2P server..... 24/7 ... Gigs of files ......?
So what do i need?
Cable internet ---- YEP !
Spare PC ---- YEP
UPS---- YEP
RAID Box --- YEP ( hey they where chucking it out ! )
OS .... Well i have windows...YUCK
and have MANDRAKE 9.... so it looks like linux insatll time :-)
P2P Server software....
Well i run Clean limewire and openwire... but a dedicated opensourse java server application would be dandy... with max gnuttella protocol suport and able to operate through a software firewall....
Helpful feature...
Ability to mirror popular files ( most common searches ?)
Restrict to MP3 only ( i dont apprrve of porn and neither do the cops!)
Good network stats monitoring
Course when i finally get round to setting up a commuity 802.11 WLAN it should drop right in :-D
so... comments ? tips? suggestions ? all welcome....
Abuse try to make it at least witty.

In reply to earlier discussions of a P2P server, I have a question about a proposal less grand, but still noble (I think, anyway).
I have a DSL line that sits unused most of the time. I've also got a 450mhz win2k server sitting on the end of the line, sitting unused most of the time. I've been running bittorrent and kazaalite on it, but both those programs require you to be logged in. I'm considering buying a 200+ gig HD and sticking it in the box so I can put all my archived movies, mp3's, etc for all to peruse via some sort of sharing mechanism, be it the earlier discussed solution, or simply kazaa or something.
What I want is a p2p app that can run as a service (preferably on the fasttrack network) so I can leave it running all the time. Better would be if it could allow connections remotely (or across LAN) so I could connect, search, and download without touching the server. Yeah I know DSL isn't that fast (only 256 up), but if everyone shares, everyone wins!
If you have any suggestions, or possibly know how to develop something like this, let me know. I know some win-based and web-based languages, but I think this would require something else. Or hopefully someone has already figured out the answer to the solution.

I also have a computer running 24/7
For XP Pro I recoment you a program called remote administrator to manage it from another computer (you don't need screen or keyboard)(mail me if u want)
If nobody are going to use this computer, just make kazaa (or others) start with windows, be sure that you have pass for www.grc.com to check your security.
I use emule, it "garantize " that you'll have uploads all the time, but isn't for mp3, so you can try winmx or piolet, etc
for gnutella i'll recomend shareaza ,
if u have linux, i 'd no idea, but i think ther's a edonkey/emule version, you can pack full albums and send the hash to shareactor or similar.

Gnutella programs are both the server and the cilent..
Limewire is written in java, and its open source and so if your going to be messing with the source code i would use that.
Also running your pc 24/7 increases the risk of getting the ISP letters and etc.
If you want to help gnutella then running 24/7 and being a ultrapeer would help if you want to run a server that would help the network then maybe you could check out running a gwebcache.

*Moved to general gnutella discussion*
Hmmm what about those Gwebcache2's? those are nice I think... If you want you can run A Slavanap or opennap server..running an Edonkey Server would be absolutely wonderful as well.. but For Gnutella I think Limewire has a "Limewire Peer server" and I think that would be your best bet.

Why don't you help contribute to The Freenet Project and run a node? Freenet makes much more efficient use of bandwidth and does away with all the lengthy queues that you find with other p2p networks.

Thats still a alpha. I would wait until its more widely used before using the next verison.
Opennap is a lost cause.

After much surfin while i was meant to be working i have settled on freewire as my trial gnuttella server software. It works pretty well and in a trail 12 hours upload i sent out over 350 files , which is coool
On the subject of ISP harassment , as far as those bloodsuckers are concernd its purly business traffic anyway , they charge enough as it is lol
On a related point i notice they scan my firewall from time to time , must be looking for open ports....... they bounce off anyway :-P
So its up and running people although i still dont have the full kit put together .... the UPS units are proving tricky ..... still it keeps me amused

DC seems like it would work best for you
What kind of upload speed are we talking here?
BTW, if everything works out, the RIAA would be able to identify you in court, so running that is a HUGE risk, just to let you know :)

yeah cable, your upload is probably...256Mbits? a whole 32KB/sec, that's almost enough to download some mp3s. We need more people on college OC-10's and crap to do this.

Don't know if I'm too late to add anything, but you might want to try GTK-gnutella since you have Linux. It can be run as a command line program, If I Remember Correctly, making it quite low on resource usage. Plus, it has compressed connections, making the most out of your bandwidth. It's very stable, which combined with Linux means you can leave it running unattended for extended periods of time. Hopefully, Server-side queueing and server-side PFS will be added soon (both are client-side only now). Hope this helps.

Thats the great thing about Linux - You make your own kernel and continue to be stable
