I just started using winmx a few weeks ago. So far, I am finding it "okay" but not very intuitive or easy to use. I am in Thailand and my dial up connection speeds are painfully slow but I am getting songs.

question 1-- Why isn't there a help menu on the winmx site? Very confusing to have to figure out every thing for the first few weeks w/o a "manual.. and the help is always "under construction".. is there no "help because of legal reasons?

I still haven't got everything figured out but thanks to the few winmx help sites, like this one, I will hopefully someday.

Q 2. I have started using the "WHOIS" key to id leaches. When I find them (and have time) I send a msg telling them "if they dont share, I dont share". If I dont have time to send a msg I just cancel them.

q2a- Is there a way to have a "saved" msg (Something like: "if you dont share, I dont share--bye bye") someplace that I would send when I find them?

q2b- When I BROWSE their files and there are no files (or very few files) with music ids and they are sucking a bunch of music files at that time, is it safe to assume they are Leaches and should be booted?

q2c- Is there someway to stop them from using my files again automatically once I know they are leaches??

Thanks for any info.

These are not dumb questions at all

Q1, my favorite help site for WinMX is http://winmxinfo.cjb.net/ , they have a very extensive help database, and a great forum

Q2, did I miss the question? lol

Q2a, if you want a saved message, then copy it to your clipboard (select, then right click > copy, or Ctrl + C), then when you want to send the message, hit Ctrl + V, or right click > Paste

There is another way to do this by making a macro with a quick key, my favorite program is Perfect Keyboard from www.pitrinec.com , you create macros, then you can hit a key combo like Ctrl + Alt + W for warning, and it will paste your warning, you can make as many macro's as you have key combos on the keyboard, the only problem is, its a 30 day trial, so you'll have to find a way around it ;)

Q2b, thats a tough topic, some would say yes, some would say no, I don't try to boot leechers anymore, its too hard to figure out if they are or not, but the majority of people are just un educated, so kindly tell them how to share, and if they don't, cut their fucking throats :cross

A good anti leeching program can be found at http://www.sharepoint.boo.pl/ , its called MXlinx, if you try that program, it may solve a bunch of your problems, besides, the site has a nice verified section and hash's similar to sig2dat (the idea of a verified hash anyway)

Q2c, not sure how to do that, I think you might be able to block user names, or block IP's, try the MXlinx program, I think it has that feature built in to block user names

GL, any more questions, just ask, somebody here will know I'm sure

Farangene -
I think Phalkon summed it all up OK here; I would add the following observations regarding leechers:

MXLinx is, I think, pretty reasonable at what it does. It's a young product, which is constantly being updated, and this seems to indicate a positive approach from Sharepoint. It has the potential to do all the things which WinMx should do automatically but doesn't. I don't understand all this stuff about hash links, but then I just want MP3s; I'm a simple soul. MXLinx can appear a bit harsh if you set the option to zap people not currently uploading, but I still set it when I'm away. It's a tough world.

As regards sending messages to leechers, I used to do that, with the intention of being polite and courteous, and gently pointing out to them the error of their ways. However, this is a complete waste of time, and brings you nothing but abuse or RSI. They're not worth it. They know the score, and choose not to abide by the P2P conventions, so that's their choice. My choice is to Ignore them. I've heard all the excuses; a few of the more popular ones :
Just reformatted my disk today - lost all my files (but managed to retain the client software....)
I'm at work - all my shares are at home (well, go home then....)
Frightened to let people DL from me 'cos I got a virus that way once (from letting files go out, but not from importing them?....)
I'm completely new to this (been online 5 hours, and responded immediately to the message....)
I'm at school/university, and they don't allow files to go out (Oh dear, how sad, goodbye...)
And so on, and so on, and so on.

Phalkon - I feel you are a little over-generous about the majority being uneducated. I reckon it is up to them to demonstrate that they are not leechers, not for me to prove they are. I prove my own credentials by sharing 2000+ files and running a queue of 5 -10 which is always full. (Oh, and fast users with a queue limit of 1 must often wonder why they wait hours in my queue, as everyone else passes them by!)

This is set up as a sharing community, not a charitable organisation. There are rules and customs and protocols to observe, and if you flout them, then you'll get burned. If you want to reap the benefits of the community, you have to learn the rules. Frontcode don't provide any rules, but it's no use bellyaching at them all the time; they provide a fantastic free product used by millions of people very successfully. If they choose to protect their own status by leaving its functionality undocumented, then so be it. Car manufacturers don't provide instructions on how to drive with each new vehicle - you're expected to go out there and learn to do it yourself.

So, Farangene, welcome aboard, and enjoy yourself. Your intentions sound honourable, and you'll be a benefit to the community. But don't be concerned about leechers - they're generally scum. Someone somewhere told them about the system, so they're not completely innocent or ignorant. If they're genuinely unknowledgable and wish to continue, they'll learn. like we all do. If not, they have no value and deserve no sympathy.

Be lucky!

yea, this aren't dumb questions.

to stop ppl from getting files immediately after you dc them:

when you 'whois' them, send them the msg, and then leave thee whois box open. press 'block' and then cancel their download. its only session wide, since winmx assigns diff numbers each time you start it, but hey? not a biggie.

good luck

>If I dont have time to send a msg

You can speed up send a message to leechs by writing a suitable
message once in notepad. Put you mouse over the first letter in the
message. Press and hold the left button. Move the mouse so all of
the message turns blue, release the mouse button.

When you want to send a message, go back to notepad, click
edit->copy, go to the message windows in winmx, right-click,
select paste. You pre-written message appears in the box.
You only have to type the message once.

I use mxlinx as well though I havn't tried the new version
that can send a message to leechers.

If someone downloads a file from me and it does not appear in their
list after I press refresh then they don't have their incoming
directory share. I ask them to share their incoming directory,
if they ignore me and arn't uploading then I click the ignore
button on the whois menu.

When you put someone on your ignore list they can't download
from you anymore, they stay in your ignore list even if you
close winmx.

In the new MXlinx, I think you can block the root of the name

So fore example, you see the name "SOBC_1232323", you can block "SOBC", and any variation of that will be blocked

Platinum, K++ does absolutely nothing for blocking leechers, while I agree it is a nice program for GETTING files, its not all that friendly for SHARING files

The only way to block leeches is to have someone keep a database of leech IPs and post the IPs on a site. I will guarantee that they will not be leeches for long. Having a dynamic IP will not help them if the database is continuously updated. Once enough people start blocking them they will either have to start sharing or give up downloading music.

Well I must admit that I am a bit taken back by seeing someone with 3 posts welcome another to Zero Paid.

However, This "think for yourself" no sympathy stance has a pleasant ring to the Krell.

Such a refreshing change from the other aromas 'round here recently.

agreed, Krell.
it's not that people don't have sympathy, it's just plain common sense and respect for what p2p is all about.

Okay ...here's maybe a dumb question. Even though I use the Secondary Connection ( due to the re-booting problem ) should I still go ahead and map my WinMx ports through my Linksey router ? Otherwords would it make a better difference ? .....thanks and y'all have a good day ...

Yes, you should, cause when you don't you are in "firewalled mode" , and two people in firewalled mode can't connect to each other, that means you can't download from someone in firewalled mode and someone in firewalled mode can't download from you.

Why not just install the proper drivers for linksys router?
