Ok, since Krell/123456789/few others started whipping up quick walk through's, I *figured what the hell I'll do one to help people out.

Links

RealAtLast (ALL the codecs and reg keys from Real...without having to install real! It's a tad old so some new content may not work, but I'm sure some can figure out how to recreate it with newer versions of Real...)

http://home.earthlink.net/~wophopo/realatlast.zip

IrfanView - will play Real Audio with the above codec installed.

http://www.irfanview.com/

Winamp plugin for TARA...(plays Real Audio and video files in Winamp. Some couldn't get Real At Last to work with it...you may have more luck.)

http://classic.winamp.com/plugins/detail.jhtml;$sessionid$J0NJDFZRLQOOS5YAAAARCYY?co mponentId=22143

With that you should be able to convert Real Audio to Mp3 or wav out in Winamp. Along with viewing Real streams without every having to infest your system with such trash. You can also use the TINRA program with it's GUI to rip to uncompressed AVI from real WITHOUT HAVING REAL INSTALLED. So it's good all round.

http://www.divx-digest.com/software/tinra.html

I'll skip doing a step by step seeing as most are smart enough to figure it out, but feel free to post if you need help.

Ciao

Edit: Fixed some of my atrocious spelling....lol I'm running on shit sleep and I have NO caffeine in the vicinity.....

Krell: I loathe it as well but hey some stuff is in rm format that I want so I gotta convert. Up until a few days ago I couldn't view it or convert it cuz I refused to install real trash.....lol

Shockwave fuckin' blows too....cept for INA releases..... "I didn't leave him milk an cookies...I left him weeeed" "The power of weeeeeeed" lmfao

I feel faint, I may pass out.

I LOATHE anything from Real. Personally, I am not interested in the media at all, and I live life fine with out it, sorta like FLASH, I hate that shit too.

This is a good post, thx for the input. Quick walk thoughts eh?

Good info. I think I only have one Real Audio file on my computer which I haven't found as a regular mp3/wav, so I may try it out.

As a side note, any recommendations for recording streaming audio to an mp3? There's an interview clip from a website I'd like to save, and I'm not sure of the best way to do it..

That's pretty useful stuff thanks. I don't think anyone hurries to install realplayer.

Quoted from the Tinra link:

"TINRA (That Is Not Real Anymore) is a RealVideo to AVI decoder. Although it has many limitations it's the only way I know to do this. The RealPlayer G2 has to be installed."

umm, whats the point of converting if you have to install that shit?

I agree w/ the Anti-Real posts, I don't think I've ever found anything I've wanted enough to install that crap for, and I don't think I will, their shit isnt special, there are always converted versions out there if you look hard enough, Realplayer = Poop, don't give in to their format

Ok, I do have a collection of episodes from a show that is encoded in Real Media. However I want to watch these without installing RealOne on my main computer (do have Real Player 8 Basic installed on the other computer). I tried this good tutorial and I can listen to the show, but apparently this Irfanview doesn't show Real Media clips. Is that the case or can I fiddle around with it more and make it do it?

Nice work CCSDUDE.. you were thinking along the same lines as me (*hint* lame moonman tutorial about something totally trivia to most 'netizens coming soon *hint*).

Good job man, I have ONE file in real format and I didn't want to install RealCrap and I didn't want to delete it.. so it was just sitting there.. now it has a purpose at least.

Irfanview only plays Real Audio, the TARA Winamp plugin should allow you to play Real Video once you copy RealAtLast's folder into the dir it tells you to and install the 3 reg keys. If TARA doesn't read the codec (it's been known to happen) then try searching for another media player that has Real support (they all use Real Players crap so every one of 'em requires you to have Real installed - RAL fixes that up and allows you to use any 3rd party program that plays 'em).

Phalkon: When you install RealAtLast you don't have to install any 'real" Real products cuz your just using reg keys and codec dll's from it.

Hope this helps, later.

I didn't install it yet, because to me it sounded like you had to install Real to get the proper stuff, I think I'll try it now, as I have a few movies like moonman has, just sitting there

I have another solution but I will need help because my p2p PC is down as it had to replace my homeserver that died after years of faithful service.

Someone called "norxh" from http://www.binnews.com uploaded this to the newsgroups (a.b.mulitmedia.utilities) that let you view the latest real media without installing realone or realplayer..

"Norxh" took the Media player classic from http://vobsub.edensrising.com

and extracted the needed real .dlls, codecs, etc from realplayer to make it work. This worked fine on my Win2K PC and stll works fine with XP now. Your milage may vary.

Now this total bundle is 11MBs in size

I'm not slapping on any P2P on my main PC and it'll be a week or two before I dig another P2P PC from my PC graveyard so I am humbly asking anybody who knows where I can upload this and that person can put it out on the P2P networks unless you all don't mind waiting for to get back online to P2P.

I don't know the person nor am I a member of Binnews but I give him/her credit for creating this or at least uploading it. His /her email address is at the bottom of the readme text.

Here is the readme file that comes with the files for your viewing pleasure:

{REAL MEDIA WITHOUT REAL PLAYER}

::What is this?
media player classic is a modified version of media player 6.4 (mplayer2)
by gabest (http://vobsub.edensrising.com/). it has a long list of wonderful
features. as you've probably guessed, the ability to play RealMedia files
is one of them. there is no install for it, and it doesnt not replace the
regular windows media player 6.4. you just run it.

the rest of the stuff in the package are just components to decode real
media. the reg file contains necessary registry entries for real media to
work properly.

::Will it work on Win9x?
i'm not sure. i dont have a win9x box and i'd be happy if i never see one
again :). youll need to goto gabest's homepage and download the win9x version
of mpc. as for the reg file, you can try using it, i doubt it will hurt
anything. but you may want to back up first.

::How do I install on Win2k/XP?
take the four files in the system32 directory and place them inside your
windows\system32 directory.

take the three folders in the real directory and put them inside a directory
called C:\program files\common files\real\ directory.

run the registry.reg file.

run mplayerc, goto options, click the tweaks tab, check allow realmedia, close
the program, and start it again.

now you can open all the latest real media files in mplayerc.

::How do i fix squished or stretched video?
right click, uncheck keep aspect ratio. resize the video, or go full screen.

::Why doesnt it work?
i dunno. i tried it on win2k and xp boxes. worked fine. you can use free tools
from sysinternals.com like process explorer, filemon, and regmon to examine what
is going on. thats what i did to get it working initially.

i had a friend test it, he confirmed its working, and he is going to make an
installer for me. i will keep you updated.

::What kind of performance should i get on RV9 files?
they play perfectly smooth on my win2k box, ati radeon, athlon xp1900+. mplayerc
uses about 8 or 9% of the proc when playing back 480x480 1200kbps files. my
cartoon encodes look like dvd rips on the tv out.

::Can i contact you?
yep. norxh@binnews.com
