This article is taken from Slyck.com from just a few minutes...it will give you a rough idea about Piolet (including how to pronounce it right) :)
It's a whole new ball game in the land of Blubster.
Every network has its share of challenges, whether confronted by the RIAA, or torn apart by internal struggles such as Gnutella. In either case, when the network's true strength is tested its longevity is determined by wheter it can withstand the pressure.
Largely unnoticed by the public, Optisoft, the owner of Blubster, has been subject to an array of circumstances that has forced major changes in this Spanish firm.
Optisoft's most notable change is the departure of its lead programmer, Pablo Soto. Looking to start fresh, Pablo has has regrouped and licensed his technology to a new project called "Piolet" (pronounced Pee-oh-lay.)
In addition, Blubster development under Optisoft has, for all practical purposes, ceased. If you're looking for the next beta release, it may never exist. Future development of the now Piolet network will continue under Pablo's new venture. If Optisoft does want to deploy an upgraded version of Blubster, it would have to purchase the licensing rights from Piolet (similar to how Grokster purchases FastTrack technology from Sharman.) However, the fate of Blubster/Optisoft remains to be seen, as it is questioned whether they can now survive. Pablo commented on the issue, "I'm really not sure what will happen to Blubster, but Piolet is here to stay."
At first glance, Piolet simply looks like a Blubster clone with different colors plastered on. Nothing can be further from the truth. Piolet 1.0 beta 3 is what the official Blubster 2.0 was supposed to be. With this release, virtually every problem associated with the old Blubster beta's have been eliminated. The Windows XP compatibility issue has been resolved, and you'll find this version now runs smoothly on all operating systems. Months of private beta testing with members of the P2PChat.org IRC network has proved invaluable, as wide resource of knowledgeable P2P users were able to work out the remaining kinks.
One of the more interesting additions is the weblinks feature (similar to eDonkey/Overnet.) Now, like eDonkey, individuals can create weblinks for Piolet (could a Sharereactor for Blubster now be in the works?)
"This client is superior in every way," says Pablo, "...the network and the core protocol daemon is much better...basically, less resources with more results."
Has the Blubster network hit a few bumps in the road? Sure, but development has been surging ahead at a furious rate. Although this is a time of transition, the Blubster network, now the Piolet network, is emerging in an advantageous situation. With a new version and new look, Piolet is more than capable of taking over where Blubster left off and leading this network to new hieghts in the P2P world.

I'll try it and hope its not as buggy as Blubster 2.0 was.

Got another question. Can the Internal Media player be disabled so I can play MP3s with my default player? Or can I select that option in the program? My sound card does not support multiple streams and when using Blubster, as long as the program is open, I cannot use any other player to play my MP3s.

I don't think you'll have trouble playing mp3s with an external player as long as you don't play any with the internal player, but correct me if I'm wrong.

does this connect to the same community as Blubster or it starts a new one?

Yes, it connects to the old blubster.net so there are still many users online.

Couldn't connect to Blubster. Can't connect to Piolet. I'm just curious....why is it the only community that I and thousands of other people can't connect too? What are they doing wrong?

OK - Finally !!! It works on my machine !!! Seems pretty damn good so far. I'm not having the problems I had with Blubster 2.0.
Good Job Pablo !!
The song scanner was slow as hell but nothing to really bitch about.

method, it doesnt allow UDP connection...you are probably behind a firewall or router...
check out http://forums.blubster.net/ to see how to configure it
or check out #piolet_help on irc.p2pchat.org for irc help.

Using MD5 hashing was a mistake, IMO. SHA1 is the standard these days, and it would allow compatibility with other weblinks (ed2k, gnutella & magnet.)

Actually, as soon as I start blubster, I cannot use any external players(i'm going by last version not new piolet 1.03). It claims the sound card and no other external players can use it(unless you have a sound card that supports multiple streams).

I really like Piolet it's almost like Napster and it has a great interface etc etc.
But ONE THING it doesn't have enough users to actually see the full potential.
Hope it can get more users, then it'll be perfect.

How do I connect to the piolet chat with MIRC?
MikeHunt
January 7th, 2003, 12:34 PM
Excellent ...stable ...fast ..VERY FAST! ...supports ogg too.
small problem...how do you cancel uploads in progress( very slow speeds..leeches..etc)?? ....there seems to be no way to do so..help!:hole
g0b
January 7th, 2003, 02:55 PM
Uploads cant be cancelled...some people consider this good and other consider it bad...it has pros and cons, but it was taken out to stop leechers. Its a pain in the ass though when a slow connection is downloading off you, but its more fair this way...it gives dial-up users a chance to get songs without being cancelled all the time.

Once Piolet gets the connection issues resolved it will be great becasue there are loads of people who want to connect but cant.

the alexa thing is something that is installed with internet explorer. simply run ad-aware/spybot and delete the reg key whenever you install or update ie

I'm guessing this program has got to connect to the Blubster server thing unless someone can explain it to me. When people are uploading songs from my, i right click on them to chat with them, and on some of the peoples s/n's it says like "
[email protected]" or I've some like "
[email protected]" so how are we seeing blubster users on this piolet program? these programs have to connect to each other in some way!!!! please post if anyone else notices this!!!

Huh? I noticed that when I ran spybot. Now I know where it came from.
oh well. still no significant search results. still not able to search for albums or within folder names. no communities / groups.
yeah, I had one albumwrap download go up and down in speed and then disconnect, but I'll give it another chance . Still no Soulseek or DC++.

January 7th, 2003, 05:51 PM
@G0b...how does the preventing of cancelling uploads stop leaching? ..A leech (with a 14.4 modem)could theoretically download off of you all day ...you can't cancel 'em...and when you check their library..there is nothing there....hmmm.
... Also, when I am going to go off line soon ...I try to stop any new uploads so I don't cut people off in mid-transfer.
It's really stoopid not to have this option.
Is it Piolet's desire to become the 56k crowds mecca??
g0b
January 7th, 2003, 05:54 PM
MikeHunt, I'm not sure what Pablo's reason for taking away that option was rather than that. Other networks such as eDonkey do the same thing. This way everybody can get the file. I know it sucks when dial up users are getting a file, but it works well with high speed users.

Yes, Blubster and Piolet all work together. They all use the same posts so they connect together.

why does it suck when dialup users download from you?
all i can see is that this would be good. less upload saturation means you can still use your connection while sharing

Updates will be more frequent now, so many of the things mentioned in this thread will be changed/included. The goal of this version was to fix as many bugs as possible, and to make the client stable.

all of this really sounds great. But the thing I care about most is the ability for the client to remember songs so that u can find them and have them downloaded when someone comes online. This is what audiogalaxy did. It's a great feature and should be implemented. Is it?
Ken17625
January 7th, 2003, 10:00 PM
it was taken out to stop leechers
Taking out the ability to cancel uploads will obviously not stop leechers. Leechers(by definition) have no files. A leecher will not cancel your upload. Why? Because leechers don't share files for people to download. You can't download from someone who has no files(exception: partial file sharing, or downloading from a user who is still downloading a particular file).

WOW! 35min and still not even connected. I would blame my firewall, but I just updated the firmware and since then I've been able to download faster on all p2p clients.

the router block the ports piolet, like blubster, needs to operate.
YOU Must open ports 41170-41350 UDP.
Arriving in the dmz zone of the router settings.

This network will never be the biggest! Most people don't know / want or have the option to configure their router / firewall for a p2p app. And piolet is still based on one udp port which means one client per IP! Scalable yeah right! Don't even use the word "3rd generation" for that!
"By taking into account both the Gnutella v0.4 and UDP protocols"...... (http://www.piolet.com/protocol.html)
Gnutella v0.4 wasn't scalable -> piolet / blubster isn't!
Just don't believe the hype because these are just the facts!

I like the Piolet setup. It's just that, on my old-ass PC (PII 300mhz, 96 Meg Ram - recently defragged and not a lot of shit running in the background), it runs like molasses, and I don't know why.
If I could run it well, I'm sure it would become a favorite of mine.
The only other thing I'll comment on is this:
Everyone says this is the most Napsterlike app.
The one thing Piolet does not have (which I've never seen any P2P app have since Nap, save WinMX) is software-based chat, as opposed to web-based chat.
If Piolet could develop a software-based chat system, it would be the most popular P2P app by the end of the year.
