Hi
I'm a new comer to the P2P world and I just downloaded WIN MX.
While I was setting up, I got this message saying

"in:cross WinMX is uable to receive TCP connections from the internet"

It does mention that the TCP connection is not required. But I don't understand why. I'm using DSL under WIN XP PRO. Does that mean that I'll get the information using dial up speed?

How is everyone handlng this?
Will TCP connections make my system more vulnerable?

What do you recommend? Is it better for me to configure my system to use the TCP connection? If so, how do I do that?

ANY comment would be GREATLY APPREICATED
Thank you so much

are you running a firewall?
part of a network?
otherwise behind a router?

I think one of these is likely to be your problem.... maybe the fiewall built into XP itself.... which, btw, I do not know how to configure or turn off. but if that is the problem I am very sure someone else will come along and help you with it soon.

Yes I have firwall activated
I know how to turn it off, but, is it necessary in order to receive TCP connection?
What if I get like virus in any file?
How is everyone dealing with security issue?
I just downloaded Ad-Aware an hour ago and found like 19 infected files on my system, it was a shock

Actually I downloaded MX yesterday, and tried it without the TCP connection. But I was kind of confused.

This is what happened. I searched for some movies and found them. The downloaded took like more than two hours (waiting time). After I downloaded it, it wasn't the movie I reguested at all. It has the same name, but it requested the internet connection and after I connected to the internet, it took me to a ADULT SITE. I was so shocked and deleted the file right away

Has anyone have this kind of experience?
It was my first day and I got REALLY disappointed
But I searched for the site and found some good review and decided to give MX another try.

Any comment?

Yes, who are you ? You dont sound "newbie" enough.

Also, are you on a college campus? Who provides your DSL service?

Try http://winmxinfo.cjb.net/ , it should have all the help you could ever need for winmx, including how to breach a firewall safely to use the UDP and TCP ports

As for the movie, its very common, renamed files are a huge problem, and I have a question for you, what was the file extension? sometimes code can be embeded into movies, I've had that on kazaa before

If you want a verified movie for WinMX, I suggest you check out http://www.sharepoint.boo.pl/ , get the MLinx program, and then find a verified download, its simple and gives good results

:;) Hi Krell, nice to meet you
"Yes, who are you ? You dont sound "newbie" enough. "
I've been using PC for quite a while but I just got to know about P2P two days ago. I posted a message at pcmagazine.com for advice on how to choose a safe movie download site 'cause I came across some sites offering for like 99 cents a month for unlimited full-length movie download and that really got me interested. But the concern I had was that there was no company info at all and the navigation bar doesn't work. All the link worked would take me to the payment page. I still don't know whether they're credible but I got to know more about p2p and found it very interesting. Then I got to know more about spyware after reading some articles about p2p.

To answer your another question, no, I'm not on a college campus. My DSL provider is Yahoo.

To phalkon30:heart
Thank you so much for the link. I just realized that it actually was the site where I downloaded WIN MX. Stupid me that didn't go back there for more info. Another web site is a bless, too.
I've got a lot to read now, If I have more questions, I'll come back

Thank you all for the help

Its a good thing you didn't do the pay version of P2P, if you want some more info on that scam, check out our news section ( http://zeropaid.com/news/articles/auto/01052003a.php ), you should never ever ever have to pay for a P2P app, if you want some more scam info, check out this thread ( http://zeropaid.com/bbs/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2801&highlight=kazaa+gold ), its hillarious that somebody would actually for for that crap, glad you're smart enough to turn it down

I just had to comment on that, being you have a young and impressionable mind when it comes to file sharing :)

Come back for questions, I would be happy to help you with other things, and I'm sure most of the other members would be to, welcome to ZP and enjoy your stay

dude dont use winmx or kazaa for moviez, generally they are bad quality and or blanks or duds, use the irc networks and if u dont wanna get into that, just download bottler (3.0.0 is out, props to david, the creator) at http://memelog.bottler.com i think or just go to memelog.com and choose bottler----------irc networks has 99.9999% reliability and usually xtremly high quality things, jus dont use if u want infidual mp3z, they usually have full length albums

Don't listen to this guy, he has no clue what he is talking about. Do yourself a favor pumpkin and test the water a bit with p2p apps. KaZaA Lite isn't everyones cup of tea, nor is Winmx.. but both are outstanding apps and worth a shot. Another good choice for movies (or so I've been told...) is Emule. Search the site for more info on it, it is worthly enough to take some time and check it out.

As for chipperrox, I was kind of hoping he would get a Krell smack down... but that's just me. :devil

Again, go to http://winmxinfo.cjb.net/ , they have tutorials on how to fix your router problem, they have one for almost any name brand router you can buy, and some non-name brand routers

chipperrox, if the question had been gathering ideas for a good P2P program, I might have accepted your comment, BUT, she simply asked a simple question about WinMX, sure, I could have responded "WiNmX sUx!", but that wasn't the answer she wanted, WinMX is a great program if you have the proper tools, so is kazaa

Using the Verified links at sharepoint, you can find great quality movies that have been tested and work well, winmx is a very fast program for finding these and is generally less confusing than most other clients (this goes for K-lite with sig2dat links)

Please, try and think before posting next time

That's your problem. If you can't handle adult content, then how can you handle WinMX and the internet?

When used properly, the internet and file sharing should never give you "shocking" results, you just have to look closely, and like I've said before, use some tools available to you

:green5I don't really agree. And it's not that I can't handle adult content, I was just surprised because it was not what I expected. It was my first day using WinMX and I think being surprised at things like this wasn't in anyway wrong. Now I know there are people who rename files, got some advices from some nice people here, and I'm really to move on. I'm not saying it's anyone's problem, but I certainly don't think that it's MY problem. I don't understand why you would say that.

Now I think I got what Kerll meant. You were so right.

To phalkon30:
:tilted Hi, you know, I tried MX and got to talk to people in the chat room and learned a lot from them. Some of them were really nice and offered to share files with me. Some started transfer for me right away even though I was like number sixty something in the Q line. But this is the thing, still, it took me SO LONG to download one thing. It took more than five hours for one movie file, and you know what, it's still not completed.

I'm using DSL and already configured the firewall setting, thanks to your link, I got the instruction there. But is it normal?
How long does it usually take people to download one movie file? (not including the waiting time)

Also, I went to Sharepoint, the website you told me. At the front page, it said that I could find MXlink at the download section, but I coudln't find a link to the download page. I thought at first maybe it was because my user status, so I tried to register as a user, but got ERROR messages so many times. I wasn't able to register and wasn't able to post this question in their forum 'cause of my "invalid user status"

Any idea why this is happening?
What am I missing?

Also, what is the fastst p2p appt? The slow download just gives me headache.

Any comment would be greatly appreciated
Thank you

This could be quite a long post....lol, glad to see you still want to continue with this, most people get discouraged by now, sorry if I answer out of order, its just my thought process

I have very fast cable, yet it will sometimes take me over a week to download, if you could get a decent video in only a couple of hours, you are doing AWESOME, lets put it this way, you could have a T1 line (VERY VERY VERY fast internet, over 3 times what I'm guessing you have), and if the file were being uploaded at a slow rate, there's nothing you can do, the persons upload speed ultimately is the deciding factor for speed

One other thing you may want to try, I assume you are now on a primary connection, what this does, is take some bandwidth in the background (you can look at the transfers window to see how much), it uses it for other users searching, and several other network maintenence features (I'm no expert when it comes to this area of the network, perhaps somebody else could help you there), anyway, if you go to the settings tab on top, then to the WinMX Peer Network tab, there should be a setting for allocated bandwidth, make this as low as possible, that should free up some bandwidth for you, although I doubt it will help significantly

Sharing files is a great way to get placed higher in queue lines, and trading works well also, if you need some content to share, get a program called Cdex ( http://www.cdex.n3.net/ ), and get version 1.5, beta 9, then rip some cds of yours, preferably at 192k or higher with the lame codec, and share those, the more popular, the more chance of somebody bumping you up in queues, also, by doing this, you will help give back to the community by sharing files

I have some very bad news about Mxlinx, it seems as of today, the admin on the site are going to discontinue development, that didnt sound too bad at first, but after some more research, it has been completely removed from the site!! I unfortunately got rid of the installer when I put it in yesterday, so I don't have a copy handy :( I have sent the developer an email about the subject, I hope he can put up the download manager part of it at very least (until then, can anybody email it to me? PM me if you have the file)

Go to http://www.sharepoint.boo.pl/modules.php?name=Reviews to get a verified movie listing for WinMX, from there, just copy the hash mark into the bottom search box, and you should get some results (its just not automated like MXlinx was)

If you are looking for a faster download, try using a program called K++ 2.02, this is a hacked copy of Kazaa, and kazaa lite (which you no doubt have heard of), get a copy at www.k-lite.tk , it should be on the mainpage, or downloads section

Kazaa has right now by far the largest file database, and its verified files are very plentiful, its also a great App for beginers to P2P like yourself

I posted some great links to verified files on the kazaa network here (http://zeropaid.com/bbs/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5735&highlight=sig2dat) , remember that verified files are files that have been downloaded by several users that have confirmed they are not fake files, make sure to install the sig2dat tool that comes bundled with K++, actually, all the files that come with K++ are good to install (the host file is something you may not want to, read more about "supretrick" at www.k-lite.tk under the downloads area)

Sorry for the essay explenation there....just sorta got into it when I started typing, hope you figure out what you want to do

After you do get a movie downloaded, then we're going to have to talk about how to play them correctly, and what codecs you will need, but that will come much later (basicly I dont want to confuse you anymore now, and my hands hurt from over a half hour of searching and typing)

:) have a nice day
