You guys helped me out on my HD radio, I thought I'd get your thoughts on HD receivers. I'm looking to spend in the $250-$500 range.
My old receiver doesn't do HDMI so my XBOX and DVD's lack surround sound. I already have very good speakers so all I need is the receiver.
I've read tons of reviews but they all just blend together.

I like Yamaha digital receivers, I have two one for the master bedroom & one for living room.

My only recommendation is to stay away from Sony, they have a weird sound to them IMO. Mind you maybe their high end system are better, but really, they always seemed to pale in comparison to their similarly priced competition.

I have been a Bose man since they first hit the streets years ago. Their HD products are just as good as the original systems.

They have issues at low volumes, at least the systems I've heard. Personally I would go Yamaha, Harman Kardon, Onkyo, or Denon.

I'm partial to Harman/Kardon. They make excellent (but finicky) high end equipment. Check ebay. They have a refurb store. You can find very good deals there. I would also recommend you check out the Yamaha RX-V765 it has HD audio and loads of HDMI options. An audiophile friend has 2 of these and swears by them.

H/K w/ some JBL speakers... mmmmmmmmmmm....
You can go the audiophile route about brands, etc., or you can just be dang sure that whatever you do buy has the inputs/outputs you require, and rates decently.
Nothing will ever beat my JVC reciever from the 1970's that I rescued from a Good Will. 16 speaker channels, quadrophonic sound, and a metric shit-ton of power.
I love that 80lb lug...

Go to dealnews.com
watch it for the next couple of weeks
When you see any name brand system marked down significantly that falls within your price range, buy it.
Settled.
Yea . . I wish I still had my 80 lugs

Those are some damn good prices. Thanks. Do you have to be careful who you purchase from? It linked to http://www.electronics-expo.com/ which I've never heard of.
Seems like a lot of votes for Yamaha. My current system is a Yamaha htr 5640 which still works great but technology has passed it by. No HDMI.
El Comandante recommends the Yamaha RX-V765 and looking at the specs I tend to agree.
Krell's link has the Yamaha RX-V765 at $358 which seems almost to good to be true but it looks legit.

I'll make my decision by this weekend. Today's my birthday so I have excuse to justify buying something cool. $400 isn't too bad, probably won't get in too much trouble.

I also had a similar Fisher receiver that I took off the top of a trash can. It had a fader/balance control that was a joystick.
I let a friend use it because I had my JVC (this was back in high school) and he let someone else use it, who was a junkie. The junkie passed it around, it ended up in the possession of my sister-in-law's junkie brother-in-law.
Funny shit. I should have got it back from him. It was a bit touchy, but every bit as good as my JVC. The JVC is being held in trust by my Father-in-law for now...

Electronics expo is legit, they have storefronts in the NYC metro area, I've been to them. Sometimes they have good deals.
