whew... i gotta thank you guys. i had/have a movie (ecks vs sever) and its encoded in xvid. whenever i tried playing it, it would be smeary as hell. but i wasnt going to ask right away, since i can usually find things myself. i remembered somone with a similar problem, and you gave the same answer. the thing is, instead of ffdshow, i got dspshow. (close enough so that i wouldnt notice the difference) and it didnt work. i had given up and put the movie in my recycle bin, but for some reason i didnt delete it. then after an hour or 2, i came across this thread. i dled ffdshow, and voila! no more flippin smearing. again, thank you.

The link he provides lets you download the Direct Show filters in addition to what you installed with Nimo.

The link I addes tells you how to configure the filter, if an Xvid still doesnt play for you, or if the video is messed up.

Ive tried them all, for years, and I have my favorites. Other people like some that I dont.

I use Zoom Player, I like the configuration options, and, IT WORKS.

Keep WMP, there will times when it will do a better job on MPG4 material. Winamp, well, it has its advantages,
when it works right on your system.

The problem with trying ot ALL these players is the rights issues. WHO is the default for WHAT file extention?

It gets mussed up. Therefore I do not endorse installing MORE players to compensate for codec issues.

Generally, keep it clean, keep it simple. Go slow, be methodical.

cheers
