I have this insane problem with WinMX 3.3.1. I'm on Secondary connection, 512K ADSL, Asian Server. My download speeds are insanely slow, between 0.1k - 2.0 k. It really frustrates me, when I trade with people they get their files and I always get mine halfway. :cross What could be the problem?

I 've tried using bandwidth throttle, limiting incoming bw to 64000 and outgoing bw to 13000, but that doesn't help. Anyone can help me? Any help is apprecaited, many thanx!

Hello tzek_99,

it is late in the USA, where many of our members live, so it may be a few hours before you get a better response than I am prepared to give you. Albeit, we have talented members worldwide. Someone, in some time zone, knows the answer to your question.

I want to start out by asking you to provide a bit more info for us. Primarily, are you behind a firewall, or do you use a firewall on your pc?

Do you use any other file sharing utilities?

What O/S are you using? Have you ever had proper results using Winmx on your pc, and has anything changed recently?

Do you know of anyone that uses your broadband provider, that is successfully downloading at good speeds?

You will greatly expedite your answer by providing us with this info, as it will surely be asked of you. Thx, best wishes.

Hi, thanx for the reply.
I am using Windows XP. I'm not behind a firewall.
I reinstalled WinMX for fear the slow speeds might be due to some software error therefore everything's new.

I use mIRC and Kazaa too, but I turn Kazaa off when I use WinMX. I have pretty good download speeds in Kazaa. I'm using Singnet Broadband 512K, a local ISP and no I do not know anyone else who uses my type of connection who uses WinMX. I haven't had decent speeds with WinMX before. Thanx :tilted

The DL-speed depends on the settings of the person who you are DL from.
I am actually DL now a file now from a T1-connection at 1,5 Kb/s.
I have a 1024/128 cable connection.
So, theoretically, i can DL from a T1-connection at max 128 Kb/s, but mostly it won't do that.

Cable/ADSL users has a limited UL bandwidth of max 16Kb/s.
All DL from them will be divided over that bandwidth. F.i.: 4 simultanious DL will get 4Kb/s max.
And that will be your DL-speed.

I even had a DL from a person who had 100 upload-slots available on a DSL-line. My DL-speed was at 0,01 Kb/s!

Although, by "multi-source" downloading (DL the same file frome more than 1 user at the same time) you can get (very) high DL-speeds, up to the maximum of your IP-connection.

I myself get sometimes DL-speeds then of 120 Kb/s.

So, as you can see, the DL-speed dramatically depends on what you are DL and from who.

And for a good comparison between WinMX and Kazaa you must DL the SAME file from the SAME user at the SAME time.
Personally i think that you don't see a difference then: It's all Peer To Peer sharing!

P.S. I am using WinMX 3.31 on Windows XP behind a firewalled/router.

Happy sharing you all! :shy

I apologize that no one helped out before now. The Winmx forum is a tender subject these days, but I will try to work on that.

Based on what you provided, I would say, go back to the drawing board, use a secondary connection, find a very popular file, and when you download it, select the multi-source option.

Also set it to Find Resources, or right click and do that. If you have 15 or more people, all high queues, lose all but the first 10, search for more resources.

Choose files that are large, not an mp3. Watch and see of indeed you will ever achieve higher rates that way. On the flip side, I also have multi-source downloads that are still very very slow. It's shameful. It's a game of chance, you never know when one will ZOOM right along when you get a user with bandwidth.

Stay with the default settings, give it another week.

cheers

i find my upload speeds are slow on a primary connection, but alot faster on a secondry, but still slower than kazaa.
allso winmx kicks hell outa my processer and after a few hours zonealarm uses up 99% of my processer power, i turn it off and rely on blackice defender pro.

Don`t forget, the isp may be limiting the default ports, I changed my port #s with much better results.

Since you did not state whether you are using KaZaA or KaZaA Light I suggest you download SpyBot Search & Destroy from

Clean you system and get rid of the excess baggage that KaZaA comes with and your performance may improve.
