I've seen Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking barrels on video, but it was with friends who talked through most of the movie and with such heavy English accents I couldn't follow along real well, so I don't remember it.

It's been a while since I saw Love and a .45. What I remember
is it's "kinda similar" to Natural Born Killers. It's similiar enough to make you think that the guy responsible for Natural Born Killers saw it and was "inspired" by it.

Just as an FYI: Natural Born Killers was directed by Oliver Stone, based on a story by Quentin Tarantino. . . which explains why it's such a cool f**king flick.
Interestingly, both "Love and a .45" and "Natural Born Killers" came out in the same year. . . 1994. NBK was in theaters in August, Love in November. So, any influence each film may have had upon the other seems unlikely.

Those are really good movies ( not the average kind of movies ). That style of cinema started from Tarantino and Oliver Stone and it's my favorite kind. Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking barrels is one of my favorite movies of all times, made by Guy Ricci (Madonna's boyfriend ) but my favorite Gut Ricci movie is "The Snatch"! Really fucked up humor but I don't know if the americans are gonna like it because they are used of listening to americans talking and the others just make them laugh! Also watch "trainspotting".

I love the film Amelie (although the French title is so much more fun... I believe that it is literally translated as "The Fabulous Destiny of Amelie Poulain") Truly a beautiful film to view and it is fun as well.
Faer and Loathing is so similar to the book that it is difficult to see how they are any different. It really gets that HST vibe--you feel the progression of his increasingly frenzied viewpoint through his poorly planned paranoid travels (you don't slow down for a state trooper--make him chase you--he will respect you).
I didn't like Brazil... I thought that it was slow and really tried to show the world of 1984, but left out what was so goddamed cool about that book (Room 101 still gives me the chills). Terry Gilliam has done some other fantastic films though (I think he directed Fear and Loathing as a matter of fact).
I liked the way that Lock, Stock and 2 smoking barrels was filmed, but I have a hard time with that thick British accent (I should have turned on the subtitles).
Krell--since you live near Seattle, I would suggest that you go to Scarecrow Video and rent Battle Royale--it is one strange film about Japanese school children forced to fight each other to the death on an island to end wars (it is from some banned Japanese book and rated NC-17)
Has anyone seen Dead Alive by Peter Jackson? That is one of the funniest horror films I have ever seen (entrails attacking people--brilliant).
I have been renting older movies as of late since the quality of recent flicks has dropped quite a bit (one word--Goldmember).
Well, I had better stop procrastinating and finish my chem pre-lab and my math...

I dunno if it fits the topic exactly, but has anyone seen Memento? It's an indie flick that came out in 2000; it got alot of critic acclaim but not much popularity.
Regardless, it's one of the most psychologically intense movies I've ever seen. . . the basic premise is about a man who, due to a brain injury from a violent assault, loses all of his ability to create new memories.
Because of this, he is forced to live his life in short, 10-minute bursts of time, and must write notes to himself so he can remember what is going on. All of this, while he tries to avenge his wife's death by tracking down the man who murdered her.
Very powerful, very disorienting, and very thought-provoking. If you like movies that make you think, this'll have you scratching your head for days afterwards!

ring 0, the prequel to the other 2 films is a right headfuck.
Sexy Beast is good if you want to watch Gandi scream the c word 20 times in 60 seconds. They Live, classic.
otherwise i can get into anything from the 70's that involves violent creatures being flushed down toilets, encountering chemical waste, then returning

Audition - English Subtitles
The final act contains images so disturbing that they may permanently etched in the viewer's brain. The events of Audition have the ability to make the viewer feel uncomfortable and even filthy. If you feel like you need a shower after watching this excellent thriller, don't say you weren't warned http://www.lovehkfilm.com/panasia/audition.htm
.
Avalon
Avalon is something that's hard to digest at first, but it confirms Oshii as something more than just an Anime director. He clearly wanted to separate himself from the belief that Anime is something for only kids or fanatics. If Ghost In The Shell wasn't enough to make you believe there can be Anime arthouse films, Avalon will certainly do the job. http://www.lovehkfilm.com/panasia/avalon.htm
.
Battle Royale English Subtitles
This is clearly more of a director's film than an actor-driven one, but many of the teenagers offer solid performances, even when their characters ask for emotional restraint. Takeshi Kitano is magnificent as usual, and Masanobu Ando is fine as the psychotic outsider who never speaks. The film has a brilliant soundtrack as well, using famous classical pieces that evoke the work of John Woo and even Stanley Kubrick. And while the violence is certainly graphic and shocking, it feels right given the circumstances http://www.lovehkfilm.com/panasia/battle_royale.htm
.
Ichi the Killer
Were you asking yourself what Takashi Miike would do next after Visitor Q? Well, this is your answer. And - ready or not - it means more blood-spilling, nipple & tongue-slicing, oil-pouring, face-ripping insanity from the cult director. Whether or not that makes for compelling cinema is up to you. Miike's ode to S&M is definitely not for the easily insulted and/or disgusted http://www.lovehkfilm.com/panasia/ichi_the_killer.htm
.
Ring - Ringu
Everything is slightly askew in Ring and that's one reason why it works. http://www.lovehkfilm.com/panasia/ring.htm
.
Ring 2
Logistics aside, the film successfully manages to recreate the creepy atmosphere of its predecessor, though it lacks the overall tension and effective climax
http://www.lovehkfilm.com/panasia/ring_2.htm
.
Spirited Away - Sen To Chihiro No Kamikakushi
One of the best films Studio Ghibli has ever produced (and the highest grossing Japanese film of all time). After the slightly disappointing Princess Mononoke, Miyazaki returns with this terrific work that seamlessly mixes twenty years of great technical innovation, charming characters and weird plot developments. Anime at its best. http://www.lovehkfilm.com/panasia/spirited_away.htm
.
Wasabi
Thankfully, Jean Reno makes this mindless fluff watchable and entertaining. The actor, whose popularity in Japan probably precipitated this film, possesses great screen presence as well as remarkable comic instinct. His chemistry with Japanese idol Ryoko Hirosue (who turns in a charming, if not-too-hyper performance) is remarkably real and winning, which is great because that relationship is the central hook of the film. http://www.lovehkfilm.com/panasia/wasabi.htm

I went and saw "Spirited Away" in all of its dubbed glory when it was released stateside about 4 months ago. It was truly fantastic. Some day anime is going to break through in America. The Studio Ghibli films being released and dubbed by Disney is actually a pretty good fit and makes it far more accessible to the American public that was not raised on anime (as were todays youths). Although I would have preferred subtitles, the voice acting was excellent. Miyazaki is a genius. His animation is so organic; the characters and beasts seem alive.
Unfortunately, not much anime is released in theaters, so people cannot feel the full impact of the works as they were intended. Imagine seeing Ghost in the Shell or Akira at a large format theater such as a Cinerama... that would be a perfect fit.
BTW, Battle Royale 2 is going to be released in Japan soon, I saw that there was a trailer online, but I did not watch it as I am on crappy dial-up.
I love Japanese cinema, but unfortunately little or none of it is released theatrically. European and Middle-Eastern films are released in arthouses, but little or no Japanese cinema makes it there (with the notable exception of the Kurosawa film festival a few months ago at Landmark theaters). I would love to see BR2 in a movie theater, instead of waiting until Scarecrow has an imported copy.

Ringu was pretty good...Washabi was more of a 'eh' title IMHO.
Only thing that saved it was Ryoko Hirosue bouncing around like a hyper spastic school girl, action was decent too....other then that I couldn't stand Jean's sidekick....or the DDR scene.....
For some reason seeing 2 old ass French guys try to DDR their asses off isn't pleasing to the eye....
BR was pretty good.....the opening freaked me the hell out....
A word of advice....watch BR whilst high....the chick winner from the previous year will spook the crap outta ya....
*She's covered in blood and grinning/smiling this evil demonic smile all while giving off that innocent school girl charm*
http://homepage.eircom.net/~screamanthology/br/moviestills/br031.jpg
Good picks....I'd also recommend the odd movie.... "Metropolis". Basically it's a anime version of Fritz Langs classical work....done up in the classic "Astro Boy" style with killer detailed backgrounds and some nice classic 30's-40's jazz done by a pretty good Japanese quartette. All in all the plot is kinda weak, but the style and sheer volume of work put into it show and give you a bit of eye candy.

Smart, sexy, awesome soundstage.
Jin-Roh (The Wolf Brigade)
Based on the story and screenplay by Mamoru Oshii (whose Ghost in the Shell anime is legendary), and Directed by Hiroyuki Okiura, Jin-Roh plays very much like a live action drama. Produced by Production I.G. Animation Studios (who also created the anime Patlabor), this spectacular movie was three years in the making, and for sheer realism and hard hitting story telling it's difficult to beat. http://www.theblackmoon.com/Watching/jinro.htm

The first 30 or so minutes of the movie is good, but that's about it. The ending is lame.
Herzog, Bergman, Kirosawa, are great directors. I'm not that interested in shock films anymore, I got over that phase in high school.
