Cashstrapped Wikileaks goes into hibernation

"To concentrate on raising the funds necessary to keep us alive into 2010, we have reluctantly suspended all other operations, but will be back soon."

Wikileaks has temporarily shut operations due a lack of donations. they say "Nor can we accept government or corporate funding and maintain our absolute integrity." pity, since that's probably the only way they can stay afloat. $600,000 a year don't normally fall from the sky.

noted journalist Paul Lashmar said it best; "(Web) users aren't interested in how the people behind sites make their money,"..."At some point people who care about free speech will realise that free speech has to be funded, otherwise it's not free."

That's actually sad. It was pretty much one of the beacons of free speech. Hopefully someone managed to mirror the content somewhere where it's still active.

Too bad there isn't some rich philanthropist willing to donate cash not attached to a company. Wish I had the cash to fund it. One option however would to have universities host the content, or even libraries. Not sure if they would be willing, but it may be worth a try.
