I recently did a restore on a computer over the holidays and I ran into a problem. Everything went without a hitch except for the cd-rw. it is rated as 8x4x32, but will only burn discs at 4x speed. Does anyone know what would cause this? the make of the cd-rw is a liteon. thanks in advance for any advice.

Gotta few questions before any of us diagnose yer problem.
1) When you reinstalled/restored did you set the temp file for whatever burning program you use to a different dir?
2) Are you burning off a second HD?
3) Does the 8x option show up? Or is it maxed at 4x?
Post on it and we'll see what we can do.

Temp file is defualt that it goes to when installed.
there is only one hard drive in the comp. a 40 gig one
All options show up......but when burning on anything higher than 4 either it crashes(ez cd) or I get a power calabration error(nero)!
hope that helps

Well, I had this problem with my 8x4x32 ish burner, it was a philips, I used clone cd 3.x with it, and there was this nifty laser calibration option....gone now, but I wonder if it could somehow help, although I honestly have no clue what the hell it did, it did help

Hmmmm....sounds fishy
I'd say (this is just a flat out guess lol) that....
A) The connections too the burner are a bit off.....kind of a long shot. But it's always good to make sure all the cables are plugged in fully.
B) The actual track that your CDRW's laser is on is a tad worn.
C) It could be your CD burning software. Try something like Fire burner and see if you get similar results.

Go to Device manager
Look at the Disc Controllers, and enable DMA on each drive.
Reboot.
