Uh, what? After reading that, I'm still scratching my noggin trying to figure out what makes Barack Obama deserving of this honor. He won a Nobel Peace Prize for, "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples"? Is what you call doing speeches across Europe talking about how wonderful you are while you put down your own country?
Even Jimmy Carter, who was a fairly pathetic recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, once played a big role in engineering a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. In Obama's case, his efforts on the international stage have amounted to zilch. There are simply no accomplishments whatsoever to point at.
Of course, after terrorists like Yasser Arafat and frauds like Al Gore have won the award, we should be happy that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad isn't being given a Nobel Peace Prize for Holocaust Denial. Compared to that, even Barack Obama basically being given the award for existing isn't so bad.

It's unfair that the only Republican ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize was Martin Luther King Jr.:bigok::laugh2:

Even Obama was scratching his head at the award, wonder if they are regretting their decision.

As much as I like Obama as the president. As much as I approve of his methodical style. As much as am inspired by his efforts at cool headed reasoning, bi-partisanship, and using civil discourse at the international level.
Even I'm saying: "WTF? Really? What did he do that was Nobel Prize worthy?"
Sure I expect that he will do something sometime during his presidency that would earn him such an honor, but I don't think its happened yet.
The only explanation that I can come up with is that world leaders are such monumental douchebags that when someone of decent character takes the office its so dramatic a contrast that the Nobel committee believes it should be rewarded.
God, the world is soooooo fucked up right now...

It is a weird thing for sure and after thinking about it for a while the only conclusion I can come to is...
Its a gesture of good faith, as fucked up as that sounds. The U.N. was so happy to have Obama win plus Obama went on an around the world peace mission almost as soon as he got in office and was not afraid to show humble respect to other world leaders even when many Americans felt we were too good to shake hands with other leaders from around he world. Remember all the fuss when Obama paid respect to other nations? Other countries found his actions a HUGE change in U.S. policy and arrogance. I can only think the rest of the world is much more happy with Obama than we are lead to believe here in the states because of propaganda machines like FOX news. This is why many Americans and media watchers are confused...me too for that matter. I think its FAR too soon for that award but I think perhaps the world hopes that by giving t to Obama he will step up his world peace mission. Who really knows...
Just as confusing to me though is the Americans who are actually MAD that our President got the award. Confusing yes but why the anger. We should at least be proud even if we can't understand it. The world sees the U.S. President as a peaceful person and thats a good thing.

I hate to agree with Jimmy Carter (again) but I do. I think international leaders see something so different and inspiring in Obama that they want him to change the world. Eight years of George W. Bush gets you this: an international community that thirsts for leadership and progressive thinking.
They jumped the gun a little though IMO. It's like running up to the cool kid in class and asking him to be your best friend.
Former President Jimmy Carter says the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to President Barack Obama is a "bold statement of international support for his vision and commitment." Carter won the peace prize himself in 2002, two decades after leaving office. In a statement, he described the Nobel committee's decision Friday as support for Obama's work toward peace and harmony in international relations.
Carter says the award shows the Obama administration represents hope not only for Americans, but for people around the world.

Oh c'mon, he's played with his dog! That's enough to earn that honour.
...wait, Nobel Peace Prize? Oh, I was thinking of a cookie there for a moment. Yeah, that's very strange.

Just figured out why he won. He was being awarded the peace prize for calling Kanye West out for being a douchebag (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IO_QIMNRreg). That single act has created intolerance for douchebaggeries around the world. This has resulted in a never before drop in douche bagging, and made the entire world more peaceful. We all owe a great deal of gratitude to Mr. Obama, a great deal of gratitude indeed. This act even makes up for his declaration of war against the Diptera's. There are a couple of different ways of interpeting this, aren't there?
One is that he won the prize for not being white. Don't jump me yet, pay attention. America electing a president who is avowedly not-entirely-Caucasian is probably seen around the world as a major step towards tolerance and opportunity, which have gotten mixed together with more traditional understandings of "peace" over time due to the perception of inequality and ethnic oppression as major causes of war. But the Nobel is given to people, not nations. So while it is the US in toto who have "earned" the prize, by electing him, it is he who is receiving it for us as our representative and the symbol of what is seen as our accomplishment.
The other is that he won it for not being George W. In this scenario, it's not his so-far-miniscule contributions to international affairs which got him the prize, so much as having the good luck to follow someone who is widely perceived as being something like an anti-peace laureate. Simply by bringing the scale back to 0 from the huge negative score they would like to give the little Texan, he is seen as a major contributor to world peace. Thus again, it is symbolic, this time the equivalent of giving Bush some sort of leboN war un-prize.
Either way, it was inevitable. Like the Oscars, the Miss America crown, or the ubiquitous college diploma, the Nobel no longer means anything like what it was intended to mean. It's just another lie to stick on your resume next to that public service crap you did to prove you were a good team player in the retarded game of fool-your-neighbor.

Best point: conservatives, always the ones to throw out terms like "Unamerican" or "America Haters" at our citizenry are trying to bask in every failure our country incurs under the Obama administration.
They are cheering American failure because it shines on the president they so dislike.
You know what? Good thing Obama got the peace prize. Fuck this bullshit.
