I'm glad we have an section for Audio and Video. I am also glad I can lend some experience to it.
Keep in mind that this is a file sharing bbs. There are sites dedicated to doing nothing but promoting pc based A\V and codecs. THAT is what they do.
If you cant find the answer to what you want by searching this thread, or all threads using key words, then please, go to :
http://doom9.org
and read the FAQ and download section. Also,
http://www.divx.com/support/
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/index.html
http://www.divxmovies.com/ (guides and software)
http://www.divxcrawler.com/ (guides and software)
http://divx.start4all.com/ (many links, better have a pop-up killer)

Great idea for a thread Krell, I've noticed a TON of questions related to basic codec problems lately, I hope this saves everybody a lot of time
Don't be lazy people, you will almost never have a unique problem that nobody has ever had, just look around a bit, either on this site, or on the links krell provided, you'll get what you want eventually

I was having trouble playing maid in manhattan, even though I had installed the mpeg 4v3 I needed for the playback.
With Krell's help and reading through Doom9.net ( great site ) I realized I also needed some more codecs in order to watch the movie. So I went back to Nimo and followed up thru the basic installation and overviewed all my checked boxes just to make sure I would not install something that would put me in a situation I was before and did give a lot of headaches.
But guess what am I a good student or what?
My movie is playing right now so I am going to make me some popcorn and watch it.
Nice going Krell this thread has so much info and we newbies thank you for that.

Hey bowser, thanx for the link, I just tried the program, its much better than the GSpot program, its very simple, fast and has just what you need, nothing more, great for a noob to find a codec, and even good for an advanced member
I would encourage others to use this program

This was a good idea Krell, and it looks like you took a lot of time doing it. Anyone has a problem and we can just give them this link. We should do that for other topics that have many frequently asked questions. Any fields that any of you feel you excell at, then I suggest that you do the same. I might if I could find one I am good at :-P

I've noticed a few good guides lately, maybe we could work something out with the mods to have a tutorial section, and then have them lock the threads, that way we could always have a good reference, and the threads dont get out of hand or lost
Something I think we should seriously consider, it would be a great asset to the site

Honestly phalkon, that is the best idea I have heard yet about adding forums to ZP. You even made a good point about them not getting lost and having to lock the threads. I think the mods and admins should seriously consider it.

That is a good idea in my opinion, as it might save us from seeing the same questions asked time and time again.

Yeah.....maybe take the search tool a step further.
After doing more research, I found most of the information needed in previous threads regarding music files.
However, still good to hear it from you "experts".
That way we noobies know it's current info.

Bowser, I tried the app. and scanned a movie, telling me I needed a codec that was not installed in my pc. Then I ran Avicodec and Gspot they both gave results saying that my video and audio codecs were supported by my pc and that I could play the movie without trouble.
So I will keep on testing some other movies and see which of all these three performs better.

Wow, Krell. Thanks for spending your time and energy making this thread. This has caught to be one of the most useful threads I have seen around here.
I had a question about codecs myself and after searching I came across this. Now all my questions are answered (or they're at least at the tips of my fingertips, hehe).
And Bowser, thanks for that link too, dude. Great program, I've bookmarked the site.

Hey bowser, thanx for the link. I used to use Gspot but it wasn't working for me too well. Half the movies that I had but couldn't play because Gspot couldn't figure out what codec they needed. This prog is a lot better.

For future reference, where can I find Avicodec and Gspot (lol, what a fitting name)? That way I can monitor either one. Thanks.

I like you guys, I really do, I think I've proven it. However, theres a time honored skill, sort of investigative in nature, called, LOOKING AROUND.
You go to those sites, like Doom9, click links that say "downloads" or "tutorials" . . . and get what you need.
Otherwise, it would have taken me 200 links on that page. I want to be able to give you credit for getting your answers more than one click away.

ok i got a problem. i was about to say it was codec related but i just managed to sorta solve it. basically i cannot play a file in DIVX player 2.0 or in WMP9 or in the internal kazaa lite player. however i have just managed to play it using avipreview:mellow
i ran the test program by theinfamousone which said that the Xvid codec needed was installed but that the audio codec was missing. the bizarre thing was that it was the MP3 codec, and i can play mp3s perfectly well. i checked a few other films i had lying around and they all said the same audio codec was missing, but they play fine (the rest were all DIVX.) i then installed the nimo codec pack and installed all the 5/6 audio codecs. still didn't play in divx player or WMP9.
i'm only asking this question now out of curiousity. i can view the file perfectly in avipreview, with both audio and video.
any ideas?

I and CCSDUDE have mentioned this before .. . tho it' a bit of a stretch/guess, but we find that if you uninstall Nimo, and Divx, and whatever else you have installed, a lot of times your problem video will play. I think it's the associations that are screwed up. It's from having too many handlers for a file type, may have been created when you installed AVIpreview.
I detailed how to reset them in Explorer, under Tools > Folder Options > File Types.
This is what I would:
1) uninstall your codecs.
2) reset your program associations in Explorer, and in WMP under Tools > Options > Associations
3)test your video
4)add the Apha FFDirectshow filter
5)reinstall the WMP codecs for WPM9
6)add back from Nimo a bit at a time, very little
test as you go.
Let us know how it goes,
cheers

OK I have been having a problem that is related to video.
For the record I have Windows 2000 pro installed on my computer with the latest (well I haven't checked in a few days) updates.
Unique to Win2k (I think anyway) is a "preview function" in folders. It is on the left side whenever you single click on a video or picture. It is a little box that either shows the picture, or the first frame of the video and gives you the option of playing the video right there. When I updated Windows Media Player to version 9 a few months back I have been having an ongoing problem. Every few times I single click a picture or movie (not ALL of the time, but more of an interval of 5) my computer crashes. It takes a few minutes to reset itself (I am thinking it is explorer.exe that is crashing) but everything is better. It is annoying more than anything and I wish it to stop.
Do you know how I can turn off the "preview function"? (I dunno if that is what it is called).
Upgrading to XP or downgrading to 9.x is not an option I would like to take. Any ideas?
(I am not at home right now, I am at a friends computer that has XP so I cannot provide a screenshot as of yet. If you require that or any other information then please say so and I will provide it as soon as I get home later tonight.)
Thanks.

Hello MoonMan
Open up Explorer, and then click once on the C: drive
Select VIEW > LIST
Now select TOOLS > Folder Options > View. Click APPLY TO ALL FOLDERS.
Under the advanced settings, see if Do Not Cache Thumbnails is an option.
Close Explorer, then open it again, and all your folders should be set to LIST.
Now Close Explorer, and Search / Find. Find all instances of the thumbs.db on your PC, and delete them.
I just reset my view to LIST, globally, and I have hundreds of folders across multiple drives, and tens of thousands of pics, and it worked perfectly.
I do not have a copy of W2000 on one of my machines currently, but I will look at this on a W2000 pro machine later today.
This is a Microsoft knowledge base article about why you might not be able to reset your folders, which is why I ask you to delete the thumbs.bd files, just in case.

krell - i removed divx and xvid, upon reinstalling i got a really f***ed picture in avi preview.
i have now removed both of those again. which file assocations do i have to reset and should i remove all video codecs (note XP tells me not to remove them as they are needed by the system - same for the wma codecs etc)
sorry but i'm gonna need a step by step guide on this bit:mellow

I've been using Gordian Knot for a long time and I just wanted to warn anyone who's new to it that...
Divx 5.03 is NOT fully compatible with GKnot 0.27.
You have to use version 5.02 of the Divx codec or the compressibility check and multipass encoding won't work right. You can get version 5.02 in the System Pack at Doom9.org.

ffdshow/nero decoder and a number of other directshow filters should have you covered
VLC player will cover the rest and ogg/ac3filter/lame should handle all your audio needs
conversion is another matter in which case wiki is your friend for all the offical/best unoffical vfw codecs needed to edit/fix or transcode your files
since most release group files tend to have vbr mp3 encoding you're SOL if you lose frames
a full decompress manual sync and recompress is needed
