I'd like to know what people think of Gnucleus as an alernative to other Gnutella clients like Limewire or XoloX. I tried it a few versions ago and was not impressed. Anyone have experience with the later builds and, if so, is it any good at all?

The latest version is DEFINENTLY worth your time, it's very very very good. Has lots of options for it's users to play around with and get maxium speed and results. This should be anyone's and everyone's main Gnutella client.

the multisource d/ls are incredible. And enough people are running some sort of gnutella client with superpeers, supernodes or whatever their flavor calls them to be of use. Beginning to feel more and more like fasttrak when it was at its best. Gnucleus may actually edge out DC as my number 2 p2p client.
But without a doubt it is the best gnutella client for my purposes. Others users needs may be different enough to warrant another gnutella client, but as for me, Gnucleus is the best.

I'm not about to slag off gnucleus here, but I have to point you to the gnucleus forums, where it's becoming obious that the latest version's habit of connecting to one SuperNode only is angering a lot of people, myself included.
The thing is, the SuperNone option appears to be turned on by default, meaning that lots of people who are not capable of being supernodes actually become them. This emans that you are very likely to connect to a really crap supernode, and once you do Gnucleus will refuse to connect to anything else.
Yes I know you can disconnect and try manually, but it's a pain in the ass. But to prove the point, I kept forcing disconnects until I was no longer on Supernodes:
1 supernode = crap search results, no downloads.
7 normal nodes = half decent search results, some downloads.
Still, I think the priogram needs to mature more. It's one of those puzling things where all the features are there, the technology is brilliant, the execution seems on target.... but the bloody thing just doesn't work right.
Not to mention the fact that it can loop itself into 100% CPU usage, leaving the computer useless if left unattended overnight.
Still too hit-and-miss for my liking. I'm sticking with XoloX as my overnight downloader. It's managing to find me all the episodes of Trigun (rare as hell) where all other P2P programs failed.

Once all of your files finish hashing you should connect to more then one supernode. When I frist ran the latest version of gnucleus the supernode option was off, it was not set to on as default on the version I downloaded from www.gnucleus.net . Last night I was connected to three supernodes at once. The search results are the fastest I have seen, not that that did me any good as it keeps locking up my system every time I try to download something (If the download speeds are as good as the search results gnucleus will rule for now). This is a known bug and I am sure it will be fixed in a matter of time. Once the few bugs are fixed I think Gnuclues will be the leading Gnutella client. Maybe XoloX will be great again after they have finished playing catch up.

So, is 8 hours of idleness a sufficient amount of time for Gnucleus to hash 20-30GB of files? Because if it is, then the multiple supernode thing didnt work. Still 1 supernode, still no joy.
What you say is also in conflict with what is being said in the Gnucleus forums, which is that if you're connected to 1 supernode that's all you ever need, and Gnucleus purposefully stops connecting to anything else.

I stand corrected. It is not the hashing that gets you more supernode connections. It seems the more you are sharing the more supernode connections you get. http://198.77.215.32/gnuforum/viewthread.php?tid=1091

And 30 gigs isn't enough? Man... what do these people want, blood? :hole

I only have a 10gig hard drive. I guess there is more than one way to get connected to more then one supernode.

I only have 3 Gigs shared, and I connect to 3 Ultrapeer nodes within a minute of startup, pretty much every time. I've been using the program for about 9 months, so I'm probably better than a new user at configuring it, but it's not hard and my settings aren't that far from default.
I've left the program on well in excess of 24 hours, and I've never encountered it bogging down my CPU like Roamerick has encountered.
Overall, the program is the most stable I've encountered, and Swabby has updates for it out weekly it seems, so it's tech is always up to date. The interface is amazing, easy to use and to set up to one's liking to fit any situation, and with a click of the maximize button is virtually identical to the Kazaa, WinMX, LimeWire interface (though why people seem to prefer this I will never know). Multisourcing works well. Searches are more than decent and are easily and quickly filtered, my only complaint bing they still don't feature bitrate info. It even includes a basic IRC chat client.
As far as Gnutella clients go, in my opinion it don't get better than Gnucleus. I highly reccommend you pick one up.

If Gnucleus returned bit rates and lengths with the MP3 search results, like Bearshare and Limewire, it would be the best client out there.

I second RevTim's post, bitrates & song lengths would be extremely useful features, especially when searching for different versions/mixes of songs.
Gnucleus is extremely stable on my machine and doesn't seem to draw excessive resources (as opposed to WinMX 2.6 which always seemed to steal hard drive space while it was running). Searches are quick and thorough. I like the display. The automatic updates are the best; no fooling around looking for the latest version and all that stuff.
Another complaint is that often songs from multiple hosts aren't always available. I tried downloading a file that was on 30 hosts and none of them connected. That seems pretty weird to me. I don't understand the reason for that.
Overall, it's a great freesource program and my fav Gnutella client by far (for now ;-).

Yeah Gnucleus has all the makings of a great client, if only Swabby stopped fúcking around with new features and concentrated on fixing the following two idiotic bugs:
1) Remove dead hosts from a download's alternative sources
2) Fix the obvious connection stability problems for downloads.
Gnucleus woul;d rock. But right now it's like you said, leave it on for a day and you end up with 300 sources for a file - most of which were obsolete after an hour of being added to the list of alternatives. Man I got sources that are a week old and it still tries to ping them. Since most people have dynamic IPs, they're long gone, but Gnucleus is too stupid to figure it out.
I can't tell you how much such a simple bug irritates me....

To paraphrase what Swaby said in the new #gnucleus channel:
"My priorities at this point are better downloads, better searches, then meta-info."
So more then likely he's working on it, Roam. When I asked him about bitrate info in future evolutions, he said more than likely they would be included.

If you are a zombie and don't mind waiting 48 hours for ONE song out of 4 selected, then go for it. The big drawing card for me was NO SPYWARE but this is ridiculous. There are only 1 or two users available for any one song and you can't get connected. I uninstalled Xolox due to spyware situation and the fact that it took over my system.

The one thing I like about Gnucleus is that its STABLE. It's never crashed my comp. It doesn't connect to as many Ultrapeers as I specify so I don't get lots of results. I use Shareaza. Shareaza lets you have more control over your Ultrapeer connections(I connected to 5 Ultrapeers and over 10 TB of files in about in hour of use). I got good results with that. Xolox is good too especially for big files and it is my favorite overnight downloader. But all in all, Gnucleus is worth a try but features such as "search by media" are long overdue and it seems whenever I ask about them they have some smartass answer about how its "not important" or not needed because of the gay ass search filter(which i'm sorry to say is not the same). So hopefully, Gnucleus will improve GUI wise. So give it a try.
The Iguana is not to be confused with the Geico gecko. So stop calling him too.

Gnucleus is good, but not the best. I tried it and it worked, but i couldnt get very much speed out of it (even though i have a crappy 56k conn.) I can usually get 3-4kb download with other programs, but i only got 1-2kb with gnucleus.
I prefer Shareaza. its got a lot of power and i always get "fast" downloads with it. Shareaza is packed with features and i think it just runs better overall.

When I connect I connect to multipe supernodes, runs stable 24+ hours at a time & my settings aren't far from default either. I've been trying both Gnucleus and Shareaza and they both perform well. Along with LimeWire-AquaLime these programs are cutting edge. Competition - making things better.
