Its actually a seal that I assume keeps the tube from collapsing under its own weight by allowing a certain level of air pressure in. It doesn't look so bad on flat structures, but on slides its just wrong.

Well, that makes a lot more sense. I've seen that video before, but I just decided to give a quick knee-jerk reaction rather than "seen it." I never bothered to really evaluate the construction of the slide, and notice that important detail.
