View Full Version : most shocking movies ever

I was wondering about everybody's opinion on the most shocking movies here... And I am talking about the kind of 'shocking' that is severe, not the hollywood-kind of chills & horrors like Se7en, Hannibal etc. Not just gore and extreme physical sickness and violence. Shocking in the meaning as surprising, extremely frightening and seriously disturbing.

Audition was an excellent film, at least the japanese version, very twisted, selfironic and amazingly well directed. However, this movie misses the kind of overall atmosphere of darkness and tension that I am looking for... Then, there's The Ring. I've seen I and II, very interesting, but the weirdness turns into ridiculousness too often.

Any ideas?

The Ring is a good choice, I think Requiem for a Dream is the most sickening film I have seen in the past few years. It has some harrowing moments in it. Every high schooler should be required to watch this film.

dunno about The Ring... it tries SO hard to be psycho, weird, surprising, twisted, mysterious... but doesn't quite succeed.

though my negative attitude might well be caused by the fact that I have seen this movie (& part 2) with 13 girls who spent the whole two movies either screaming, laughing about others screaming or discussing the correctness of the plot.

Se7en. most definitely. it's "Not just gore and extreme physical sickness and violence. Shocking in the meaning as surprising, extremely frightening and seriously disturbing." similar films:

the usual suspects
the game
Killing Zoe
To live and to die in L.A.
Alien 3

Der Totmacher (that's a german film, most people probably don't know it. unfortunately).

These films are beyond the usual petty bourgeous horror of Hollywood, they are really disturbing, you don't just watch them and forget after a minute. You think about them for years after seeing for the first time. and you see - some of those I mentioned are by Fincher. his films are the direct opposite of the usual Hollywood petty bourgeois crap.

Night and Fog and I’m Looking at Your Photo are extremely disturbing, and they're documentaries. I still have problems watching the chainsaw scene in Scarface. There's other movies too, but I suck so bad at remembering movie titles and/or actors' names...

I never saw The Ring," but you guys have piqued my curiousity.

There was a movie that came out some years back starring Dee
Snider, the 1980's rock singer. He played a pervert who got off on pain, both on himself and hurting other people. He went by the name Captain Howdy. Some of the torture scenes were pretty shocking and disturbing. Can't remember the name of the movie though.

A movie that truley disturbed me quite a bit was Sleepers. I've seen blood and guts but nothing could prepare me for such raw drama. Still, this is a movie worth seeing.

Oh my god, you guys are totally off on this. You guys need to watch more foreign cinema if you really wanna see some disturbing stuff that our candy@ss MPAA won't allow.

Try "Battle Royale" easily one of the most disturbing films I've ever seen. In the film, a survival program intended by the Japanese government consists of sending a 42 student ninth grade class every year on a deserted island by way of lottery, giving each of them some food, a map, a random weapon and an explosive necklace. The rules are simple: they have three days to kill each other until only one survives. If, after three days, more than one student is alive, ALL the necklaces explode. Its about as violent as the most violent films in America, except these are 14-15 year old kids. Get it on Ebay, cuz this movie is not for sale in the US.

For American Film Buffs. I would have to say "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer". This flick stays with you for years to come. The scene of the two serial killers mutiliating an entire family and watching the videotape they made over and over again is truly raw. This flick is also considered by many critics to be the best serial killer movie ever made, cuz of the raw and unbridled realism and the great acting by Michael Rooker in his first role. It may have won some major awards if the American public wasn't so sensitive to this material. However, you can get this DVD at your local Blockbuster. THIS FLICK IS NOT FOR THE WEAK OF HEART.

I DONT THINK ANYBODY CAN TOP THESE TWO. MIGHT AS WELL CLOSE THE THREAD...

You're kidding, right? You might be right to say that David Fincher has directed a couple of good movies, but disturbing? Scary? Even slightly? Alien 3 or Götz George disturbing?! *lol*

as I see it, there're three kinds of movies:

a) The extreme kind of violent, sick, very graphical - and very disturbing movies; like Cannibal Holocaust, Guinea Pig, Man Behind the Sun, Aftermath, Nekromantik etc.

b) Weird horror(ish) movies like The Ring or Audition with lots of strange images, twists & turns.

c) Subtle, tensious thrillers like Signs, What Lies Beneath etc. with lots of little shocking moments and a nice overall feel of dark suspense.

Now, is there no movie to combine all these features? If no, it should better be made...

By the way, NightsMaster, that was "Dee Snider's Strangeland" you were talking about. Gory, but not very good. Stick with my flicks if you want true quality cinema. Not kidding either, these flicks are highly regarded. Roger Ebert loved "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer."

Look for a Japanese film called "The Eye" Its about a woman who gets an eye transplant and begins to see violent spirits. VERY CREEPY. I believe its going to be remade just like "The Ring" was. Tom Cruise bought the rights to remake it, so he seems to love it.

has Tom Cruise specialized on remakes or something? just wondering... after Vanilla Sky (which was seriously amazing)

The Eye looks good... website reminds me on these 'shocking' e-cards that make you stare at a silent scene for a minute and then shoot some corpse onto your screen ;)

Just for something that is a little real and very good, for a few lessons on how fucked up our world is.

Watch the documentary "The Fog of War"

What about the other Takashi Miike films? Yes, Audition was top dog, but I thought Ichi the Killer was waaay hard boilded and Fudoh as well. Let's not even get started on Visitor Q...

There's 3 Eye films now, none of which really moved me... but they're still good.

I saw a really good Thai horror flick called Shutter - that was really well done and creepy...

As far as American flicks? I dunno, I thought Saw, House of 1000 Corpses, and the venerable TCM (even the remake) are about as disturbing as Hollywood will go.
