I have stopped using Mininova because of the trouble with virus' that are plaguing the users there and I myself also got hit with 72 trojans and virus' on a newly installed OS so I disabled my account and stopped uploading there. It seems many of the public sites are still around but many suck these days. I would like for there to NOT be any bickering about "members only sites" in this thread please. Lets just list some good public sites that people can enjoy without having to sell our souls to some young elitist douche bags who are drunk with the power they think they have because they can ban the users at will. Sharing should be hassle FREE! Now....lets see some public sites people
I have recently converted to a site I think is up and coming...
ExtraTorrent.Com (http://extratorrent.com)
Extratorrent gives good info on their torrents and usually displays pics to go with the movies which I myself particularly enjoy. I think its one of the best new ( at least to me ) torrent sites. I have found the speeds to be VERY fast. I have got 1.2Meg on the first few movies I have tried there. Its hard to beat that but lately the public sites have vastly improved and I am thinking this is because almost everyone now has HUGE pipes to upload with... so nice!

well while not completely public, Demonoid is also a nice place to find rare stuff. They aren't nazis when it comes to share ratio either. I even think I read somewhere the only consequence of a bad share ratio will be the occasional comment from other users who feel you should share more.
Also that share ratio is so incredibly easily reached because of the massive user base. While I do use private sites mostly and only use Demonoid for rare stuff, I honestly can't remember the last time I didn't get above 1.0 ratio again fast on a 512Kbps up line. No matter how obscure the content was.
Speeds range everywhere from crap to MBs/s, depending on uploader, seeds and leechers.
IMO a great substitute for when thepiratebay goes payservice.
The site opens registrations often, like once a month usually. And if not willing to wait, invites are in abundance.
note: don't ask for invites here, as it's not allowed.

Demonoid has been a good site for a long time now. I have obtained much from them without being a member. Its one of the few members only sites that I would consider signing up to.

PM sent.
As far as public trackers go, I don't use many. I have heard that Torrentfive is good from a couple of friends. BT Junkie used to be good, but I haven't used it in a while. While Bitsoup is private it does open once in a while. They seem to have good content. Just my 2 cents!

I just checked out torrentfive. It has lots of files, but I hate the gui. It took me a while to find the real search feature, after clicking on a few pop-ups. The content is still there and it's still good. Just be careful where you click.
here's a few other trackers I like:
-Fenopy
-sumotracker
-Torrentbox
-btmon

Another huge tracker is Zamunda.net, which last I looked had a 500.000 member limit and open signups whenever they're below that. It's Ukrainian or Russian or something, but English layout is available. I've never been a member myself, but have only heard nice things about it.

Looks good. Torrentfive is also Russian, I believe.

SumoTorrent shows up a lot. They seem to be the type of people that fit in with the Smiley philosophy.
"SUMOtracker is not a site that intends to compete with other BitTorrent trackers. The site and the tracker are just our contribution to the community! Hence, our purpose is absolutely not to make SUMOtracker outgrow other trackers, but to work with other webmasters to make the BitTorrent network stronger. A concrete example of our way of thinking: SUMOTorrent not only adds SUMOTracker, but also other public trackers like Pirate Bay to the announce-list. So any torrent with SUMOTracker as backup also has Pirate Bay as a backup tracker.
We also shared the source code for this feature to other BitTorrent sites. Monova.org or FullDls.com for example, are using a similar method! And if there are new public BitTorrent site starting, we will also support them and integrate them!"

I know a lot of people are SNOBS about public torrent sites but i really like ExtraTorrent. I think its the best public site out today, at least for movies. They have a bit of everything...even a good selection of porno and its all set up really nicely. Similar to Mininova but with a lot of newer touches that make it so much better. I like how the new releases section on the front page has pictures of the box covers...like some of the snobish members only sites. The speeds. Must talk about the speeds. Most all of the movies I have downloaded are very fast. 30 minutes to an hour or faster usually. There is a sign up option for guaranteed speed of 16Mb/sec if you like signing p for things.
I think its the best IMO. Its nice not having to sign up unless I want to do so and I think all sites should follow suit.
Choices -
Private - Good if you need to be a member to feel special
Public - Much Better in every way for everyone

Why do they all call themselves "The World's Largest Tracker" or in this case "The World's Largest Bittorrent System"? They all say it!!

I guess they are all really the same. Its easy to trick people into believing anything.

They've been saying this since the suprnova days. However with Suprnova, back in the day, it was probably true.

Yes, SuprNova was the thing back then.
Ive been working with a lot of different people lately and I am amazed at how many people still do not know what is bittorrent. I heard a guy talking about how another worker got these amazing movies off the internet and didn't know how he was doing it. I guess a lot of people are simple minded when it comes to the PC/internet. After 6 or 7 years I would think they would catch on.
The other worker was charging them for movies so i told them how to get it for free and wrote down the details and gave them my phone number. I HATE people who sell pirated movies.

While true some of us don't have that option. My lovely ISP throttles your connection if it suspects your sharing. They don't watch d/l too much but if you start u/l a lot of anything they slow you down. I even received a letter from them stating that there was suspicion of file sharing, to cease and desist or risk having my internet connection terminated. Most private sites frown badly on low u/l amounts. Hence the reason I'm stuck with public only. My ratios are kinda bad.
I too have stopped using mininova. I have everything scanned that I d/l and thankfully have caught quite a few viruses lately. Any other good public places would be great. I used the bay heavily but that's sinking fast.
p.s. I framed that letter. lmao

Thanks for recommending SumoTorrent, it's a good public site that's easy to use.

I'm a member, and they are really good. It's like a mini-public tracker/major private one with lax regulation. My ratio's dropped below .3 many times on big files (shame) and they don't care, so in that sense its public, but expect good enough speeds with 15+ seeders, and they have a lot of content. I highly recommend it. And I'd recommend demonoid too if they weren't fracking down for the past week.

I have found and like ALIVETORRENTS (http://www.alivetorrents.com)
Its a damn fine search engine and to me seems to have picked up most of the minonova database.

You could look here. (http://www.torrentking.org/?order=category)
I sorted it for you by category since they don't have a "None" option..."None" meaning it's public. Go for the green!

TV - I use EZTV (http://eztv.it/)
Search engine: Torrentz (http://www.torrentz.com/)
-The results give you a list of public and private trackers, there's a few I tend to stick to (btjunkie, rarbg, torrenthound to name a few) It's really simple and non cluttered, I like it.
-To check releases, I use VCDQ (http://www.vcdq.com), or even sometimes I check SCENE RELEASE (http://scenereleases.info), but I rarely do.
Music: Demonoid (http://www.demonoid.com)
- And for anyone interested in Live music, specifically the Dave Matthews Band, Dreamingtree.org (http://www.dreamingtree.org) is the ultimate source for their latest shows ;)
- Also, Archive.org (http://www.archive.org) is an incredible source for live music. I use it every now and then.
