Suddenly Winamp and Windows Media Player won't play......

I can't get any sound from either of them.....although the sound is ok using my Rio player.....i've replaced the speakers (my old speakers sucked majorly anyway) and i've reinstalled winamp.....but that didn't fix the problem......any helpful hints?

did you make any major system changes recently?

Also check if the Window Audio service is enabled, if you are using Win 2000/XP. PM me and i'll tell how to do this.

to ryan: no major system changes and i'm using W98......

to dealie: all devices SEEM to be working properly and enabled; mute option is not enabled, sound levels are good.....

i have good sound quality coming through the rio player.....

to dealie: right now i'm using the internal rio player.....it was included in my rio software.....the external player is not being used at all right now......

Is your sound card driver compatible with your OS?If so,then try installing the latest Windows Media Player Codecs.Or,try to upgrade to WMP v.7 or 9. :fire

uninstalled nav recently? thats wot hapnd 2 me along with a whole load of other things. if so go to www.symantec.com and search for rnav2003.exe

so that narrows down the problem area for me.....

...my .02...check your firewall settings. Both of those players need to 'phone home' . If prevented from doing so ..they don't work.

ummm.... I never let either phone home, they still work. and winamp accesses the internet for its built in minibrowser, wmp does it for codec downloads, and god knows what else. mikehunt, I know you mean well but there is little to no reason for allowing those access. at least that I know of.
