Magna International Inc. chairman Frank Stronach said he wants to start mass-producing electric cars in Canada within three years.

The head of Canada's largest auto parts maker was in Ottawa on Tuesday seeking government support for his new electric vehicle venture after Magna cemented a deal with General Motors Corp. to acquire the U.S. automaker's money-losing Opel car brand in Europe.

Unveiling the fully electric compact that Magna developed in partnership with Ford Motor Co., Stronach said he is being courted by the U.S. and Europe but he wants his first electric cars to come off a Canadian assembly line.

"We are very serious, we have a serious commitment," he told reporters.

It's about damn time too. It took bankrupting GM and Chrysler to do it, but if electric cars get rolled off an assembly line and into people's driveways, then the two auto-giants crashing to the ground was worth it. I humbly wait for my electric car.

are we going to have to scrap it and sink it if it proves to be better than an American version?

Wouldn't that be something if a Canadian company took over the auto world. Always figured Bombardier would become the first major Canadian auto maker, guess I might be wrong.

actually, I was wondering since only the American side of GM was filing for Chapter 11 and now both a Canadian federal government and an Ontario government have invested a good chunk of our money into GM, why wouldn't they just buy the Canadian operation altogether? I am sure we could have some green vehicles soon. I know we have enough technology here to bring some very good innovation to the market.
