You came to the right place.
First things. Most all media files need codecs to play. A Divx movie needs a DivX codec. An Mpg needs an Mpg codec, and there are many. Where can I find a source for all these codecs?
Read this article, it has links in it that you need.
http://www.zeropaid.com/bbs/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5187
The Nimo pack has most codecs in it, follow the instructions on install.
Here's a headstart for you, and everyone should take a few moments to investigate this site if you have not.
http://www.doom9.org/
Use the other recomended softwares to give you the info you need for future help requests, or to just get educated.
NOW . . . why on earth do you want to convert an AVI to an Mpg?
ps: in the future always include your info like which O/S you use, which players, which movies in question etc

The Program I am useing to convert AVI to MPG is called TMPGE. The Movie in Question is just about all of them right now I am downloading spirt-of cimarron. I have to convert becouse I can not burn a AVI to CD. And all I get is audio with no video. The AVI's open with real player and MPG's open with win-media. So far all the Movies I have downloaded have been in MPG format and have worked just fine. But I can not find Spirt in the mpg fortmat to download.
Ok and the Program that I am useing to burn the cd's is just what came with the CD BURNER and that is NTI CD-Maker 2000 Plus. Now I got all of this stuff for Christmas and am very new at it all and kind of stupid when it comes down to all this stuff. SO dose that help you any.

It helps me to help you my friend.
For one, your inablity to burn an AVI is not a great reason to go to the trouble of conversion. What is means is, you need to solve your first problems first.
Sit back, take a deep breath, and prepare, to uninstall all of the crap you dont need from Add\Remove Programs. That means NTI Cd maker also. Lighten your load, and get rid of Real Player. *say this with a Scottish accent* It's CRAP
After you uninstall anything that you dont need, I want you do scandisk, and then defrag your drives, all of them.
Next you download a copy of nero, I think 5.5.1.0 is the latest. Dont worry about a seriel #, thats very easy to come by. *cough*
Install the Nimo pack as instructed. Also get BSPlayer, or the NextGen Player I mentioned in the thread you were supposed to read.
When you have done this, you should be able to view most anything, and burn a DivX avi Cd up to 702 MB. Also, as a rule try to not download anything that exceeds 736,000,000 Mb
Work this out, tell me you have these installed and can view movies with the player and codecs, and we'll procede from there.

First off, dont ever come behind me again with your " I know better than you attitude"
Secondly, this persons needs assistance with a root problem, not to try and fucking learn to overburn, dipshit.
Third, dont dish out advice, then tell us that your advice sends your hardware back because its damaged.
Fourth, dont go behind any of us again with your "I know better than you attitude"

It would appear that zeropain is just wearing out his welcome, without the help of the Mod that are prejudiced, not. You dig your own hole, now you have been told. Leave us alone.

We KNOW how to overburn, that's not the issue here. My chip is that you're a condescending smart-ass. I'm sure most of us have been over-clocking, doing multimedia and conversion at least as long as you have.
I try to make things more simple for people, you try to make them more complicated.
"Okay seeing how I have no Ideal what they are talking about . . "
We dont need any more know-it-alls making things difficult here. We finally got rid of one such person, and no one is ready for another.
Read the house cleaning thread, the shoe fits.

no one is pulling any higher up shite man, and I dont knwo what moderator you are referring to, I think I am the only one around right now. just imagine this: you have been on a forum for a good long while, you've become comfortable with the people there, you've made many freinds.... and then someone shows up and out of the blue starts trolling. andthen admits it.
and then that individual takes a contrarian attitude, posting with an end all be all attitude and then getting frustrated when people dont take kindly to it.... how would you feel dude? what you have here are several righteous members who dont like it. and me, I just got made a mod recently, I do it to help out. trust me, Im not about to be power tripping.
but I imagine you wouldnt like that at all man, not one bit. and that is what you need to understand. just relax dude, you have to prove nothing to anyone here. its obvious that you have a lot to contribute, so why not contribute, get comfortable with the usual maniacs, and let us get comfortable with you? I mean, it just makes more sense to me then what we have seen thus far the past few nights.
of course, this is simply just the opinion of gorphon and should not be considered the opinion of zeropaid. and certainly not a threat from "higher up"

well... it sounds like a codec problem you have there. I would have posted sooner but I was looking for this program avi view that allows you to view many things about a file, including what video and audio codecs you need to play it. unfortunately, I could not find it. I did find this though, and it seems to do much the same thing: g-spot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/)
just install it and open the file in it. all its info should come up. from there you can install the codecs needed, if you dont have them, or ask here for more help...
good luck!

Okay this is what I got after downloading GSpot. It says unable to find codecs installed so now what and how do I do it? It says that I need to find suitable codecs for this format and 4cc
4CC:mp43
name:S-Mpeg 4 version 3
??????????????????????????????????????????????????
gorphon
December 29th, 2002, 10:06 PM
hmmm.... so its an mp43 encoded file... I dont know what the deal is with the S-Mpeg version 3 stuff.... but this is what I would do. well, first, do you know what, if any, codecs you have installed already?
you need to have the mpeg4 codec pack installed. check to make sure if you do. or dont. if not, go here (http://www.411forsex.com/help/codecs_and_tools/codecs.html) and scroll down to the windows codec section and download the mpeg4 codec. as it says, this allows for decompression of mp4, mp42, and mp43 files.
hope that helps. additionally, if it still wont play for you it has some further instructions on that page.
edit. ah. I have figured it out. the S-mpeg version 3 denotes that this was actually encoded with the old angelpotion codec which is now a cast iron, uuhhhh, pain to find since most every single site I know of no longer hosts it due to "compatibility issues." however, I believe the mpeg4 codec pack should work fine for you

I'd give up if I was you. Can't you just buy the film on DVD and be done with it?
That or download a different compressed version of the film.

Had this thread not gotten so convaluted, you would be working by now.
There are 2 utils that will tell you what codecs a movie use, so that there is no doubt about what you need
http://avicodec.duby.info
and the one gorphon mentioned
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
The file that is still in question, verify you have not modified or tamered with it. Exactly what is the name, and the correct file size and extenion, , avi?
Secondly, are you running Windows XP?
I have all the codecs, I have Angel-potion, all the Mp4 versions, and utilities you need. You decide, you can either regroup, and do the first things first, or . . . keep installing more and more software to "unbury" yourself.

Anything that will provide continuity or clarity is welcome. I repeatedly use the term simple or simplicity, and consistancy isnt a bad idea either. You are a knowledgable and resourceful individual, and I believe you can be of great value to the ZP community.
Organization, cooperation and communication will go a long way in providing a harmonious environment, one that I look forward to.
If Chaps2 disires to upgrade, you have my vote. It will be a great step and a fresh start. Just for the record, I do not endorse installing more software to try to solve a problem, if its not necessary to.

the best way is with nero i use 5.919 for some reason 5.10
wont let me do disk to disk, it wont reconise my recorder
but saying that you might find your films turn out upside down
but only div-x so you should use (fx splitter) to split your avi's
and you should be ok..
you can get nero and fx splitter from kazza:cross
