yep the crap is called "Internet Explorer", "Outlook Express", and "Messenger"
removing them doesn't hurt anything in the OS, it just hurts microsoft's data collection and future profitability
their executables can only be deleted in safe mode

crapware?? you mean the best browser, the best email program, and the best messenger system?
show me a company who doesnt participate in data collection, and i'll show you a company on the brink of failure

just because something is the default when you turn it on doesn't make it the best
outlook is the most unsafe and impractical way of getting email there is (why download all of the messages before you even read them?)
there is nothing that IE can do that even the crappiest free browser can't do (while taking up less space and not phoning home)
messenger? never used it, but i hated how it popped up anyway

use this program to get rid of all that
http://www.xp-antispy.de/
its mainly just automatic updating, and extra support crap which i doubt that most people who know what they are doing will need.

Hehe, well guys.. Internet explorer is pretty good browser. I think the reason so many people hate it is because Microsoft made it. It's definatly one of the best browsers out there.. I used to work with Netscape, but I've began to dislike that browser...
About outlook: It is very unsafe, and it has a lot of dumb things in it. There are definatly better e-mail clients.
About messenger: It's pretty good. Cool interface. But the only reason they have so many users is that you can use it with your hotmail account. Otherwise, ICQ would be a lot more popular, because thats a very good program too. But the most popular messenger client will stay the most popular, because all of your friends are using that one...

You can remove messenger w/out harming IE. I read it in some magazine... Oh well, I can't find it. Anyway, it will ruin MSN Explorer & Outlook Express, but I don't think it hurts anything else.

IMHO, MSN is perfectly simple when used in conjunction with Trillian/Jabber/Telus IM etc . . .
I agree that Explorer and OE are crap, and that's why I use Mozilla. Does anyone out there use Phoenix? If so, how is it?

easiest way to remove messanger is to go into the program files folder find a folder called "messanger" and rename it "messanger2" then no more messanger.. Select ok for any warnings that come up too..
If it ever comes back in future service packs or anything then do have to do it over again.

ok not all of ms's products are the "best", i know a simple way to stop msn messenger from loading when opening outlook express, go to your program files section of your harddrive and you should see a folder called 'messenger' just simply rename it, and it will never pop up when you open outlook express, or when you start windows. i mostly used open source based software because it is not owned by big corporations, and they wont screw you over with spyware and other shit.

I choose Internet Explorer above all others. Netscape is ok. Opera doesn't work properly sometimes and contrary to its signature, its NOT the fastest browser on earth. Mozilla is ok. I haven't tried any others. I just like the way IE is setup, i'll stick with it until I find something better for me. As for Outlook Express, its shit. Messanger? Never used it.

Why dont you just get a hammer and beat the hell out of it?
When you upgrade to service pack 1, you have the ability to NOT make them your defaults. And, you can uninstall Messenger, Outlook Express and Windows Media Player thru Add\Remove Programs. Tho you can't uninstall IE, you can use another browser as your defaut browser very simply.
The very kernal and heart of services in XP are chatty little bastards, and you need to lock it down as best you can with a firewall. Let's not play word games here, ALL browsers "talk" your data to the sites you visit. And, almost every software known to man collects and publishes data now. This is the world we live in.
As much as I support notbobs rational, even he nows that Linux isnt for everyone. And it is getting bigger and more bloated itself as time goes by. 1Gb to install Gnome and KDE? gimme a break.
You can try to hack up and reverse engineer the O/S, but for what? I see the answer to Juggalo15's question as more of a knowledge\empowerment issue. Learn WHAT the services are doing, and deal with them accordingly, or not.

Krell is right when he says that its as much knowing what the programs do as it is anything else.
Personally, I like beating things with hammers, so let me say I am NOT impressed with XP, or Outlook Express, or MSM, or WMP, and they longer reside on my PC. IE, though, is still the most usable browser on this planet.

Microsoft didn't create IE......
They just slapped they're shitty name on a browser they "bought" then added some calls specific to IE....
It's crap....

O, I didn't know that.
Well Microsoft seems to steal everything. Windows is exctually DOS with a graphical interface... Or did MS create DOS too? I'm confused. I heard they stole some source code to make Windows...

I think if you don't like using them, then don't
I like IE, its the most compatible browser, its built in, and I dont have a complaint against it, Netscape on the other hand....I hate it, it messed up several settings, is slow, and I frankly didnt like it
Outlook is good for a buisness, but for home users, it sorta sux, just use the online version of your mail client, its faster
Msn messenger is ok for a messenger, and it integrates the mail feature well, but just use trillian
The way I figure it, if XP is as bloated as it is, why worry about the 20meg worth of windows crap installed, when it could potentially remove features, just live with them

Dude, it's only "the most compatible" because Microsuck decided to implement their own fucked up ISO standards.....which aren't even ISO standards...lmfao
And it only seems faster and whatever other speed/ram issues you bring up because it's integrated into the system....so in effect its loading when you boot up....
Compare a "clean" IE (never will happen) to a clean version of Mozilla and Mozilla will blow it away. Netscape on the other hand...is shit....Time Warner AKA AOL bought it and fucked it up.
I agree.... XP sucks....I'll use ME or 2k.....or a pro edition of XP that has no shitty activation code...
As for Dos....nope MS didn't create it...
They didn't create Hotmail nor did they create outlook.....
Come to think of it prolly everything they "made" has at least 30% "bought" code....from some company they drove outta business and bought 'em up.

Dude, no arguments, just giving ya the "low down" on it. That's why it seems better; because MS tried they're hardest to make it soooooo outta spec and popular enough to be implemented into sites all over the world to literally take over with it. They'll always have that power hungry aspect to them.....
Give Mozilla a try.....even if IE stays your first browser Mozilla WILL take over as your forum browser....being mulitabbed and all you can work forum(s) alot easier.
I totally agree with you....on LMD's POST!!!!! LOL

well im still using win98 here but from what i have used heres what i think
msn- i use trillian much better then any stand-alone messenger
OL- sucks, i prefer any webmail account over it
IE- its pretty good but i prefer NetCaptor wich uses the IE engine but it has many more features and i use Mozilla as my second browser, if mozilla had some netcaptor features i would use it a my primary.
WMP- CrapWare Pro, i prefer winamp anyday

How can people say XP is crap, it is simply the best operating system ever released..end of story
why have cotton (win 98,95 2000, me) when you can have silk(xp)?
and why say ie is crap? it shows web pages quite competently
why say messenger is crap? it sends messages very well
why say outlook is crap? it emails perfectly
just cos some people are anti microsoft doesnt mean that microsoft dont make excellent products

IBM didnt create the first dos...
a small company in wasington did, then big bill bought it and whored it to ibm.
as for xp, i am a big fan (in general) but i dont like all the 'security' features in it. it's seemingly as stable as linux, and is alot more versitile. if i had my own pc though, i would dual boot xp and linux. i like em bot, but i needed the ability to run win apps, so i had to stick with windows. oh well.

While we're on the subject.. anyone have any recommendations for a better email client other than Outlook? I use it only because it's more convenient to combine my seperate emails into one place (even though I don't like it much).. it takes me three times as long if I were to log into each webmail account seperately.

Eudora mail is pretty good from what I've heard.
And I like Xp too, I've had my pc for over 3 months now, and it hasn't ctashed a single time running win xp pro! Awesome.
My win 98 pc crashed every day, and win me crashes every hour. But I agree that Microsoft has put in a lot of useless things, but you can easily disable them if you like...

TheBat! (shareware) is the best email client I've ever used. Beats the shit out of Pegasus Mail, FoxMail, Outlook Express, and probably a few others that were so bad that I can't remember them.
I'm sticking with my horrible, unstable Windows ME for now, until I get the balls to install Red Hat 8.0, since I've already downloaded it and burned it to CD-R's. I'm not paying $200 for and XP upgrade while Linux and WINE are around. I read that India's gov't has ditched Microsoft in favor of Linux.
I don't use MSN Messenger, WMP 7.x/8.x/9.x... but I do use IE, with MyIE2 for the sake of system resources, speed, compatibility, and simply because Mozilla pissed me off. It would keep removing my Flash installation and simply started up too slowly and pages didn't always show up as they should. I figure IE with Proxomitron and CookieWall will be better.

I read that Microsoft is going to buy India, and all convienient stores, and move Microsoft there as a result of being pissed off by the anti-trust suit.
It will called the First Independent Republic of Microsoft.

yes these things work fine, but there are ones at least as good (better in some cases) available for free
as for saying SP1 makes these things removable, that is B.S.--they go into "hibernation", they are not deleted
Why should i be forced to have these things taking up space on my computer (they don't let you uninstall them, you can't even delete them in normal mode without them popping back) when there are smaller, better (free!) programs i can use?
