A number of health benefits have been ascribed to the omega-3 fatty acids commonly found in fish oils, and now experts believe they may also help treat cancer patients. In a recent study, an omega-3 fatty acid called docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, reduced the size of tumors growing in mice and enhanced the effects of cisplatin, a chemotherapy drug known to cause kidney damage, while limiting the drug’s harmful side effects. DHA also appears to counter several processes linked to tumor growth, including the accumulation of white blood cells, systemic inflammation, and oxidative stress.
