Mental decline is generally associated with old age, but it turns out that some aspects of brain function actually begin to deteriorate at a much earlier stage in life. A study of more than 2,000 healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 60 found that certain mental functions—including measures of abstract reasoning, mental speed, and puzzle-solving—begin to dull as early as age 27. Things like memory, meanwhile, remain intact until about a decade later. Overall, participants’ performance on most tests of mental agility peaked at around age 22.

I'm assuming the sample they chose when they started the study would be free of that.

That is ludicrous, my school year at the age of 22 was abysmal, did much better when I was 20.
