Well you can take a hammer to it, or a can of spray paint. Maybe add a bit of glitter if you are into that sort of thing.
Anyway on a more serious note, I know that a while back a mod chip was release, don't know what the current status is on that. There was also at some point a hack that exploited a flaw in one of the games. This allowed system access at which point you could install homebrew.

I don't think were supposed to tell how to do that here.
If you go to http://www.xboxscene.com/ you should find what your looking for.

YOutube is your friend. Nintendo really helped out the mod community by making it easier, on purpose no less, but its still dicey and you may want to pay someone who knows how to do it right. Its pretty straight forward but you may have to surf awhile to find the hack you need. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSHp27WzsYI
I bet it took me over an hour to find the correct call letters ( what are they called? ) for me to play Dreamcast games on my PC. I bet they include them with the EMU's now but most people are not so bold. I love playing Jet Set Radio on my PC monitor. Beautiful.

You need zelda twilight princess, and an SD card plus internet access for your wii (required for the install right now), and a little patients with the directions. I modified my Wii, and its working great.
Google SoftMii, its version 2.1.1 now I believe.
I'm assuming you wanted to 'backup' your wii games ;)
Post here or PM me if you need help.

Damn. I didn't think it would be so easy but I knew it was pretty simple. I saw a speech on youtube at or around the launch of the Wii where some big shot was showing the guts of the Wii. He pointed to one key part that he said Nintendo put in for the sole purpose of making it easy to mod. The crowd laughed but he was serious. He said he could not explain why Nintendo did it but it was the only explanation he could give for the hardware design.
Pretty cool of Nintendo I guess.

Yea, Nintendo seems to be going easy on the homebrew community, just wish they had some storage space on that sucker! Hell, you can even play a 'backup' of mario kart wii online ;)

You are probably not on the correct version for those files, or are using an outdated hack or are out of space. I would suggest using a tutorial from a recent hack (like softmii) to get your system up to date (homebrew wise) and on the latest hackable firmware.
Wad files should install with no trouble using the wad manager in the homebrew channel after doing this, assuming you have enough free space (the wii has virtually no free space...)

Seems Nintendo covered all their bases to try and please all forms of gamers with this console. They may have left movie buffs out in the cold but I have a feeling most gamers want to get their game on rather than watch Murder She Wrote with Grandma. Hell, I bet even grandma would rather Wii than watch another crusty episode of that old gem. Now, back to the hack already in progress.

I think Nintendo did right by leaving out DVD capability. It made the system so much cheaper, profitable, and still relatively packed with features.
Besides, everything plays DVDs now. I can watch a movie on my laptop, desktop, ps2, xbox, and actual DVD player.

Just give us expandability in the next console Nintendo! Let me plug in a hard drive or something besides an SD card :\
On a side note, I haven't put a dvd into my dvd player in forever. I always use my xbox/ps3 since they are already hooked up to my tv. Never played a dvd on my computer...

Since my last DVD/Divx player burned up over a year ago I never replaced it. Now my WD media player is all I use and its almost all I watch. I tune into cable to catch the news and see whats on the educational channels. There are about 4 channels I watch...PATHETIC! If it wasn't cheaper to have it bundled with my internet I would not pay for TV at all. Next month I am telling them to give me the cheapest package on cable and internet. I have almost everything I need downloaded to my media center and it would take probably 6 months of almost continuous viewing for me to see everything. I conservatively estimate I have over 2500 hours of video on hand, at the push of a button. Now thats ON DEMAND viewing! Best device I have bought in a long time. I can't tell exactly how much I have on hand because the device doesn't display the correct number of video's for some reason. Some files it counts twice. It says I have over 4000 movies and TV shows but I think its more like 3,500. I have 240Gigs of space left to fill and I am running out of stuff I would want to watch. By cutting down my cable package I plan on saving $100 a month. If there is anyone left who hasn't bothered to snatch one of these babies up yet...what are you waiting for? Everyone here who has one raves about them and its no BS. For such a cheap gadget you can't go wrong. They were on sale for $89 but I think they are back to full price again. Keep checking though as they go on sale a lot. I hear its one of the best selling devices out there. Boy, did this thread go left or what? My fault, sorry
@moonman, you forget cell phone. Now people use them to watch TV and movies too. I only use mine to play ms pac man because no one ever calls.

Does anyone know if the Wii softmod that uses SD cards to mod the Wii really works on NEW Wii's? I would like to do this for me Nieces but I will not do it if it BRICKS their console.

Yes it will work. Be sure to check compatability of the SD card though. Also, some newer wii's can not read burned DVD's, something about the laser, so you might need to use a USB or SD loader for games, but thats preferrable by most anyway.
Edit: for guides I recommend gbatemp forum

Thanks Toker! I am really on the fence about doing this though. I do not like the ripping off of new games as I support the gaming industry all that I can - thats very little these days though. I do, however, fully support the sharing of older content that the industry already made huge amounts of green $$$ with. Of course there are other uses for this mod besides getting new games for free though and the Wii has been out for some time so there are some oldish games to be shared. Some times I hate my ethics,,,just kidding! I hold fast my convictions no matter how great it would be to have FREE stuff!

There is some really good legit homebrew on the Wii Mels, and most of the Wii games out there are such shit that pirating them is almost a waste of effort. You definitely should buy the games you like, but damnit, give them a try first.

Dang, you sure are down on the Wii! Wii games are my kinda games and I find them fun. Not that I know about all the games, actually I know very little because I do not like modern gaming very much except for driving games. I find some new games to be stupid, repetitive button mashing, violent nonsense. Its all about skill and the high score for me. To each his own though. When I was a teen I really went through a violence loving degenerate phase myself. I could not get enough blood in a video game but I find that borish now. Give me a good ol game of Donkey Kong or Frogger any day!
I do wonder why the Wii is not releasing as many games as they were at first. Not that that is a particularly bad thing but I wonder if there is a problem or if that is some sort of strategy. I am thinking they are not wanting to invest in a lot of games since the economy has been in trouble. I bet they played it overly cautious and thought the gaming sector would suffer when actually its been the opposite. It seems people like to play games to keep their mind off their troubles. Its like the new age drug!!! Nintendo may have played their cards too close to the table this time!!!! They really do not need to cut any corners on game play and from the way you sound Signa they may have cut some games a bit short in development and Nintendo usually does not do that. I am just speculating out loud and off the top of my head as I type. I really have not given it that much thought until now and I am probably wrong on all accounts as I do not keep up with all the games anymore. Like I said, I am still playing Donkey Kong, Frogger, Time Pilot, Make Trax, Qix, Ms Pac Man, Tron and the like. So I have no idea what I am blabbing about! LOL I got you turds to read all that and I am talking out my ass!! HAHAHAHAHA!

Let's put it this way. The BEST game I pirated it on the Wii was Da Blob. Not a bad game, but not worth the $50 I was seeing it for. It was a nice budget title, but none of the stores I was looking at had it for a reasonable price. I still bought like 20+ games or something, but most of them were either obvious "must own" titles, or I bought them on a whim before the mods were available. Some of the "must own" titles disappointed me anyway. I don't really regret buying Mad World and The Conduit because they were targeted at an audience that hadn't been targeted on the Wii, but if they were on another system, I would not have considered buying them.

I mainly use the mod to load old games (Virtual Console games) that I already own. I just can't be bothered to have 4+ systems all hooked up, just to play old games. Plus, the games run a lot better on the wii then they did in the emulators on my xbox, imo, and I dont have to blow in the NES games to get them to load, lol.
The USB/SD game loading is nice too, cuts down on load times. I even riped the wii games I bought onto the hard drive so I wouldn't have to deal with DVD swapping and scratched discs. Its really nice actually.

Not sure if this is the right place to put this but I have a driverkey mod chip on my WII. All was fine until the end of last ear then it stopped playing backup games. Reading about it it seems that a new DVD Boot encryption was introduced. Apparently this was fixed but the existing users were waiting for a JTAG update that was to be applied through running a DVD. but the site have no real support and I cant seem to find any links to this JTAG code or how to run it. Can anyone help?
