Winmx already lets us know the bitrate of an mp3 before we download it. This gives us some idea of what quality to expect, but I would love to know what encoder was used before I decide which file to download. I would like to stick to LAME myself. Recently, I've downloaded several mp3's encoded by Xing and some of them sound like crap, especially with older versions of Xing. There would still be problems with bad rips due to people ripping scratched cd's or running other apps while they ripped, but I think this would really cut down on the files I have to delete and download again.

It would be be great if every encoder included that info in both the title as well as the ID3 tag. Unfortunately, very few do.

Here's one example I found on MX:

Jean Michel Jarre - 1984 - Zoolook (Full Album EAC HQ LAME v388).mp3

I don't think this is a good idea. It would complicate things too much.

get encspot from <http://www.guerillasoft.com> it tells you which encoder encoded every mp3 you have from some internal tag--spots phony upped bitrates too (a plague in winmx)
