I don't usually post threads but I thought i'd get some people's opinion's. What is a good, free, antivirus program? I'm sick of using bullshit by McAfee or Norton. And of course, i'm a cheap bastard.

Its ok if you're lazy and cheap, we still like you Ken17625
(actually i just pulled that out of my ass)
The point of search is, you will wait for days, and wade thru flame and snow, to get what you can find in 5 minutes with your education.
I used to go and bring back 3 or 4 threads to support a question, but now, I think, if anyones too damned lazy to even do a search, im not putting in anything extra.
Anyways, between you bookmarking the Panda and Housecalls sites, you should be in business.

Indeed I am my freind. I decided to check out the free version of AVG. Thanks for everyone's replies. Next time, maybe my lazy ass will actually search these animal houses you call fourms. J/K.

Thank you for your generous offer but i'm satisfied with the free version of AVG. It does what I need it to do.

Yep, AVG 6.0 Antivirus is the way to go! Although I haven't exactly tried the free version, I'm sure it doesn't lose that much functionality.

AVG Free version sucks. I downloaded, thought i was reasonably safe, then proceeded to downloaded alot of programs from P2P networks.
Even the files i thought were suspect, were "clean"
To the point, it let 4 viri slip by, i got hit by Nimda (Dear lord, pray you never get that) and Chernobyl (An ancient virus from the late 90's that originated in Taiwan) Since then , i use trend house call, works marvelous.

Psilaxs . . . . you try and try to tell people .. . do they listen, NO
When you guys . . .say . . rape an ftp site and mmmm . . . obtain . . .a several hundred virii and trojans, then you can benchmark antivirus software for the fun of it, and see who has better definitions. Or just view the definitions side by side. However, each one has a diferent name for some of the same virus, so, no one of them can be 100%. When it comes to lists, I guess bigger is better huh?
Or . . .just feel safe.

Please believe me, it gotta be AVG, I changed after Norton f**ked up my comp and McAfee simply did not work properly. I was very skeptical at first that AVG being free ould be any good...
...I'm not now, I love it and dont see me changing for a long time.
It is especially good for Windows XP also I think.

You have one free resident AV with up-to-date definitions, so you get right click scan ablity, like AVG, and use an online one like
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
so that you always have a second opinion? How hard can that be?
Thx TFoS_Fan, we need good word of mouth testimony here.

Personally, I think if you're going to pay for ANY software, virus protection stuff is it. Some things are too important to find a cheap alternative for.

Krell, Not sure exactly how you mean that LOL. I will clear up my end. I tried AVG over a year ago, not after reading this post.
I am not sure what your take on AVG is but i would be interested in hearing it. I dont trust it. I'm not saying it isnt any good, but to let that many viri slip by with updated def's is unacceptable to me.
BEST Regards,

I was reiterating the authenticity of your retort.
Also, in all fairness to Ken17625, when searching for the word antivuris, or anti virus, few results come up. Granted I took nearly 1,000 posts to their grave, but not everything.
In the past, when I needed to find a few results to cut-n-paste, this query was productive. Im not sure where all the antivirus fodder went, but something is awry.

Yeah, Krell, thanks for pointing me in the direction of AVG when I was looking for a alternative. Lets hope other people see how great AVG is compared to the awful McAfee and Norton (sorry any ppl who use them but they are awful in my experience)

I think the best thing about AVG is that it's so light on system resources. I got a variation of Win32.Benny and it didn't even catch it. Thank goodness I had already installed Dr. Web on my computer, which caught the little nasty on the first scan.

You know, I can't say that I like the effectivness of the search function. It is very limiting and produces unwanted results that I have to sift through(if any that are fitting). Perhaps a better search function will urge people like me(**cough** lazy bastard **cough**) to search instead of posting threads.
