Analysis: Democrats self-destructing over ethics

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration and the new Congress are quickly handing over to Republicans the same "culture of corruption" issue that Democrats used so effectively against the GOP before coming to power.

Freshman Sen. Roland Burris, D-Ill., is only the latest embarrassment.

Just as Illinois was moving past the agony and embarrassment of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich's ousting, the fellow Democrat whom Blagojevich appointed to the U.S. Senate was hearing calls for his own resignation Sunday amid allegations he lied to legislators

"The story seems to be changing day by day," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said Wednesday.

The political mess for the Democratic Party, however, isn't Burris' conduct alone; it's the pattern that has developed so quickly over the past few months.

The chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., is the subject of a House ethics investigation. It's partly focused on his fundraising practices for a college center in his name, his ownership financing of a resort property in the Dominican Republic and his financial disclosure reports.

_Federal agents raided two Pennsylvania defense contractors that were provided millions of dollars in federal funding by Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., chairman of the House Appropriations defense subcommittee.

_Blagojevich was arrested Dec. 9 on federal charges, including allegations he schemed to sell the Senate seat to the highest bidder.

_Tom Daschle, the former Senate majority leader from South Dakota, abandoned his bid to become health and human services secretary and the administration's point man on reforming health care;

and Nancy Killefer stepped down from a newly created position charged with eliminating inefficient government programs.

Both Daschle and Killefer had tax problems, and Daschle also faced potential conflicts of interest related to working with health care interests.

_Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner was confirmed after revealing he had tax troubles.

_Obama's initial choice for commerce secretary, Bill Richardson, stepped aside due to a grand jury investigation into a state contract awarded to his political donors.

Democrats are lucky on one point.

The next congressional election is nearly two years away………:icon_salu

Obama has very successfully wrapped everything he ever wanted to do into one package, label it a "Stimulus Plan" and push it through with greater ease than most of us have pushing a turd out into the bowl. You gotta give props to that shit!

If he didnt help ACORN out, there wouldnt need to be a 75 billion dollar bail out.

My neighborhood credit union and others in Texas wont take any part of the bailout. The loans and lending practices they use arent putting us in jeopardy financially or hurting the members.

Rule 1 in business. If you fail, and the company fails.. Someone faster and better will come along to pick up where you left off and take it where you wasnt able to.
Rule 2. Bailout isnt the answer, you saving the company to keep doing what got it there in the first place.. There be a BAILOUT sequel.

Same thing happened in the great depression. Government gave all this money to big businesses in hopes of hiring and employing people. Little did they realize the money wouldnt trickle down and the companies kept downsizing and held on to the money tightly.

Til companies and share holders take CEO's of large companies to court over their salary payout to the RETIRED ceo's that got millions.. Then they dont need a bailout.

Buying Freddie Mac and Fannie mae didnt solve the crisis.
Giving 700 billion to companies and banks in October because of the stock market didnt improve it or help it.

Til everything can fail, nothing can be rebuilt or restructured. Still trying to build on the foundation thats crumbling.

The truth is to put a stop on companies outsourcing american jobs to other countries. If a company wants to sell stuff or service us, they shouldnt be having Tech Support in india. China makes our shit.. And i laugh my ass off when the ships get hijacked off samalia coast. Sign into law that all companies who own sweat shops in Africa and as well as others cant have any business or export anything into America. Til they bring in the businesses that are over seas, its going to be like this.

If i have to live within my budget, companies need to do the same. Government needs to do the same.

IF my kid gets in trouble at school, he will be dealt with, not bailed out. It's because i Love my kid. I love my country and I know that dealing with the issues rather then bailing it out is no answer.

People can bash Obama all they want, but he still did more good in thirty days than Bush did in eight years.

In spite of my limited ability to observe US politics from here, I'll agree to that.

Be careful how much you support him Drew. Found this picture of him in Canada on Flikr, seems kind of cruel to be throwing a lady to the ground.

Firm with Murtha Ties Got Earmarks From Nearly 25% of House

There's a potentially big story brewing on Capitol Hill... Apparently 104 members of Congress of both parties -- 42 Republicans and 62 Democrats -- secured earmarks for a lobbying firm linked to Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) in a single bill.

The earmarks were inserted in a bill Murtha controlled as the defense appropriations subcommittee chairman.

The firm's executives and clients are among Murtha's biggest sources of campaign contributions.

"More than 100 House members secured earmarks for clients of The PMA Group, known for its ties to John P. Murtha, the congressman in charge of Pentagon appropriations... The same House members who took responsibility for PMA's earmarks in that spending bill have, since 2001, accepted a cumulative $1,815,138 in campaign contributions from PMA's political action committee and employees of the firm.

“It shows you how good they were,” said Keith Ashdown, chief investigator at the watchdog group Taxpayers for Common Sense. “The sheer coordination of that would take an army to finish.”

An added bonus: Campaign contributions received by each House member from the lobbying firm are also listed.

Nah. He has some catching up to do. This stimulus is just under 1 trillion. Bush's tax cuts have cost 3 trillion, and then add another trillion for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Oh, and then the Bush bailout for another 800 billion.

Republicans, fiscal conservationism you can count on! :icon_thum

You peeps that are agreeing with shawners quote...did you stop and actually read it? Does it make sense to you?

IF my kid gets in trouble at school, he will be dealt with, not bailed out. It's because i Love my kid. I love my country and I know that dealing with the issues rather then bailing it out is no answer.

That means that no one should.....uh, what the hell does it mean?

BTW, who was President when Wall Street got the bail out?

I can see why some banks choose not to take the Bush bail out. Its because they are use to being able to exploit loopholes so they can find a way to NOT pay the money back. The Bush administration decided to add a clause that says they can close up those loop holes if that starts to happen. Bush actually did something very good for a change, he protected our tax money some what...but some people like to bash even that since now they see it as an Obama issue. PATHETIC!

Now let me get this correct. Some of you guys are saying the government should stand by and do nothing at all? Let all the people go homeless and all the industries completely flop? I am not saying I think they are doing this thing the right way... I am not sure but I think its good that they are trying.

I am sorta surprised shawners is complaining since its highly likley his employer will not be able to pay him and many of his co-workers much longer without the stimulus money.

When more of you guys don't have a job and are close to not having a place to live you will be begging someone to do things for you to help out your family...and that situtation is rapidly closing in on everyone. While the bailout and stimulus plans will help hold off the sudden total collaspe of the country, it can not fix the years and years of missmanagment by the government, industry and the people.

How the fuck can the government please you people? Do you need your cocks sucked? I don't hear any solutions only a bunch of crying. If you know so much lets hear it or admit youre as unsure as the rest of the world.

Meh, I remember liking Bush's first 30 days too. Not all of it was things that everyone was gonna like, but they were subjectively good. I view this obama list the same.

Just give it a little longer...
