new to the forums with a quick question

hey there, i have been downloading music for as long as i can remember. how ever i just began downloading movies. my question is this:
when i download a movie normally it comes in as avi, do i need to change that to a different format to burn it? or is that the set up to burn onto a dvd already.
i tried to play the avi's on my laptop yet they do not show video, just sound.

when you say "burn it" I assume you mean that you want to play it on your standard DVD player. Yes, you have to get a AVI to DVD converter program.

Also, if the video isn't showing up, it's likely a codec issue. Download either the Combined Community Codec Pack or the K-lite codec pack. CCCP is my personal favorite because I stopped having problems with my video converter programs when I switched to it.

oh, and don't install them both, codec packs don't play nice together.

if you need to convert avis to vob's, I'd recommend convertx2dvd. also there area number of dvd brands with a DivX feature which allows you to play straight avis without any conversion. Burn five or six avis per dvd and you have about 10-12 hours of watching.

Download and install the Divx codec:

or just download VLC and never worry about codecs again.

That's definitely one of the best things you can do. Some of the Divx/Xvid player even support USB and ethernet playback so you won't even have to burn to a disc.

The best thing to do is GO TO the source. Download the DVDr, comes nicely in a ISO form after you unrar it. And you use IMGBURN To burn it.

Takes 2 hours to download on a 6meg download speed cap.
25-35 minutes to download a AVI file, but if the movie is over 2 hours, the scene will have it on two disc set, two avi's that are split up, which can take 40 minutes to download, then unrar.. And then you have to combine it using virtual dub. Then Convertx2dvd will take as long as the movie is to convert it, then 5-10 minutes to burn to a dvdr.. But what you get is NO menu, no subtitles if you need it, and usually MP3 audio. Look for AC3 audio on xvid releases. Then it could be pixalated depending on what kind of tv you have or the video quality. At least the DVDR is used with CCE encoding which is the most optimal on big screen tv's.

Thats just if your going to get in the music business. At least know what the hell your doing because re-downloading stuff because it looks like crap is lame. Its like using kazaa to get red alert for the pc. It take you forever to do, and it probably wont install right.
