two things on my compu have been bothering me.
1) my dad was ****ing around with the settings and disabled Fast User Switching. I can''t turn it on no matter how hard I try. Does anyone know the required services and registrty settings.
2) i cant use remote assistance or any App sharing feature of Windows Messenger. Does anyone know the required services and registry settings for this too. This doesn't even work when my firewalls not on.
I'm running a P3 866 Mhz PC, with 512 MB RAM and Win XP SP1. I always have 192 Mb of RAM free. I can't fix these problems even w/o any program running.

for the fast user switching, try going to start>run> type in msconfing and it should be under the services tab... just check it and restart.

Ok ryan2_2, as much as I like you, youre gonna get the " Why the hell are you running XP if you dont learn how to use it speech"
Now if phalkon were here he'd beat me to this, use this page to know what to use and not to use
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
I have thoroughly examined this, and it is in line with my personal settings and likings.
Go to Administrative Tool > and chose Services. Then make it full screen. Then, arrange them by Startup Type.
Now it will begin to make sense to you, and when you click on a Service, a description will appear on the left pane.
Im leaving it to you to do this, it will be good experience. For Remote Assistance, enable it there, and right click on My Computer, adn Remote Assistance, make sure its turned on there too.
After youve gone thru thoroughly, write down doubts or questions, then come back,
cheers
ps: keep in mind, you may need to have administrative rights as a user !

First, with the services, I already cheacked them. Hell, I even compared my settings to my friend's settings.
Second, I can't find any thing to do with Remote Assistance the System Properties. Could you please pin-point the exact spot where it is.
BTW, Krell great post and wonderboy2005, great suggestion, too bad it didn't work for me cuz Fast User Switching was already checked.

Are you XP Pro or Home? Home does NOT have Remote Assistance.
ARE YOU ADMINISTRATOR?
People, youve got to relealize, this is not W98 you are working with here. Windows 2000, and XP is all about security. That means RIGHTS, and if you are a user without rights, you are pretty screwed.
Fast User Switching
When multiple users share a computer, logging off and logging on to the computer in order to switch users can become tiresome.
Fast User Switching, a feature of Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional when it is not joined to a domain, makes it possible for you to quickly switch between users without actually logging off from the computer. Multiple users can share a computer and use it simultaneously, switching back and forth without closing the programs they are running.
For example, suppose you are working on the household budget and you have to leave the computer for a short time. Your child expresses a desire to play a game while you are away. With Fast User Switching, you can leave your financial program running and let your child log on to play the game. When you log back on, you return to the budget without losing your place.
To switch to another user, click Start, click Log Off, click Switch User, and then click the user account you would like to switch to. For more information about switching between users without logging off, click Related Topics.
Important
When Fast User Switching is turned on, Serial Keys will not work. Serial Keys is an accessibility feature that provides support so that alternative input devices, such as single switch or puff and sip devices, can be used in place of the computer's standard keyboard or mouse.
Notes:
Fast User Switching will not appear if it has not been turned on in User Accounts in Control Panel.
Fast User Switching is not available on computers that are members of a network domain.
Only users with a computer administrator account on a computer can turn on or turn off Fast User Switching.
Fast User Switching cannot be turned off while multiple users are logged on to the computer.
When Fast User Switching is not turned on, programs shut down when you log off, and the computer runs faster for the next user who logs on.

Youre absolutely right, I didnt proof my own writing, and was switching between the article on them, so I just slapped that in there. I am searching Technet to see if there are any articles on your same problem.
Yes, Remote Assistance can be used as far back as W98, but, its a pain to get it working. There are 2 or 3 patches you need also, that are directly related to Remote Assistance.

Well done Krell, glad to see ppl are actually using that link
not sure if I can add much here, but the windows update thing might help you, I do remember seeing several patches for remote assistance, if you bought xp, I would recommend doing the SP1 update, it fixed a bunch of problems (they may or may not have anything to do with your situation)
(jeez, I take a day off....and look what happens, I'm not the first responder with a possible answer :P lol)

I pin-pointed the problem. Fast User Switching and Remote Assitance both relay on Terminal Services. And the Terminal Services won't start. Does anyone know the requirements of this service?
P.S Krell thanx for site. Its alot better than the site I found about the same thing.

Hmmm . . . is your Terminal Services set to start automatically?
Check that, clear your event logs, and reboot. See if you tell where it fails on boot.
cheers

I have no idea why this showed up in the recent posts again, but I did a search of my posts a few minutes ago, perhaps that is a clue.
Anyways, while we're on the subject ryan2_2, I want to confirm that you were able to resolve your delema, if so, please post the results here,
thx.
