So here we go, best way to discover new bands is from other people. Post bands that others may not have heard of due to them being local, broken up, up and coming, etc.

The Watchmen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Watchmen)

The Watchmen were a Canadian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada) rock band. They were one of the most commercially successful Canadian alternative rock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_rock) groups of the mid to late 1990s.
The group was formed in 1988 in Winnipeg, Manitoba (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winnipeg,_Manitoba) by vocalist Daniel Greaves (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Greaves), guitarist Joey Serlin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joey_Serlin), bassist Pete Loewen (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pete_Loewen&action=edit&redlink=1) and Greaves' first cousin, drummer Sammy Kohn (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sammy_Kohn&action=edit&redlink=1). Serlin was a comic fan and named the group after the DC comic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watchmen).

Here are a few of their best songs

The Amorphous Androgynous

These Guys are seriously worth checking out

Amorphous Androgynous are psychedelic cosmic rock supergroup comprised of Gaz Cobain and Brian Dougans aka seminal electronic duo, Future Sound of London.

Here's a local band that is won a couple music festivals. Kind of generic rock, but some people might like them.

There is actually quite a good spread of good music here.

Nice! Reminds me of Pink Floyd, but somehow different. Very nice change from cookie cutter rock.

seriously awesome stuff

This stuff is so weird, I'm not sure if I like or dislike it. I'll have to listen to it for a bit I think before I really know. Reminds me of snes soundtracks, still not sure if thats a good thing.

Love the bassist and guitarists, but hate the singer, he is not in time with the song or something. This is what kills most metal core for me, the singing is almost always off, or overdone.

METAL CORE IS NOT METAL!!!!!!!! NEITHER IS NU METAL or DEATHCORE!!!

Sorry for the caps, but I feel it is necassary because these genres are killing REAL Metal. Enough said...

The Beatles (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFWlD5M9f_k)

A British band I think. I love the retro look they go for in this video.

I don't think they've had a new album recently.

They were just a rip off band of The Ruttles.

Maybe some day they will get back together but I wouldn't count on it.

hence why I said metalcore. not metal. lol

(also for the uninitiated, the core tends to imply bad singing)

One of the last favorite rock bands for me was easily Grindstone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lF6WzVfsF38&feature=related) who made an appearance on Top Gear Overdrive.

Even though I constantly listen to non-rock music, I still find this band great to listen to. :)

Pretty good, although very mainstream sound, I can see myself getting bored of it fast but probably worth listening to for about a month.

Span (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Span_%28band%29) is a good band most people probably only heard of because of the Nissan Xtera commercial. They are apparently really popular in Europe, but I've never heard them mentioned anywhere other than the song they played in the Nissan commercial.

Stay as You Are (Song that was featured in Nissan Commercial) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PSYLFB9p-8)

A band I've recently discovered and am liking very much, is Into Eternity (http://www.intoeternity.net).

Progressive metal which combines several vocal styles (death, extreme and melodic - all by the same singer and usually all in the same song).

Very interesting.

Grindstone had two albums and a host of demo songs. Mixing it in with other tunes will definitely keep the songs fresh.

The band, unfortunately, broke up and is now called Point Defiance. They brought back some of their old songs and remade them to sound heavier and more grungy. To me, the remakes don't sound as good, but some of their newer material (Union of Nothing if I remember right) was pretty decent. It's possible that with more contemporary tastes in mainstream music that others will find their newer stuff more likable.

I've heard of Span when the Nissan commercial came out. Don't do it anymore, but I looked up the car in question, punched in commercial and music into Google to find out what song it was. Good song when I originally listened to it and I kept it on an external since then. Unfortunately, don't listen to it due to vast quantities of newer songs worth listening to continually heading my way. ;)

This is a new up and coming band, but there is a twist, the band members aren't new to the music game.

Chickenfoot's line up
Drums ~ Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
Bass ~ Micheal Anthony (ex - Van Halen)
Guitar ~ Joe Satriani (Guitar God)
Vocal ~ Sammy Hagar (ex - Van Halen)

If you like you rock n roll music click here for 2 tracks (http://www.chickenfoot.us/player.html)

Much as I enjoy the drummer and guitarist, I think this could be a disaster. More like Satriani's All Star Band.

I'm really getting tired of the Hagar/Anthony formula. Just never been a big Hagar fan.

I can see the "Satriani's All Star Band" view, but to the general public still doesn't know who Mr Satriani is.

From another forum site on the topic "So, Did Coldplay Rip Off Satch?"

The other day, had the radio on in the car, and some idiot said "Coldplay stole this from Santana".
.......Sammy Hagar, a bloke with a lot of bark and no bite in he's singing.

More info http://www.noblepr.co.uk/Press_Releases/earmusic/chickenfoot.htm

That site has track listing from the album and concert dates for a tour across Europe. Lucky so and so's.

I'd reckon if you played those two songs to a person who knew nothing about Chickfoot and say "Hey come and listen to the new Van Halen song". They believe you ????
