I sometimes receive message's in a language I do not understand, they consist of thick and thin black lines, with the occasional letter. Is there away of making sense of these hieroglyphic, or should I just mind my own business.

You must load a character set into your system to see foreign characters. Until you do you will get the gibberish. Languages like Chinese, Arabic, Russian, etc have special sets you can download from Microsoft (or whoever). Or maybe certain character sets are on your Windows install disc.

What you see is unicode, and you may well install the language packs, but even if you did, and you then saw chinese or japanese characters, so what? Do you speak that language? Unless you do, its of no use to you.
Depending on your O/S, there are a few ways of going about the installation. Go to Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced, and put a check mark in "Enable install on demand"
.

these messages must be written in japanese or
corean charactor.
winmx support 2 byte charactor,so its full of
japanese or corean.
i estimate half of winmx users are them.
i am japanese, and i often meet not japanese
but also corena on WPN.
