Upset by changes to ZP...

There I was happily browsing the news when the urge to add a comment took hold of me and I took a shot. But after pressing the trigger I was kicked back by 'You need to be registered in order to post a comment on Zeropaid.com'. My msg was gone and I felt pretty empty about it all.

This change in policy has been mentioned in the past, but there wasn't even a news announcement, corresponding poll or public discussion before action was taken....wtf?!

Considering the fact around 50% of news comments came from unregistered users, this can only shrink the viewpoints expressed and make it tougher for new posters to get involved. Net result can be a diminishing group of core users debating the same viewpoints ad infinitum.

There also seems to be a disturbing change from debating broadband, copyright, filesharing etc. on the newsboard to ad hoc supportwork and fooling around in the forums.

How did this decision come about ? Is it a permanent move ?

As you noticed, non-members cannot post in stories. Why? We feel that non-members contribute to most of the negative postings that appear in the news comments section. Sure this will lower the number of comments, but I am sure that the move will bring more positive & educated comments.

In the past we have had problems with ppl posting junk and non-related issues.

I wholeheartedly agree with Jorge. 90%+ of the negative comments were coming from non-registered users and causing ZP as a whole to look bad. Making only registered users able to participate has a.) brought down the negativity substantialy, and b.) made it easy for the mods to get rid of any registered users who post nonsense or flames.

IMHO I think this was one of the best ideas to date for the news section. You have my support (if that means anything anyway :-))

I am very hesitant to mention this but after suffering at least 3 months of downhill sliding. I wonder if one or two hour banning might help.

I mean banning someone permanently is pointless. they can re-register. but a one or two hour ban would slow down the real negative or sensless talk.

I know most frequent posters will say no way. But Jorge think about this forum. It is at a point noobies cannot ask inoncent questions and I am sure many people are just not posting because of fear of bad talking back and forth.

think about it. even a 20 minute ban might help.

it will allow people to seriously chill. yeah 15 or 20 minutes might be better as it's not worth making another registration then.

peace

yeah well just because the rules have change, and people have to register in order to post in the comments section, doesnt mean that people wont register. and once they do , they still can make rude or crazy comments.
well, that is the way it is, there is always going to be people to make obscene comments.
that is why there is moderators to do there job and edit the news section etc.

o well, that is the way it is

Actually Rickio I agree with you... but the limitations of the forum software might not allow it. I am not totally sure of that though.

I think having members-only news posts are going to discourage people from joining the site. You may think the opposite would happen, but let me explain my theory.

When I just started going to the site, I would just go post on the news boards, just to get a feel for the site and the people on ZP. Eventually I started going to the site enough that I decided to join as a member.

Now, when people are going to visit ZP, they are either going to join right away, or they are going to visit once, see that everything is members-only, and say, "aah, forget it."

On a broader note, it seems that ZP is becoming more and more exclusionary. We keep drawing each other tighter and tighter in, in an attempt to control everything. That's nice and all, but I believe ZP should be more inclusionary; we should be attempting to draw newbies into the site, and making the news boards members-only is not the way to do it.

Yes but how many people are driven away by the immature flaming or bashing that mainly comes from all of the unregistered people?

Its really two sides and just like the forums i think the benefits of register only far outweighs the benefits of guest posting.

i have to say that i do not agree with you having to be registered to comment on news articles. i do however think that to use the forums you must be a member.

what annoys me most is the 190 second post gap, which seems pretty excessive! not everyone has 3 minutes per post spare!

i agree with you rickio - newbs cannot ask a normal question without getting flamed, purely for having a low number of posts.

Before you change something like this you should TEST YOUR CODE!
It says "you have to register" and now all I can do is post to this forum.
The comments ask for your name, but I AM LOGGED IN with cookies and all (yuck) so why does it not know this? Can't rate a program, WTF?????
So what gives? If I have to log in two places then you better learn to program.
You have just pissed off 1 user, how many more do you want?

Honestly I dont think your rant even deserves address, but I want you to think about this for a second, maybe two if you can handle it.

With THOUSANDS and thousands of people logging in and out of Zero Paid, do you honestly think that the problem is with the site, or your settings? I have no problem logging in, ever.

Before you go ranting about how the world centers around you, and it must be the site problem, why dont you just ask, "hey, does anyone have this problem, or is it just me?"

Evidently you caught crackerjacker on a good day, and she gave you what you need to do. Follow it, or not, but lose the caps and attitude.

Yes, everyone is way more stupid than you.
I already thought of all that before I posted, sorry Jorge but your software here has a problem.
Have you tested it with anything other than IE ?
Why not download Mozilla? No IE security problems and if more of your users used it the world would be a better place.

I tried with TWO different browsers.

Enough rant, the problem is I went to rate a ap the first time I came here "its easy and free to start a account" or something to that effect, so now all I can do with cookies on is post to this forum.

Did you make the rest of the site compatible with this forum cookie? Why don't you show the username somewhere at the top of every page so we know it has detected us so we don't waste our time trying to do something we can't?

The point is if I click right now on the "file sharing" icon at the top, and then on a category and click 'rate' on a program it tells me to create a account AGAIN!!

Now for those net gods out there that think I am stupid, read this:

I am logged in here posting using a COOKIE, then I press the icon above and that cookie should still work RIGHT???? I am not using IE, I won't use IE, I hate Microsoft products and you idiots who still use MS products deserve every virus and lost file you get because you were warned.

FRUSTRATED!!!!!!!! MAD !!!!! TICKED OFF!!!!

So fix it. Or am I suposto do something else?

Easy there champ, you're getting yourself all worked up over nothing. I use IE and I don't have this problem. I know MANY that use Mozilla and don't have this problem. I know a mod here that uses Opera and doesn't have this problem.

Stop for a moment and relax. You use Mozilla correct? That is what I gathered from your post. Now... What version is Mozilla? If it's an older one then maybe it doesn't know what to do with the cookies when you go to that page (I am really just guessing though).

I need more info if I am going to try and help you. Please, with a little less anger.. give me your browser name, version, your cookies settings, and anything you THINK may have something to do with it.

Have you thought about bashing rabbits? You know, they make horrible sounds when being eaten by predators. Seals are just no fun.

krell (as i've seen nearly the past 6 months) is a big man around here and he misunderstood my first or second post on here about this one guy talking about how people should write and spell and all this other stuff. it stunned me at first and i was gonna talk crap but i said **** it and i just let it be because although i just registered a few days ago i am no noob and i know it. i have no beef with krell...im looking to go into about the same field as he is so its no biggie. im 17 but im as experienced and smart as the rest of you guys/girls.

basically, dont flame at a guy just because of his low "post-age " b/c he may have just registered and not be a noob at all.

one thing i've learned from zp in the last year or so is that you don't go and start talkin trash to people here. many many reasons...

yah .::BeatFactory::., I have no beef with you. If I did for one nano second I cant recall. Some people just ASK for a smakin, and it's too good to pass up.

I'm not the big anything around here, or anywhere else. I just have a stake here, I invest a lot of time and effort. It's just too easy for people to come thru, muck things up, bitch and cause trouble, and not have to live with it.

If you DO come here, wont spell, or spout non-intelligble garbage, and then waaaa waaa waaa, how am I supposed to take you seriously?

Other than that, people who know JUST enough to be dangerous, want to be heard, and want a piece of the action. I am not in a competition with these people. I take it you are in school now right? When you find the time, you lock yourself away for one whole year, and do nothing but eat breath live and think Windows 2000 and XP, then see what I mean by this. Put your hands on hundreds upon hundreds of computers and thousands upon ten thousands of real world tech issues.

So I endorse your intellegence, and your maturity. While there's no way given the laws of time and physics you could be any where near as experienced, unless I was frozen in a block of ice for 20 years, I grant you the opportunity to try and participate.

Bring something of value to the table, and people will repect what you do.

cheers

.::BeatFactory::.

krell, you are one of the people here that has much, much more experience than i do. if it came across that i am as experienced as everyone here then i apologize but im not. some of you are highly advanced and when im a bit older i hope to be as smart or smarter than you are in this field. enough said...im glad to be here at zp. ill give as much advice as i can unless its been already said.
