Here's a fix for general video problems (.avi's) I have encountered from downloaded movies. The problem usually manifests as a "Class not registered" error in WMP which stops the playback.
Download NanDub (http://www.divx-digest.com/software/nandub.html) and open the .avi file, make sure that Popup Extended Options is checked. The popup will have an option to re-key the file, check that off. A dialog will appear (Rebuilding Index) and then another dialog (ReKeying). When these are both done go to the first keyframe, mark it and then the last and do a Direct Stream Copy of the whole movie.
I have saved many a 700mb "useless" movie file this way.
