From the profound to the routine, from science to silliness via cityscapes and a natural wonder, the 25 most interesting webcams of the year offer viewers slices of the world.
The list compiled by Earthcam and a group of judges includes some humans — a hair salon in Germany, a U.S. '50s-style diner in England, a woman working at her desk and several surf-and-skate boarder cams — but animals are popular, too.
There are gorillas, bees at an apiary in Millerton, Pa., and in Aberdeen, Scotland, a fish pond.
"Thanks to an underwater light next to the underwater camera, the site answers that age-old question, 'What do big goldfish do at night?'" the Earthcam note on the site says.
